In the opening sequence of this CSI:Miami episode, someone's shot, someone jumps, and Ryan gets beat up.
As Eric and Calleigh get ready for work in one shot, Ryan is tortured in another. They tell him to do as they ask or Mark will get hurt. Mark Gantry is Ryan's friend, the horse doctor, who refused to dust one of the horses at the track though it would have paid off his debts to Sarnoff. Now Sarnoff is looking for him.
Exchange broker Ian Warner is shot in his office and the security guard turns off building exits. However, all the CSIs think the killer went upstairs. Ryan shows up to the scene before the other CSI's which means he's been released from his torturing captor. They question Cynthia Lang, the assistant of the victim. The CSIs search the premise for evidence and Ryan keeps a shell casing to himself.
Eric and Wolfe discuss the whereabouts of the jumper who took all the cash from the office strong box. They pinpoint that he must have landed and Eric discovers at the scene a piece of the chute. DNA evidence identifies Jim Colton as the culprit.
Colton defends himself, saying that he packs chutes all the time, and there is no residue of gunpowder on his hands. Eric is angered that Ryan lets the guy go.
In the lab, Ryan takes a piece of the shirt he was beaten in and places it under the microscope. He finds sugar, but the many sugar refineries in South Florida could have been the reason. Mark Gantry calls Ryan to say he can't find Billy. Ryan wards him not to go looking because Billy will be killed if he does. Ryan needs to make the murder disappear before they will release Billy.
Ryan pulls up a print from the security guard and secretly transfers it to one of the items from the safe before Calleigh and Eric examine it. Eric finds a print match to the security guard that Ryan just framed. Horatio enters and questions Ben the security guard. Gunshot residue is found on his hands as well as a 9 mm gun, which matches the round at the crime scene. He is arrested for murder.
Meanwhile, the roof-jumper is let go since they do not have substantial evidence to continue containing him. Mark Gantry demands information as he walks into the office and Horatio asks why he is still in town. He explains that Ryan took on his debt and that he could not live with himself. He tells Horatio that Ryan knows of Billy's kidnapping but refuses to release any information.
Horatio confronts Ryan and asks why there's a video of Billy on his phone. He explains how the Russians will murder the boy if Ryan doesn't help him in the Ian Warner investigation. After the boy is found, he agrees to face every necessary review board.
Calleigh examines the Security Guard's jacket and uncovers a gun that was never fired. She questions the evidence and becomes suspicious when Ryan picks up evidence without gloves. They tell Ben that they they know the gunshot residue was transferred and that he is no longer the culprit. The only person in contact with him was Cynthia Lang, who they had originally questioned. While the office was being robbed, she was seducing him in an elevator.
Horatio gets access to security footage from Billy's school and partially sees a license plate on a van in the security tapes. The plate is registered to a sugar company. He arrives at the sugar company and sees Jim Colten digging a grave. It's not really a grave, but a stash for the money until the situation simmers down. They force him to tell them the location of the boy. Colton goes with them to the location.
Ryan gets a call saying it's too late; he broke the deal. The Russian points the gun at the boy and Horatio runs in the nick of time to kill the Russian. Ryan is relieved but shocked all at the same time.
Calleigh and Eric examine the bag of money and find the gun. Ryan gives them the shell casing he was hiding. Cynthia Lang's fingerprints are on the shell casing, and she admits to murdering him because he disrespected people. Mark and Billy are reunited.
