A blood-soaked infant child is seen wandering around the neighborhood. Lt. Horatio Caine meets with Detective Adell Sevilla about her discovery. Paramedics found no scratches on her. They begin looking for the source of the blood.
Horatio swabs the girl's DNA and Tim Speedle determines that the blood is indeed human. He sent Speed back to the lab to deliver the baby's clothes to Megan for trace analysis. He discusses the case with Adell. The girl had a sunburn on one side of her face, indicating she was walking in a straight line during the day. A gardener told Adell the baby walked towards Hibiscus Avenue, due north.
While Horatio tracks the girl's walking trail, Megan receives the baby's clothes and begins processing. Calleigh arrives at the lab to help Megan and Speed. Megan detected soil in her feet, narrowing the baby's point of origin. Speed decides to examine the soil sample further.
Horatio spots some screaming, but it turns out to be teenage girls soaking each other with house water. Megan and Calleigh continue processing the blood samples from the baby's clothes. Horatio calls for progress on the blood work. Speed processes the soil and finds traces of Glyphosphate, a chemical associated with grass killer, indicating the baby's family may be resodding their front lawn. Calleigh and Megan update Horatio that the blood came from four different bleeders, all of them related to the baby's family. Eric spots the house being resodded from his chopper.
Once Horatio, Adell, and accompanying police officers arrive at the house, Horatio spots the baby's bloody footprints coming out of the house. The door was left wide open. Horatio waves Eric off and begin their sweep. Inside, they spot a teenage boy cradling his baby brother, both dead. On the couch is the mother who took a gunshot to the mouth. The father is alive, but barely breathing. Adell spots another member of the family in his room, playing a video game with the computer screen reading "Game Over." Horatio hears a beeping noise from the microwave. Using a nearby paper towel, he finds a bottle of baby formula.
Speeed arrives on the scene. He told Horatio that the final blood count was at five, which Horatio confirms from the two teenage boys, the baby brother, the mother, and a surviving father. The father is being carried to the hospital while the baby girl is waiting for social services to handle her.
Eric and Calleigh arrive on scene to process the house. The home owners are Jason and Stephanie Caplin. Stephanie was a stay-at-home mom. Jason is an optician at Stony Brook Mall. The decedents are Stephanie Caplin, Luke Caplin (16 years old), Timothy (9 years old), and Max (6 weeks old). The toddler found is Erin Caplin, who is 17 months old. The CSIs put on shoe covers to avoid tracking the bloodstains. No signs of forced entry was found. The family was nice and caused no trouble. Horatio determines all the evidence they need is in the house. Medical Examiner Alexx Woods places the time of death between 11AM and 1PM. Horatio thinks they were together for lunch and were surprised. All the victims (except Stephanie) were shot in the back; Mom showed signs of self-inflicted gunshot wound. Calleigh found blood spatter on the muzzle of the shotgun. The ammo was #4 buck, causing massive recoil for the shooter. Horatio decides to have all the family members tested for GSR and has everyone establish a timeline when everyone was killed.
Alexx examines Timothy's body with Horatio, found in his room face down on his keyboard. A wide spray pattern was found on his back, indicating he was shot from the doorway. He couldn't hear anything because he had his gaming headphones on at the time of his death. Timothy's liver temperature was 99 degrees, but if he died four hours ago, his original temperature with his fever was 107 degrees, meaning he was home sick.
Speed swabs blood from the floor and the wall, taking pictures of the blood patterns. Eric discovers hair on an unmade bed in the parents' room. The father's clothes were washed and pressed. An amulet was found on the baby crib's mobile, which Calleigh notes is used to ward off evil spirits. Eric spots a prescription bottle full of Paroxetine HCL, an antidepressant. It was full and filled three weeks ago.
An officer delivers a bag of evidence to Megan at the lab. Megan told the police officer she will call him as soon as she finds something.
Horatio and Eric process the kitchen. No blood or struggle was found. The sink is full of dirty dishes. The refrigerator is empty and the garbage is overflowing, indicating the family's daily diet consisted of fast food. A bag full of food is left over. Burgers and fries are found in the take-out bag, but a half-eaten french fry was found as well. The evidence suggests that the mother gave up on trying to keep a clean house and taking care of their family's children. Speed comes into the kitchen and tells them he has a starting point for the timeline.
