"Poor"
I was really disappointed with "Vacation Getaway." The first 3/4 of the episode was actually pretty good, but the ending was just full of stupidity. Ok, so Shane Casey - who went to some great lengths to escape from jail - starts sending the CSIs clues about one or more crimes he has or will commit. At that same time, Danny and Lindsay are taking Lucy out on their first getaway to a beach and lighthouse. Danny knows something's up, but the CSIs tell him they've got it under control. As the clues add up, the CSIs realize that Shane is going after Danny. One of Shane's clues is a dollar bill with a picture of a lighthouse on the back, so the CSIs are trying to figure out which lighthouse it is. At that same time Lindsay is taking a picture at the lighthouse her family is visiting and uploads the picture somewhere. The CSIs see her phone come on, giving them her exact location, and they realize that not only is she at a light house, but she's at a lighthouse which has features matching all of the other clues on the dollar bill. Mac orders them to call out the local police and get a helicopter, but - and this was the first great stupidity - **no one tried to call Lindsay** and warn her that they were in danger. Think about that again for a sec - they see that her cell phone is on, they know she's in danger, they know the killer is headed for the exact location she's at, but no one tries to call her to warn her. Granted, the episode would have been shorter, as Shane would have lost his element of surprise, but still... couldn't they have **tried**? It's also a bit stupid that, since Danny and Lindsay knew *before* they left that Shane was communicating with the cops again, neither of them had their phone on. I'm all for understanding that they'd want to avoid any unnecessary interruptions, but you'd think they'd want to at least leave a line of communication open if there's even a small risk that a guy you know is after you is active again. I could have forgiven a plot point such as the CSIs DO try to get a hold of Lindsay and Danny, but inside the lighthouse, for some reason, they aren't able to get cellular signals. That would have given us the same tension without making Danny and Lindsay too stupid to take even a simple precaution or the CSIs too stupid to call and warn their friends.
Then we get to the confrontation with Shane. As noted above, he went to some lengths to break out of jail, and has made it pretty clear he's after Danny. Why does he hate Danny so much? Why is getting Danny so important that he'd make the kind of effort to get him that he did? He tells us that it's because he had originally thought his brother was wrongly convicted, so he felt good about going after the people he thought had been involved in wrongly convicting him, and Danny had the temerity to point out that his brother actually was guilty. Whaaaaa? That's it? Shane says his brother killed himself because he couldn't live with what he'd done, but Shane himself was ok with the lives he'd taken. So if he's so ok with it, why does he need to get revenge on Danny? It's just one of the most ridiculous motivations I've ever heard of on a cop show - he told me the truth so he must die? Ooookaaay then....
Then the ending. Shane and Danny battle at the top of the lighthouse, and Shane falls into the ocean below. Now, given that there right at the shore, the water in that area isn't going to be terribly deep, and there are a lot of rocks right below the lighthouse. Plus, it's a pretty long fall. So, Lindsay, Danny and Lucy get home, everyone's all tucked into bed, and Danny hears Lucy cry. He goes into the room, and sees Shane - who we presumed 2 minutes previously was dead - holding Lucy - and **still wet from the fall.** I'm sorry, but the distance that he fell and kind of surface he had to fall only would have at the VERY least left him with some kind of injuries - and they'd've been the type that would make it pretty hard to sneak in the window of an apartment! Again, if they'd just popped in a chryon saying something like "2 weeks later" - given him some time to dry off and heal up before sneaking in a window, that wouldn't have felt nearly as idiotic - and it would have been an even greater shock for everyone because they would have had plenty of time for their adrenaline to mellow out and fall into that nice false sense of security. In the episode, we also saw Lindsay wake up fairly quickly after Danny got out of bed and found Shane. The screen cut to black followed by a gunshot, but because we know that the first attack had obviously been just a few hours earlier that day, it's not hard to guess that Lindsay, upon seeing Danny gone from his side of the bed, likely got up, got her gun, and came to their rescue, and it was her gun going off that we heard at the end. Obviously, I don't know that for sure, but it strikes me as the most likely scenario. If they'd had this final appearance of Shane set a couple weeks later, Lindsay most likely wouldn't have been as suspicious when she saw Danny was up - babies DO wake up and need attention in the middle of the night, you know - so it would be more likely that it wouldn't occur to her that they were in danger. But because the fight had been so recent - that very day - all of her defence systems are likely on full alert and she's going to pick up that something's really off.
Anyway, that's my take on it. Like I said the first 3/4 were *great*! Good acting, nice tension build, interesting puzzles and cute scenes at the beach. But that last part just **killed** the whole episode for me - and it would only have taken a couple minor changes to make it work so much better. Well, fixing the stupidity of the motive would have taken more work, but I'll bet if it hadn't been for the phone call issue and the weakness of the ending, I could have overlooked the bad motive a lot more easily.
