    • Greg: Are you sure that you're okay with this? I mean, you can still change your mind.
Riley: No, he can't. I said that I'd kill for an office, and I meant it, even a shared one.
Greg: Wow. This is a very classy move, Nick, very classy.
      Riley: Seriously.
Nick: Aw, you're welcome. There's good energy in here, it'll be nice to share it.
Hodges (walks in, carrying a fetal pig): This belongs here. (sets it on a shelf, and walks out)

    • Catherine: Brass just closed your arson/murder. The contractor confessed. Nice work.
      Langston: Thanks.
Catherine (noticing he is looking over evidence): I thought that this one was closed too.
      Langston: It is.
Catherine: Then why are you wasting the taxpayer's money? (Ray is silent) I'm kidding. (Ray exhales, and smiles)

    • Brass (to the victim's wife): You know, it's always sad when a husband gets in the way of his wife's blossoming affair with their contractor.

    • Nick: Aw, man.
      Catherine: What?
Nick (holding out a spoonful of his cereal so she can see): Look at that. (there's a fly in it) You see that?
      Catherine: Yep. (they all laugh)
Greg: I wonder why Grissom loves this place. (they laugh again, Nick eats the spoonful of cereal)
Catherine: You didn't just do that, did you?
      Nick: What?
      Riley (laughs): Ew.
      Greg: Check please.
Langston: It's on me. ... The new guy pays, right?
      Greg: Only if he's smart.

    • Greg: I'm tellin' 'ya, every time I turn around one of these unis is givin' us the stink eye.
Nick: Come on, now. You're imagin' that.
      Greg: No, I'm not.
Riley: That's what happens when you make a lab geek the Undersheriff.
Catherine: Oh, that job is punishment enough. I actually feel sorry for Ecklie.

    • Hodges: The residue on the metal disk, is indeed what was found on the glass shards. Zea mays.
Langston: Uh, my botany's a little rusty, but I'd say... Corn?
Hodges: I call it Maize. Are you trying to impress me?
Langston: Did I? (Hodges smirks) So, we've got corn, a Mason jar, a piece of metal roof flashing, and an electrical cord. How do you make a detonator out of that?
      Hodges: I don't know.
Langston: You don't know? That's not your reputation, Mr. Hodges.

    • Catherine (printing a receipt): You sure you don't wanna give this a shot?
Langston: I prefer to watch you.
Catherine: Magnetic powder works best on porous surfaces because it doesn't smear.
Langston: I hear it's all in the wrist.
Catherine: Actually, I think it's all in the fingers, but that's me.

    • Langston (after a father slaps the back of his son's head): What? It's not our job to protect him?
Riley: His father let us in here without a warrant. And he wasn't breaking any laws. We're here to collect evidence, we're not social workers.

    • Langston: You bought my book?
      Archie: Yeah.
      Langston: Did you read it?
      Archie: Yeah.
Langston: Well, I guess that makes you one of the few.

    • Hodges (to Ray): Well, you certainly have a doctor's handwriting, next time print.

    • Nick: There is a little no-tell motel around here some where. We found a corpse under the bed, it had been there for about four days. People just went right on usin' the room, until it was too ripe to ignore.
Langston: Did you catch the guy who did it?
Nick: Yeah, yeah, we did, eventually.
Langston: Then that's a good story.

    • Nick (showing Ray how to dust for fingerprints): It's all in the wrist.

    • Nick (to Ray, about print powders): What'd you do, try to use all of 'em? In the field you really only need three powders. Black, magnetic, and dragon's blood, if you can't get a print off one of those, you're better off just taking it back to the lab.

    • Catherine: That's quite a kit you got there, Ray.
Langston: Well, it's my first official shift, I wanna be prepared.
Catherine: Your training coordinator said that you were very thorough. Add this to your check list. Whenever you're on call, have a pen and paper near your bed, along with a change of clothes, ball cap, bottled water, sun block, and make sure you got a Thomas guide inside your vehicle in case your GPS crashes. You don't want your evidence degrading as you're scrabbling to get your act together.

    • Catherine: So, Nicky, Mr. Eater-of-Flies, I want you to have Grissom's office.
Nick: I thought you were gonna use it.
      Catherine: I hate moving.
Nick: I don't know about that, it doesn't really feel right.
Catherine: Well, it may not for awhile, but make it your own.

    • Ecklie (looking around Grissom's empty office): So where'd it all go? I can't imagine Grissom being all too happy without his irradiated fetal pig.
Catherine: He asked me to send a couple things to the research station in Costa Rica, and the rest is just going into storage at his place.
Ecklie: So, he didn't sell his home?
Catherine: A condo in Vegas? That's 50 cents on the dollar at this point.
Ecklie: Hmm, tell me about it. Well, you've got a blank canvas. You're senior supervisor, it's your office now.
Catherine: Oh, I like the one I have.
Ecklie: Catherine, if you don't want it, fine, but you can't leave it empty, all right? We don't have the space for a shrine.

    • Doc Robbins (referring to a corpse): Care to do the honors?
Ray: It's been a while since I cut.
Doc Robbins: Eh, it's like destroying a bicycle.

    • Nick: You know you are not required to wear a tie unless you are in court, right?
Ray: Yes, I know. (pauses) There's something wrong about wearing a tie?
      Nick: No, no.

    • Brass: How's the first day of school going, Professor?
Ray: I'll, uh, tell you at recess.

  • Notes

    • International Episode Titles:
Czech Republic: Temná šichta (Dark Shift)

    • DVD Commentary: The new CSI, Raymond Langston, is an opportunity for the writers to re-introduce a lot of the accepted CSI techniques in much more detail, and exposition, than usual. This allows the audience to start afresh and view the CSI team through the eyes of a newbie. This is similar to when Greg became a CSI, but in much more detail as he was already one, just not a field CSI.

    • Laurence Fishburne joins the main cast as Raymond Langston and has first billing.
