  • Mainwaring is demoted to just a private, but can the platoon run without him, i very much doubt it

This episode sees Mainwaring become a private and it is an emotional episode for him really because he makes himself look very silly because he made himself a captain to start with. I think its brilliant the way that the platoon rally round to try and get him back in charge and brilliant the way Frazer wants to take over the platoon himself

Funniest moment has to be when they are doing their foot drill, and Jones has finally got it right, Mainwaring then gets it wrong, which puts Jones off and he goes back to normal and has never got it right since!moreless

    • Drill Sergeant: Why aren't you in the army?
Walker: I was in the army. I got me ticket.
      Drill Sergeant: What for?
Walker: I was allergic for corned beef.

    • Drill Sergeant: What are you laughing at then, lad?
Godfrey: I'm not really laughing. It's my normal expression.
Drill Sergeant: Looking at you, I think it's the only thing that is normal.

    • Pike: I wanna go in the navy... but me mum says I'm too delicate.
Gregory: Oh dear. I am sorry. What's wrong with you, lad?

Gregory: Oh really? (shouting) You'd look bloody funny without one, wouldn't you?!

  • NOTES (2)

    • On 13 December 2008, BBC Two broadcast a version of this episode where the colour had been restored using a technique involving the original black and white film and computer software.

    • During an archive purge in the early 70s the colour version of this episode was erased leaving just a black-and-white back-up copy. Unless a replacement is found "We're Doomed!" to just watch in black-and-white. It's not listed on the BBC's treasure hunt site however.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • The verger tells the news of the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. This means this episode takes place in late May 1941.
