    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (5)

      • Revealing Mistake - All screws tighten if you turn them clockwise and loosen if you turn them anticlockwise. In the scene where Frazer is using a scout knife to unscrew a coffin lid, he is turning the knife clockwise, thus tightening the screw.

      • Poor Editing - After Jones has ordered Pike and Frazer to 'about turn' he starts to apologise for getting it wrong but we only hear "Sorr..." and then there's a cut. They obviously removed dialogue but not precisely enough.

      • Poor Editing -The first scene in Bluett's house begins after dialogue, spoken by Mr. Bluett, has already begun.

      • Fluffed line - Mainwaring: "I suppose in the general confusion you dill... still didn't manage to retrieve the spring?"

      • Poor Editing - During the conversation between Frazer and Miss. Baker, Miss. Baker starts speaking, there's a cut and she starts speaking again.

    • QUOTES (16)

      • Phraseometer
        0 = You stupid boy! Mainwaring
        0 = I wondered who'd be the first to spot that one Mainwaring
        1 = Permission to speak sir! Jones
        1 = Don't panic! Don't panic! Jones
        0 = I'd like to volunteer... Jones
        0 = They don't like it up 'em Jones
        0 = We're doomed! Frazer
        0 = Put that light out! Hodges

      • Frazer: You'll no do it. He never volunteers unless Captain Mainwaring's watching.
        Jones: That's a very hurtful thing to say. I'm not a bit like that. Very well. I will do this grizzly thing.
        Frazer: Aye, tell Captain Mainwaring after!
        Jones: Listen, if it wasn't for my age, I'd punch your head in! As it is, I'm giving you formal notice I shall not honour your meat coupons!

      • Pike: I'm not strong, I aint got no muscles, you feel, no muscles at all!

      • Vicar: I must say you're a much braver man than I am Mr. Yateman.
        Verger: Well there's all sorts of courage. I don't know how you have the nerve to get up and give those sermons every Sunday!

      • Pike: There is a law against grave robbing, it's called Abius Corpus!

      • Jones: "Never you mind Mr. Frazer, we've got Mr. Mainwaring to look after us. He's our inspiration in time of need. I tell you what, even now I expect there's an ingenous plan forming in his brain!"

      • Pike: "For the want of a battle, the horse was nailed!"

      • Frazer: "Captain, bad news sir, they've screwed him doon!"

      • Pike(climbing through window): "I saw Wiliam Powell do this once in a film called Raffles"
        Mainwaring: "Oh, Never mind that."
        Pike: "No it wasn't, it was Eroll Flynn".
        Mainwaring: "As a matter of fact it was Ronald Colman, now get inside!"

      • Mainwaring (on the phone): "Capatain Rogers? Oh, Mainwaring here. I was wondering what the position is regarding th...hmmm?... Captain Mainwaring, home guard, I was wondering what the position is regarding Lewis gone sp... tut... Walmington on Sea, Home Guard!. I was wondering what the position is regarding Lewis gun spares... What all?... Oh!".

      • Mr. Bluett: "He come home 'ere, he put the shopping down on the table and unwrapped that very piece of meat you just served him with."
        Jones: "You never know do you?"
        Mr. Bluett: "No, you never do. And do you know what the very last words he said?"
        Jones: "No. What were they?"
        Mr. Bluett: "He stood there, where Mr. Frazer's standing now with the meat in his hand. Look at that, he says, all bloody bone!"

      • Jones: "Horris, old Horris Bluett? He was only in my shop last Wednesday, I gave him two books worth of best end-and-neck!"
        Miss Baker: "And now he's passed away."
        Jones: "He hasn't even had this weeks ration!"

      • Mainwaring, Wilson and Frazer arrive at the funeral directors.
        Mainwaring: "I wish to see Mr. Drury on a matter of utmost urgency."
        Miss Baker: "Oh dear, don't tell me it's poor Mr. Jones."
        Jones (storming in): "'ERE, I HEARD THAT! He always was a money grabbing old cuss! I'll come when I'm called, I'll come when I'm called and not before!"

      • Mainwaring: "You told me you were a fisherman in the Hebrides?!"
        Frazer: "Aye, that I was. But it's a wi-i-ld and lonely place is the isle of Mingaly."

      • Wilson: "Would you kindly step this way please?"
        Mainwaring: "Oh Wilson, bark it out, bark it out!"
        Wilson: "WOULD YOU KINDLY STEP THIS WAY PLEASE!!!"

      • Mainwaring: "I want you to remember Pike, that this is a precission instrument and I want you to promise me that you'll never again let your mother clean it with a bath brick."

    • NOTES (4)

      • Revealed - Mr. Bluett's first name is Sidney, his brother is (was) called Horris and his address is 21 Marigold Avenue.

      • H.E. Drury is the Funeral Director Frazer makes coffins for.

      • It is revealed that Frazer spent his early years being self sufficient, building coffins and practicing dentistry on the isle of Mingaly in the Hebrides... actually there's no such island, but as we're not supposed to believe half of what Frazer tells anyone this can't be classed as a goof.

      • It's important to note that at this stage Frazer merely makes coffins for funeral directors, he doesn't seem to run a funeral director business as he does later on in the series. Neither does he still run a shop for stamp collectors as he did at the beginning of the series.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • Pike & Mainwaring argue about a movie Pike had seen and it's lead star.

        References are made to the actors Wiliam Powell, Eroll Flynn and Ronald Colman and the 1930 version of the movie 'Raffles'.