Calleigh explains that they isolated the bleeders' on parts of the toddler, but there were large amounts of blood on the feet. Speed noted the toddler veering away from the mother around the father to the infant. The blood from Luke pooled around the toddler's feet, indicating Luke bled out when the toddler got to him.
Calleigh processes the garage. The mom drives the station wagon but it had not been used for a while. The garage door was down at the time of the massacre. Keys were left in the ignition of the car, but the dad remembered to close the garage door. Horatio finds the gun safe next to the car. Ammonia traces were found in the gun safe.
Eric notes that females do not normally commit suicide by shotgun. Stephanie was the only victim found at rest. Horatio leaves the crime scene and Alexx begins wrapping up the bodies for transportation. Blood drips on Eric from the ceiling, showing where Stephanie's blood spattered during her suicide.
Alexx examines the bodies with Horatio. Luke was shot twice in two separate places: his shoulder and skull base, indicating he was running away from the shooter. The burger bag belonged to Luke, who didn't get to eat because the killing started. Luke had an acute gastric ulcer and bit his nails, indicating that Luke suffered stress regularly. Stephanie's reach was 27" and the shotgun muzzle was 24.5", meaning that she could have definitely handled the shotgun. No GSR was detected on her hands, but not unusual for long-barrelled weapons like the shotgun. The gunshot forced the pellets directly into the medulla, killing her instantly. Horatio receives a phone call notifying him Jason Caplin is out of surgery.
Adell observes Jason recovering. Jason's doctor briefs Adell on his condition. Buckshot penetrated his kidney, but they were able to extract it. When asked about his family, Jason thought he heard a baby screaming.
Adell begins questioning Jason about the massacre. Jason claims not to know who may have done it. He saw his son lying on the floor. Jason describes in vivid detail what he experienced. Before the shooting, Jason got a phone call from Stephanie, who was struggling to take care of their family while he was away at work. Jason tried to tell her they're both tired, but Stephanie rejects the claim, telling him to come home and help.
Adell arrives at the lab and brings the clothes Jason wore. The blood was starting to smell. Horatio asks if Jason is talking, to which Adell responds he is lucid. Jason claims that his wife called him about the baby who would not stop crying. He took a U-turn to help her with the family. When he came home, Jason remembered seeing Luke covered in blood. Moments later, Jason felt a hot pain in his back. Adell notes that no one can shoot themselves in the back with a shotgun without being creative.
Eric brings the hair from the unmade bed to Megan. Megan looks at the hair, which is long and dark. Megan thought the Mom was blonde. Eric asks her if she can process the hairs on her time.
Calleigh processes the shotgun and collects blood drops from the muzzle. Speed sketches the crime scene and how everything was found. Eric brings in Megan's findings, which report that the hair found on the unmade bed was a match to Stephanie's sister.
Calleigh fumigates the baby formula bottle and the shotgun for fingerprints. She compares the two sets of prints to Stephanie's, which lack enough detail to compare them together.
Horatio and Adell interview Stephanie's sister about her. According to her sister, Stephanie always had problems dealing with the family, including how the baby kept crying. She claims the charm found on the mobile belonged to her, saying she bought it for Stephanie. When asked about the hairs found on the bed, the sister comforted her when she was overwhelmed with family problems. She explained the pills were full because Stephanie was nursing and was concerned with the side effects they may have on the infant and the toddler. The sister went on to call Jason a coward for hiding out at his office day and night, leaving Stephanie alone to care for the children. Despite having psychological issues, Stephanie loved the children and would never harm her children. Calleigh calls Horatio out for a moment.
Calleigh updates Horatio about Stephanie's fingerprint results against the shotgun. She matched the bottle to Timothy's prints, meaning he was busy parenting the baby. They try to figure out what Stephanie was up to at those moments, wondering why she did not kill Erin, but killed Max.
Eric and Speed return to the scene of the crime. Speed remembers his parents wanting him gone, but did not put him up for adoption. Eric explains his last name, "Delko", which is short for Delektorsky. His mother is Cuban and his father is Russian. He also has three older sisters.
The CSIs try to figure out why Erin was spared, but not the other children. Eric and Speed meet up at the backyard and found a doghouse. They don't remember seeing a dog, but deduced that Erin was hiding there at the time of the shooting. They also find a bloody blanket that Erin was wrapped in.
