The idea of an ordinary man engaging in uncharacteristic violence later explained by brain 'damage' may be a reference to (or inspired by) the case of Charles Whitman- a seemingly ordinary and mild-mannered college student who murdered his family and numerous students at the University of Texas in 1966. His autopsy revealed a brain tumor- according to his journals, his sudden violence and unusual behavior coincided with his 'headaches.'
