Goof: In the beginning when Delko is on the phone, he has his left hand covering his ear, but when the shot changes his hand is down. When the shot changes again his hand is back up to his ear.
Horatio is 45 years old.
Goof: At the beginning as they start their investigation, Horatio and Megan go through a whole list of what people need to do in order to be safe from biohazards, including double-gloving and wearing Tyvek overalls at all times, plus no shift being longer than 20 minutes. Yet throughout the scenes that follow, nobody except Alexx wears the special stuff and they bend over and look at all the bodies with no masks or anything, even though they are decomposing and have just come from a Level 2 biohazard. And there's no way they've done all they've done in just 20 minutes.
Calleigh's nickname is the "Bullet Girl".
During the opening credits, the actors' names morph out of equations:
4y − 1 = 3b(Nh) becomes David Caruso
3a1 − x = (A9Xy) becomes Emily Procter
3b + N = 7bn1(6A) becomes Adam Rodriguez
X − T4a = (7h)3XyNh becomes Khandi Alexander
A1b + B2c = R4 becomes Kim Delaney
Goof: One scene was very flawed. They pull a man out of the swamp who they believe is still alive, but not breathing, and they sit there pounding on his chest. Not only did they not check for a pulse to determine that chest compressions were necessary, but no one was giving mouth to mouth or doing rescue breathing.
Eric: What does she think? She can waltz in here after six months of being gone and just take over?
Speed: You know ... you're an ass.
Eric: What did I say?
Speed: She lost her husband. What did they give her...two weeks off? She needed a little bit of time. Big deal.
Eric: Man, I didn't know.
Speed: Yeah, well, there's a lot you don't know.
Jim Tigerfish: What the hell is this?
Speed: That's a warrant to search the premises.
Jim Tigerfish: For what?
Speed: For items looted from an air-crash site. What'd you think, you were going to sell them on e-bay?
Horatio: ...But that's not what brought the plane down.
Eric: No... mmm... actually the shoe hit the fan, I found a piece of leather in the N°2 engine.
(Megan cuts into their conversation)
Megan: Let me guess, red suede $450 a pair, right?
Megan: Nice thing about hair, it grows at an even rate, about a half an inch a month.
Speed: Gives us a nice time line.
Megan: Yeah, she'd been using antidepressants for the past year, Prozac and Zoloft, six months ago she smoked some pot.
Speed: And they say blonds have more fun
(Alexx is going over the bodies)
Alexx: How are we doing on survivors?
Horatio: Not good. How many have you got in here?
Alexx: Four or five, depending on what pieces match.
(Calleigh look over the crash site)
Calleigh: Is it as bad as it looks?
Horatio: It's actually worse than it looks.
Horatio: Calleigh, the bullet?
Calleigh: There was no bullet.
Horatio: Well how did the pilot get shot?
Calleigh: He didn't.
(A close up of a rivet loosening appears. The pressure fires it through the cockpit where it hits the pilot.)
Horatio: A rivet runs through it.
NTSB guy: Oh I heard of you you're the uh bullet girl right?
Calleigh: And what does that make you air plane boy?

The theme song of CSI: Miami is called Won't Get Fooled Again.
It was written by Pete Townshend and is sung by The Who.
The design of the autopsy theater was based on a misremembering of a set from the movie The Andromeda Strain.
While all the fly-over shots, skylines and cityscapes really are of Miami, Florida, any beach scenes during the series were filmed at Manhattan Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles.
The Miami-Dade Police Department's crime lab really is called Crime Scene Investigations, unlike Las Vegas which is called Crime Scene Technicians & New York which is Crime Scene Unit .
This episode is based on a jet airline crash in the Everglades on May 11, 1996.
Horatio: A rivet runs through it.
Spoken as they discover the pilot wasn't shot in a conventional way. An obvious allusion to the novella A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean, published in 1976 and later made into a film directed by Robert Redford.