Horatio and Calleigh reconstruct Stephanie's suicide using a plastic box to capture the exact blood spatter pattern using her position on the couch. They place the dummy on the couch and prepare the murder weapon. Horatio fires into the dummy's neck and successfully recreate the ceiling spatter and Stephanie's head. They determine she was either too relaxed to suicide in this manner or she was napping when she died.
Eric determines that the blood on the blanket proves that she was in the doghouse after the shooting occurred. The blanket blood belonged to Stephanie. No traces of soil was found in the doghouse, indicating that someone had carried her out after Stephanie was killed. The path from the doghouse to the nearest doorway into the house was 11'4", so the CSIs begin processing the family's shoes for traces of soil and glyphosphate.
Investigation into the shoes determine that Luke and Jason both had traces of soil and glyphosphate. This points to either person carrying out Erin to the doghouse after Stephanie died. The case shifts from murder-suicide to a murder. Luke's ulcer showed stress. Considering he was taking care of the family, Horatio theorizes that Luke got sick and tired of their situation and murdered everyone.
Speed processes Luke's pants and finds blood transfer. The blood matches Stephanie's, indicating that Luke reached out for Erin after his mom was mortally wounded. Instinctively, he hid Erin from the killer in the house.
The team review the evidence: Luke bought lunch for everyone, but sees his mother dead on the couch and finds Erin with her mother and Max swinging on a toy in the living room. While Luke hides Erin, the killer shoots Timothy. Luke comes back to save Max and goes out the front door, but was killed. Jason is on the floor with a gunshot to the back. Horatio reexamines the blood on Max's clothes. All of the family members showed spatter on the shirt, but finds only gravitational drops on the shoulder from Jason, meaning he was standing over Luke and Max when they died.
Horatio and Adell confront Jason at his home with the evidence. Jason tells them staples are holding his chest together.
Crime Scene Reconstruction, Part 1: Jason handled the shotgun. When Stephanie went to sleep on the couch, Jason positioned the shotgun to make Stephanie's murder look like an accident. While he goes into Timothy's room, Luke arrives home with lunch, but finds his mom bleeding out on the couch with Erin prodding her dead body. As Luke carries Erin outside into the doghouse, Jason shoots and kills Timothy from his doorway. After hiding Erin, Luke spots his father, Jason, walking down the hallway with the shotgun from Tim's room. Seeing Jason walk towards Max, Luke bolts into the house and wrestles with Jason. Luke wrestles the gun away from Jason, but Jason stands in front of Max, thinking Luke will not endanger Max. Luke shoots away from Max, but inflicts a gunshot wound to Jason's lower-left back. While Jason is down, Luke picks up Max and tries to leave through the front door. Jason picks up the shotgun and shoots Luke twice, killing him and Max in the process.
After being arrested, Jason confesses to the killings, claiming he never slept. At work, he can hear his family's screams. He tried, but did not have the strength to persevere and decided to end their lives instead. As the police car carries him away, Horatio and Adell realize he's setting himself up to take an insanity plea.
Horatio processes Jason's sleeves on his shirt and finds ammonia. Calleigh joins him to reprocess the gun safe and find traces of ammonia. He called his wife from his car and think he called her to close the gun safe.
Crime Scene Reconstruction, Part 0: Prior to Part 1, Jason opened the gun safe and applied ammonia to the door to wipe off his traces. He left for work that morning. Some time before 11:45am, Jason called Stephanie to check the gun safe and asked her to close it if it was still open. Stephanie closes the safe, leaving her prints everywhere. At 11:45am, Jason returns home, drives into the garage, closes the door, and uses latex gloves to open the safe and grab the shotgun. Part 1 of the Crime Scene Reconstruction begins.
Speed explains to Horatio they cannot prove that he called his wife to close the safe. Horatio acknowledges, but replies that any plan proves premeditation, meaning that Jason knew what he was doing.
The next day, Speed hands Horatio a newspaper with the mass murder on the front page. Jason is pleading insanity, co-opting Stephanie's post-partum depression. Speed hopes a jury will not buy his insanity plea. Horatio is rest assured that at least Erin knows what really happened that day.
