The CSIs discover a drug lab while investigating a shootout which resulted in several deaths. While Langston and Adams are checking out the lab, they are suddely taken hostage by a gun toting teenager who may be responsible for at least one murder.
One thing you can always count on with "CSI" is terrific acting and that certainly is the case here. However, there is not much more to say beyond that. I always enjoy seeing how the CSIs break down individual aspects of a respective case on their way to solving it. That's is sadly absent here. It's presented almost as an afterthought and this episode instead focuses on the hostage crisis. That's sad because there was nothing unique about the crisis. The same dialouge seen in similar episodes of various shows is present here so there is a lack of originality.
In this episode of CSI, the following happens. We open with a neighbourhood watch caption and a 7 year old boy being killed on a street, in the night. The father of the 7 year old boy is holding him in his arms and is still holding him the next morning when David from the ME come to collect the body. We soon learn that the two bodies are collateral damage from a robbery gone bad. Soon we learn that the real targets were the son and cousin that lived in the house which got robbed. Soon the team learn that the 2 boys were involved in making drugs. Greg informs the father of the dead 7 year old that the guy who murdered his son has been found and that he is dead. We then learn that his wife died last year and he only had his son left. Soon Riley and Langston discover blood in the lab and it's still wet. As they are about to leave a man pulls a gun on them. Greg starts to come in and Riley manages to get rid of him and also pass a message onto him that they are in trouble without the gun man realising. So Greg puts the call in, that Riley and Langston have been taken hostage. Riley tries to get something out of her case, and she actually hits the radio over and so the gunman hits her with the gun. Soon Riley manages to get her own gun and she manages to disarm the suspect. So Riley manages to save the day without anyone getting hurt.
Alright I admit it. I haven't been the biggest fan of Riley on this show but that all changed with this episode. From the beginning of the show it was clear they were going to be doing something a little bit different. The new "kids" being held hostage gave us a great opportunity to see them stand alone as opposed to always being in contrast with the characters we love. The storyline was not the central theme here but a backdrop for how essential these individual characters are to this team. Langston's compassion and Riley's calculated calmness saved their lives in the end.
This episode does carry the message that the new CSI family is finally matured. The scene in which all members walked to the crime scene (similar to one on the 1st episode in S6) just says it all. Catherine's role as the new boss and the commander has been established with no disputes. The hostage situation reveals the trusts that the team members have on each other, and how well they communicate with each other. The last scene that Ray did hesitate a little bit before putting his arms over Catherine, implies he has finally accepted himself as a member of this family.
I most say I really liked this episode.. not as usual episode, something different, something to stand out.
The way the episode started.. and as soon as we got it was practice it was sure that they will need it for this episode.. and the way it started to work.. interesting case, so much mystery, missing people.. and the house.. house that has more than one secret. When they found the lab you wonder.. wow.. that was cleverly plotted but the turn that there was hidden room inside hidden room.. even better.
So I most say I really liked this episode. The tension and hostage situation, Riley working it out.. that was very enjoyable episode.
Sometimes when a series with a run as long as CSI has, there comes a time when episodes' story lines get tried and reused, and sometimes that not the case. This is the case with this episode, which takes a different approach to a CSI story line, but a very real possiablye. When I first saw the preview for this episode, I thought that it would be like the pilot episode of CSI when a rookie CSI got killed when investigation a crime scene because she had no protection. I was happy surprise this wasn't the case for this episode. Once again Fishburne proves he can handle anything that the writers can throw at him. Also the actress that plays Riley did a good job in this episode as well, especially the parts where she interactive with Fishburne and Nick Stokes by using the hand signals to tell him what was going on down there without tipping off the person that was inside that was holding them hostage during the entire episode. I also like the fact that this episode didn't use to much violence to wrap up the episode. instead they used words and Langstorm's skills to wrapped up the episode.
This episode was a little bit of a challenge to follow for me. Based on the previews I think I was expecting a little bit more dramatic and I'm not saying Riley and Ray being held captive not, but I think the events leading up to it a little bit on the jumbled side. I did find some great intereaction from the characters within the differing situations such as Greg's interaction with Mr. Morley and then with Nick's insistence on speaking with Riley. I loved Catherine's embrace of Ray once he was safe showing that she cares but is definitely a part of something.
