Critic at Large

Show Summary

Drama critic and author John Mason Brown moderated this weekly discussion of the arts. This erudite NBC program focused mostly on Broadway and theatre, but also covered areas such as television, books, photography and changing society. The rotating collection of commentators featured people from all segments of the arts. The program ended in April 1949 as ABC cancelled a couple of its "sustaining" series (those with no sponsors) in a money-saving effort. Star John Mason Brown was reported by Billboard magazine to be making $750 a week for the program. (For the records, the other "sustainer" cancelled was American Minstrels--yes, a minstrel show!).
