Season 3 Episode 24

Snow Day

Aired Friday 9:00 PM May 16, 2007 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • It is very unrealistic that Stella lifted a unique fingerprint from an elevator button.

    • Despite extolling the virtues of 'safeguarding your prisoner' in the previous episode - and indeed using someone else's mistake in this regard to his own advantage - Mac fails to heed his own advice when strapping one of the gang members to a homemade bomb. Given that this bomb was tripped at the end of the episode, presumably this unarmed prisoner was also killed in the blast.

This is true, but in this case we can assume he was more concerned about his own safety than the prisoner's one. When they take care of the prisoner's safety in jail, they already ensure the others' by locking up the prisoner. Here it is very extreme but maybe it seemed to him the only way (even if probably not the right one) to ensure that this prisoner would no longer be dangerous for them (without the need to permanently keep an eye on him), so that they could chase the others guys.

    • Goof: When Flack and Hawkes go into the CSI building and tell the criminals to "put the bags down", Hawkes mouth is not moving correctly to match the dialogue.

    • Goof: When Danny & Lindsay are on the pool table, he uses his left hand to stroke her hair, but when the camera goes back to Lindsay, he's using his right.

    • Goof: In the pool table scene, Danny's dog tags keep moving.

    • The guys who took over the lab are the same ones who killed the FBI agent in 3x10 Sweet Sixteen.

    • Goof: The exterior of Danny's building seems to be the same one as that of the office of the girl who wanted to die like Juliet in 3x20 What Schemes May come.

    • Goof: The exterior of Danny's apartment is different than the one shown in 3x18 Sleight out of hand. They are actually two different buildings. The apartment in this episode is also bigger.

    • Despite all the pressure they're under, and the very simple instruction 'Find The Bullet', Hawkes uses a computer imager. In the end all it shows is where the bullet hole is and that's where the bullet's found. It would have been way quicker to just rip open the shirt and dig, like he does in the end.

    • Mac has only taken 5 1/2 days of vacation since becoming a member of the NYPD and he's collected 7 weeks worth of vacation.

    • Goof: A common mistake on television and in movies is the fire sprinklers. Fire sprinklers work by heat breaking a glass bulb, the bulb causing the water to exit the sprinkler. Setting off one sprinkler does not cause all of the sprinklers in a building to go off.

    • Interesting Fact: It is possible for an open flame to be present even when natural gas is in the air. First, gas is lighter than air, so it is possible for a standing person to smell the odor or a wall- or ceiling-mounted monitor to detect its presence if the flame is on a lower surface such as a lab table or a stove burner; second, gas is only explosive within certain limits: if it is less than 5% of the air in a room, there is not enough gas to ignite and if it is more than 15% of the air, it has displaced too much oxygen to support combustion.

    • Twice the hostage takers use the word "guinea" when referring to Danny. The term "guinea" is a racial slur towards people of Italian descent and is used in a derogatory manner.

    • Danny is a Giants fan.

    • Danny's note to Lindsay when he failed to wake her up for shift: MONTANA, DON'T FREAK OUT. ALTHOUGH I'M SURE YOU ALREADY HAVE. WE'RE TRADING SHIFTS. I GOT YOU COVERED. ENJOY YOUR SNOW DAY. D

    • Interesting Fact: A moment after the alarm sounds, Peyton asks Mac if it's sulfur they are smelling. Mac attributes the odd smell to a gas leak. Noticing that an open flame does not react to the supposed gas in the air, he takes an air sample and realizes they are smelling Mercaptoethanol. "That's the same smell as the chemical compound they add to odorless natural gas to identify a leak.", he explains to Stella.

Mercaptoethanol is among one of the strongest odors known - most people can smell less than three parts per billion - and is chemically related (and similar in odor) to skunk spray.

This and similar compounds do contain sulfur, but have an odor distinct from that of sulfur vapors.

  • Quotes

    • Lindsay: I'm sorry.
Danny: What? What are you sorry about?
Lindsay: You were not supposed to be here. You took my shift.

