  • Tanglewood is a brilliant installment in a wonderful series. (Do i say brilliant too much? Oh well.) Excellent :D

This episode was absolutely amazing. It was not only a fine example but a series classic! :D I loved the character development in this episode not only from Danny, but all the rest as well. I definitely have to say I felt sorry for Aiden when she was on the two cases at the same time, even though Danny’s comment on that was hilarious and priceless. “Crouching Aiden, Hidden Burn,” indeed. I loved the forensics, most notably the sulfur and the footprints. I also loved Hawkes scene with his tattoo rising. And how he gets the tattoo that was basically ripped off and burns it to get the tattoo too rise. He washes it off and he finds it. There are three cases in the beginning, but as we go we find out that one case is tied into the first. The murdered shop clerk is connected to the dead Tanglewood Boy wannabe. And the climactic ending showing exactly what happened was a fantastic view. The second case was rather interesting in itself, but of course it was overshadowed by the Tanglewood Boys. It was rather cool to see them working with the cars and also funny to see the massage parlor that was said to be a “hair dressers” or so the wife said to the husband. The poor guy didn’t realize what his wife really did. I’d say what did he expect with a girl who is such a nympho as he put it? But that’s very unfair as not all girls with a healthy appetite for sex work in jobs such as that. That is a horrible misconception. In the end it was someone that had no connection whatsoever with her. The mistress was really jealous for no reason; it was just a massage parlor. Also, she was a mistress. Sadly the entire second case was not as developed as the first case, but I believe the first case’s depth made up entirely for that. It was sad that Danny and Aiden’s case was not as interesting; at least we got extra bits of Danny because Danny was asked for help in the Tanglewood mystery.

I loved how Danny seemed so upset by the entire Tanglewood Boy situation. He was generally upset about it, but of course we never get to know why until later. Danny’s connection is hinted at by Mac, but then at the end Sonny, the lead Tanglewood Boy basically tells Mac he doesn’t know everything about his Danny Boy (Danny isn’t the only one who can make cute puns). And poor Danny closing out the episode with what seemed tears in his eyes. He was so upset!

I loved the considerate and sympathetic sides of both Stella and Mac. How both tried to console the mother in different ways. Stella took the picture of the son on the side so that she couldn’t see the beating on the one side of his face. And Mac tried to console the wife.

I loved how Mac was just FED up with Sonny, the lead Tanglewood Boy. He was absolutely genius, especially when he calls him a punk. The only downside to this episode is that these Tanglewood Boys are supposed to be like 20 something, but they all look like 30. But an up side? Flack beating up a punk kid. Well not beating him up, but also smacking him. I also loved the kid doing the dance to Snoop Dog on the ice and snow.
  • Introducing Sonny Sassone and a person with a very big secret.

Okay the introduction of the Tanglewood Gang means trouble for Danny and work for Mac. Sonny is "A" typical mobster. Willing to do whatever's necessary, to whomever gets in the way of what he wants. I like the show of compassion to Paul's mother from Mac. The case of the homemaker turned massuse was really interesting. Talk about keeping secrets. I think the twist of the abusive husband having nothing to do with her death was different. It turned out to be a rival that she wasn't even aware of, who ran her off the road causing her death.
  • I liked this episode very much because it was with the tanglewood boys, they are the new mob and i loved it!

  • Pivotal not only in Dannys character development but also in the series as a whole and the development of the cast as an ensemble.

My musings on Tanglewood.. o.k. this is such a great episode. Not just because it is Dannycentric but because the whole thing is so well written and constructed. A and B case are both great and after my rant about how appalling Cold Reveal was I would just like Mr AZ to know this is the kind of thing he should be aiming for. Watching this epsiode made me think that S3 was actually a bit lacklustre compared to 1 and 2, lets hope it is the equivalent of the difficult third album and they get back on track with the next season.

I have seen this episode lots of times and it never fails to pull me in and keep me hooked. I always jump when the guy dives through the window, I always ugh when Hawkes lifts the tattoo, I always get a deep sense of foreboding when Mac is talking to Danny about Tanglewood and my heart always breaks a bit at the end when we see Danny take off his glasses and look so despondent. He knows that this is gonna come back and get him at some point.

