  • Probably the first classic.

This is probably the first classic of the series, and thank God it was recovered after being missing for years. It contains a fine, farcical plot based on historical facts (the fear of an invasion) and offers plenty of character development. By splitting the platoon in two groups, the writers could create more intimate scenes in which different characters interacted. The conversation between Wilson and Pike was the first of many awkward talks. (In this episode Wilson openly denies being Pike's father. Later on, the question was left unanswered, but when LeMesurier asked the writers, they admitted to it.)

There was also some time for secondary characters. Rarely have the Godfrey sisters been given more air time. It turns out that Private Godfrey is actually the sane one in the family.moreless

    • Mainwaring: We waited six months and now that Hitler's at our throats, my platoon is at the pictures.

    • Mainwaring: (shouting through the door) Comen ze here!
      Wilson: They're German's alright!

    • Mainwaring: I think we'd better take the machine gun with us. Grab a magazine both of you.
Jones: I don't think there will be any time for reading sir!

    • Hodges: Oh it's you again is it? What are them bikes doing outside?
Mainwaring: They belong to members of my platoon
Hodges: I don't care who they belong to, get 'em shifted!
Mainwaring: I don't think I like your tone.
Hodges: Oh you don't, then I'll try it in a different tone.
(Hodges pushes his way through the men to Mainwaring)
Hodges: GET 'EM SHIFTED! How's that?

  • NOTES (8)

    • This episode was repeated for the first time as part of a Dad's Army evening of programmes on BBC 2 on 28th December 2001 - 32 years and 9 months after it was first broadcast.

    • Hodges is never referred to by name - so it's possible that at this stage they hadn't decided his name.

    • A small section obviously couldn't be recovered as some lines of dialogue at the end involving an altercation between Mainwaring and Hodges are missing.

    • Godfrey kept a German helmet as a sovenier from World War 1 and used it as a flower pot.

    • The platoon use the Novelty Rock Emporium shop as their temporary base.

    • It is revealed that Pike used to call Wilson 'Daddy' until he was forced to call him Uncle by his mother.

    • Jones mentions his time in the Sudan.

    • During an archive purge in the early 70s this episode was erased and cannot be re-run. The BBC has a campaign asking for anyone who has their own copies of this and other missing episodes to hand them in so they can be digitally restored and added to the existing archives. This is one of two episodes (the other being Season 2 Episode 1 - Operation Kilt) which was successfully recovered having been found by an anonymous man in a skip at Elstree Studios. However three more Dad's Army episodes from this season remain missing.
