I found this a much better episode than the last one. And while I can see where the ground work in the previous episode was used in this one, I can't help but think that his one would have made a much better season premiere. The deaths were creepy and clever, the bad guy's crazy was understandable and I liked how people are starting to pick up that there's something wrong with Mac.
  • Leonard Brooks has moved from arson to murder. Mac and the team try to guess his next move to prevent further deaths.

My thoughts on "Where There's Smoke..." are mixed. I liked seeing Leonard's back story, but on the other hand it felt a little cliched. We see where his pyromania comes from. It did come across as formulaic that the cause was an abusive parent. The fact that he was exacting revenge on the family members for abusing or not helping him was formulaic as well. There are some positive points about this episode however. One is Rob Morrow. As with the previosu episode he does well here. Gary Sinise and company always deliver a strong performance consistently. I did like this episode, but that's it. I liked it.
  • Interesting to find out about Leonard...

It was interesting to find out why Leonard was the way he was. And in some ways he is kidn, get a monster. He had no problems killing those he felt had betrayed him or his mother that had hurt him, yet he had gone back years earlier to save an innocent woman. I like his charachter; it makes him interesting that he's not pure evil and not pure innocent.

Also, Mac should tell the team about his speaking problem. They could help him with words when he can't figure out how to say it or what to call something, eventhough he knows what it is.

I like the new detective. She tough and seems to have a great sense of humor. I sense that maybe the reason she left narcotics and the reason her cover was blown will become much more clear later in the season.

So, good job CSI NY writers and actors! This was a very good episode!
