In The Battle of the Line, the final battle of the Earth-Minbari War, Earth threw up everything they had, and anybody who could fly. It was a last ditch attempt to save Earth, and meant to stall the inevitable defeat of Earth so that some civilians could escape from Earth.
In the episode, it's stated that Robert Black, Brian Thompson's character, was a gropos (infantry soldier) who fought during the Battle of the Line. The Battle of the Line was a space battle fought as a last attempt to save the Earth. How exactly would a trained infantryman fight in a space battle? Garibaldi was originally an infantryman in the Babylon Five series and used a fighter a few times. However, he must have received special training as exemplified by the the shuttle flights on Mars that he captained.
Eilerson: I just do what I am told. The cooperation knows all, sees all, and tells very little. If we make a bad call, we can honestly say that we have acted in good consciences based on the information available. Absolution in abscissa. The blessed state of being able to say, "It's not my fault!"
Gideon: Granted, I'm a bit eccentric as captains go...
Dureena: Yeah, you gamble.
Gideon: Well, yeah.
Dureena: Yeah, you cheat.
Gideon: That's subjective!
Dureena: You never tell anyone the whole truth.
Gideon: And who does?
Dureena: Alright.
[Captain Gideon looking displeased with his "lab rat" status]
Dureena: To answer that, we have to figure out the difference between a rat and a starship captain, and I don't think we have that much time.
Chambers [examining contaminated garbage]: I could have been the Chief Med. on the science vessel Olympus! But no... I had to choose this mission... because it was "honorable" ... "commendable" ... "important" ... Eugh. This is how I'm helping humanity...
Durenna: Well to answer that, we'd have to figure out the difference between a rat and a starship captain. And ... I don't think we have that much time.
When Dureena goes down to the planet alone, the view of the planet through the shuttle window shows a view from space of ... Eastern Canada, however, this is supposed to be an alien planet.
This episode was meant to air after "The Memory of War", where the nanotech plague shield is introduced. But because the episode where the crew switched back to the black uniforms was never produced, it ended up being placed before the first switch in "Appearances and Other Deceits".
