Cyborg 009

Show Summary

Cyborg 009 is the story of a half-Japanese juvenile delinquent named Joe Shimamura, or Cyborg 009. Black Ghost, a top-secret organization bent on promoting global warfare, kidnaps Joe along with eight other unwanted members of society from the four corners of the globe and turns them into Cyborgs. Though the organization intends to turn the group into super-powered killing machines, it's not long before Joe and his new companions rebel against Black Ghost and make their escape with the help of an old scientist, Dr. Isaac Gilmore.

Once Joe and friends have freed themselves, Black Ghost sends a series of other Cyborgs and giant robots in hot pursuit. Using their new powers and abilities, our heroes stay one step ahead of Black Ghost and its evil machinations, but can they save the world from its diabolical scheme?!

Cyborg 009 was the creation of manga-ka (Japanese comic artist) Shotaro Ishinomori. In 1971, Ishinomori-sensei reworked the Cyborg 009 concept into his more popular creation, Masked Rider, or Kamen Rider, which told the story of a young scientist/motorcyclist named Takeshi Hongo who fights the evil organization Shocker, which transformed him into a grasshopper-like Cyborg for their evil deeds

This is the third Cyborg 009 anime series made. The first was made in 1966, and the second in 1979, the latter almost identical to the newer series made in 2001. There were also two animated films in 1966 and 1967, Cyborg 009 and Cyborg 009: Monster War, and another for the '79 series in 1980 titled Cyborg 009: Legend of the Super Galaxy .

This guide covers the English dub version ONLY. In Japan, in 2001, it was named Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier, or Cyborg Soldier 009, to avoid confusion with the two previous series. In it's US run in 2003 on Cartoon Network, the anime was simply titled Cyborg 009. Go here for the Japanese version guide.