I wonder on re watching this how much Mac knows about Dannys past, he knows he is from Tanglewood and I guess he guesses he hung with these "kids" when he was younger but I wonder if Louie came up as a known associate when they were looking up Sonny Sassone. It is interesting that at this point Hawkes and the rest of the team do not seem to know Danny that well as they don't automatically connect Danny with Tanglewood like Mac does. It also makes me wonder how they are gonna reintroduce the whole Louie/Tanglewood thing in S4 as the Carmine interview suggest. I personally can't wait as this storyline is one of my favourites, not least because it give Carmine a chance to show what a great actor he is. On a shallower note I love the "look" Danny has in this episode, I remember the first time I watched it and saw Danny walk around the crashed car in that great coat, his hair is slightly longer, he is a bit more suited and booted than in later seasons and he looks great. I like in the audio commentary on the DVD that AZ says they wanted to make him look especially "pimped up" in this episode and they succeeded. (BTW if you haven't listened to this episode with the commentary you really should it is fascinating. I wish they would do them for a few more episodes *cough* Snow Day or NWILL *cough* Mr AZ, are you listening? I know I really have to stop talking to the man as if he was here!)

Sonny Sassone is a complete *"£^£*! (insert your own expletive) in this episode, he really winds me up which I guess is the point of the character. I just want to shout grow up at him. I mean what is he late 30's early 40's. Guy is mad as.

Last but by no means least one of may all time favourite scenes is the one where Danny "edges" into Mac's office (always makes me smile) and they have the chat about belonging. Everytime I watch it I come out with something different. Does Danny want to fill Mac in on his real connection with Tanglewood but can't find the words? Does Mac stop him because he doesn't want to know how deeply Danny may have been involved? Is Danny just testing the waters to see whether Louie has come up in the investigation? Is Danny looking for Macs reassurance that he is in fact one of the good guys? Danny has that little boy lost look that we see when he is in some trouble that he doesn't know how to get out of and I can't work out why Mac doesn't pick up on it or whether he mis reads it or just chooses not to go there. Either way it is a great scene between Carmine and Gary and really the exemplifies the close but sometimes uneasy relationship that they have. I would love it if in some future episode we could cover the Mac Danny dynamic some more. Carmine and Gary play off each other really well (out side the hospital in RSRD anyone?) and I think it would be good to perhaps shake up their relationship, will be interesting to see what will happen in S4 if as Carmine suggests we get a bit more of volatile Danny back or if they decide to use the injuries Danny gets from Snow Day as a plot device.

I could go on forever about this one but will stop for now. All in all a great episode as I knew it would be :D, pivotal not only in Danny character development but also in the series as a whole and the development of the cast as an ensemble. Spot on writing and acting from all concerned and as I have said before - more of the same please Mr AZ. Top-notch!
  • One of my favourites from first season!

    8.8
    "Great"
    * I love Mac and Stella processing the snowy crime scenne. All the cooking stuf was really funny and their chemistry is awesome in this chapter ( I'm not a Smacked shipper but...)

    * Mac asking Danny for help was quite surprising. And He knows all the answers!! I love when Danny acts so italian: the gestures, the accent...I like that we finally know something of Danny's past!

    * The scenne with Aiden and Danny at the massage house make me laugh!! "I had girlfriends, why would I pay for?" Yeah!!! He is so cheeky!!jajjajjaj. That case was interesting. I think they have wasted a great story to dedicate more screen time.

    * I liked the tanglewood boys dancing on the snow!! And Sony Sassone threatening Mac with Danny! that guy has big bowls!!

In conclusion, I like the episode. It's one of my favourites from season 1
  • New York lives up to what ....

    8.8

New York is New York. Center for fashion and business combined. My review is not about the storyline but how each actor carries their clothes - so fashionable; Chic Stella with cool Don looks like they are walking in a runway while processing crime scene and they are good while freely bantering with each other and same with Danny. So if you are into trend for business attire, watch every single episode.

Man chases and beats to death another. Believed to have used a baseball bat. Sammy is one of the "tanglewood" boys, but he was faking a tattoo. He was never ACTUALLY involved with the tanglewood boys. Boys promised to let him in if he robbed man and hit guy in head with a baseball bat then sands the "tanglewood" tattoo off and kills him with the bat. Hit and run. Victims red car had a silver chip. Man had an affair with secretary. Secretary meant to scare the woman but on an accident she skid her off the highway.
  • Tanglewood is the very first episode in CSI:NY that delivers what it was promised to do: Have more character development than the pervious two CSI had.

    9.1

Tanglewood is the very first episode in CSI:NY that delivers what it was promised to do: Have more character development than the pervious two CSI had.

And the first character to have some good character to be developed is Danny Messer . While any type of character development is good, because it let you find out something about them, the type of character development that Danny gets in this episode isn’t the good type. Because in this one it hinted that Danny had some type of gang connection and to have something like that if your past isn’t good, no matter how look at it.

While this isn’t good for Danny with his relationship with his co-workers, its good for the fans because it shows that Danny might be the one of the most complex characters in the entire CSI franchise. This will be good for the fans of the show because the fans of the show would like to know what made him the person that he has become.