    • Peyton: Have you seen Mac?
Sid: No, have you checked the other side of the building?
      Peyton: Yeah, I have. Twice.
Sid: Well, I imagine he's looking for you, you're looking for him, and you're both circling the building... stay put and he'll find you.

    • Flack: Let's do this. (holding gun in his hand)

    • Gunman: That's a cute toy you got there.
Flack: Why don't you come out here and I'll show you how to use it.

    • Danny: There's no way you're gonna make this shot Montana.
Lindsay: A Benjamin says I do. (She makes the shot) You owe me $100.
Danny: You know what... you're gonna have to wait till pay day.
Lindsay: No. You either pay me now, or come up with something better.

    • Danny: (to hostage takers) You two humps from Clinton just hijacked a crime scene cleanup. Makes me believe that when they went to gentrify Hells Kitchen they got rid of all the smart guys.

    • (After inviting Mac to go with her on a trip...)
Peyton: But Mac, I was thinking with everything you've been going through and because you adore me, and you do adore me, that you could take some of the seven weeks of vacation and come with me to London.
      Mac: You've bought the ticket?
Peyton: (Whispering) I really want you to say yes.

    • (After Danny pokes her in the nose to wake her up...)
Lindsay: I dreamt that I woke up and you were gone. You left a note.
Danny: Where would I go? This is my place.
Lindsay: (Giggling) I was hoping for a better answer.
Danny: Just kidding. I'm glad that this happened.
      (Danny kisses her forehead)
      Lindsay: Me too.

    • Adam: Danny look out!

    • Flack: Danny, how are you doin'?
      Danny: I'm good.
Flack: Well, you dont look good. Let's get the EMS over here.

    • Mac: (To Criminal) I will make it my personal mission to hunt down who you protect.

    • Stella: What are we gonna do?
      Mac: Stop 'em.

    • Stella: Hey Mac, where're you going?
      Mac: London.

    • Stella: Wish I had called in sick today.

    • Mac: It's simple. If you find someway to get out of that tape, or someone tries to save you, they trip these lasers which set off the pipe bomb rigged to that Hydrogen tank over there. That's enough explosive to kill you, and make the cleaning crew very unhappy.

    • Mac: It's only been what, 24 hours since you murdered your boss? Congratulations on the shortest reign in criminal history!

    • Stella: I don't think he wants to answer us, Mac.
Mac: That's alright, I'll let his dead friend answer us.

    • Gunman: You like pain, dontcha?
Danny: I was-I was just goin' out to get some air.

    • Mac: Gavin Wilder lost his drugs, his crew and his life all in one day.

    • Hawkes: Hey, he was gonna kill you. You did what you had to.
Flack: Just not how I wanted to start my day.

  • Allusions

    • Danny: (to hostage takers) You two humps from Clinton just hijacked a crime scene cleanup. Makes me believe that when they went to gentrify Hell's Kitchen they got rid of all the smart guys.

Although, some may confuse the reference w/ the tv show Hell's Kitchen, a show on FOX, both Danny's statement and the FOX show reference a neighborhood in Manhattan known as Hell's Kitchen - near Midtown. It used to be a crime-ridden area. Over recent years, it has become gentrified the neighborhood and the rich folks have moved in - meaning the "smart guys" or criminal element is no longer there.

    • The entire episode appears to be an homage to the classic Bruce Willis 1988 action film, Die Hard. It features such set pieces as unlikely people thrust into unexpected heroic roles; the use of a diversion to cover the real crime; the takeover of an office building; the major crime being the breaking into a vault; and even the sending of a dead criminal back in an elevator with a written message scrawled on the body.

    • Episode title: Snow Day.

Cocaine is often referred to as "snow". Since the mob is after the cocaine the title could be referring to their siege on the lab.

The title could also allude to Lindsay's unexpected day off. In states where snow is common in the winter, schools sometimes have a snow day. When there is too much snow for students to safely go to school, school is canceled and children get a day off.

    • One of the drug lords calls Flack "Serpico" while they're talking over the radio.

Serpico is the Al Pacino movie based on the true story of a New York police officer who fights back against corruption in the department.
