Episode Summary

EDIT
The Big Parade
AIRED:
Mainwaring watches a film reel at the cinema which shows Winston Churchill inspecting Army troops and their mascot - a ram. Of course where Mainwaring's concerned, if another platoon has a mascot, so must his. Sponge volunteers a goat from his farm but they have to catch it first. This, of course, ends in complete disaster with Pike up to his neck in it - literally. Meanwhile the town parade is being organised and of course Mainwaring wants the platoon to lead, but Hodges has other ideas...moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • The film they are watching at the beginning of the episode is 'The Spy in Black' (1939) with Conard Veidt, a German actor who fled Germany in 1933 and became a British citizen. Mainwaring still seems to have some difficulty with Veidt's German background.

      • Fluffed line - Mainwaring: "I've seen Counsellor Conway about this on Monday." should be "I'll see Counsellor Conway about this on Monday." to make any sense.

    • QUOTES (11)

      • (The men think Jones has fallen into the bog and after a failed heroic attempt by Frazer they think he's dead).
Jones: (walking up behind the men) I got the rope sir!
(The men take some time to realise what has happened)
Frazer: PUT IT 'ROUND YOUR NECK!

      • Jones: I still say we ought to use a rope sir!
Mainwaring: Shut up and take your trousers off!

      • Frazer: Right, stand up and expose yourselves.

      • Frazer: Now, what we've got to do is to make the ram think that we're perfectly normal.
Walker: That's gonna be a bit difficult(!)

      • Mainwaring: (to Wilson) Why are you always so selfish?!

      • Pike is stuck in the bog
Mainwaring: We have to get something to get him out.
Walker: What about that notice board sir?
        Mainwaring: Yes, get it quick!
Jones: I shouldn't take that sir, it might be something important.
Mainwaring: Nonesense. What does it say Walker?
(Walker turns the sign round to reveal it says "BEWARE OF THE BOG").

      • (The platoon march down the street covered in mud).
Mainwaring: There's the warden, no doubt he'll have some clever and sarchastic comment to make, just ignore him. SMARTLY NOW, MARCH TO ATTENTION!
Hodges: I'm gonna enjoy this! I'm gonna enjoy this!
(They march past, Hodges is silent)
Verger: Are you alright Mr. Hodges? You look as if you're gonna have a heart attack!
Hodges: I've waited months for this moment and now it's come I can't think of anything to say. I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING TO SAY!

      • (Hodges is giving his marching orders)
        Hodges: ADDEEHAAN!
        (The wardens stand to attention)
        Hodges: AA-DAA-DEE!
        (The wardens stand at ease)

      • Phraseometer
1 = You stupid boy! Mainwaring
0 = I wondered who'd be the first to spot that one Mainwaring
4 = Permission to speak sir! Jones
        1 = Don't panic! Don't panic! Jones
        0 = I'd like to volunteer... Jones
0 = They don't like it up 'em Jones
        0 = We're doomed! Frazer
0 = Put that light out! Hodges

      • Mainwaring: I shall be marching with a ram.
Hodges: Your personal life has got nothing to do with me.

      • Wilson: Perhaps we could use a ram ourselves?
Frazer: Private Sponge here, he's a farmer, he maybe could help us?
Sponge: Yes I've got a few, but they're very funny tempered at this time of the year.
Pike: Why are they funny tempered at this time of year Mr Frazer?
Frazer: Well it's like the man says son, it's the time of year (taps his nose) ... it's the time of year! (looks away uncomfortably).
Pike: Well what time of year?!
Walker: The time when they're after their...
Mainwaring: (interrupting) Yes, alright, alright, that'll do! (turns to Wilson) Don't you tell this boy anything?

    • NOTES (5)

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • Platoon: Whistling the tune associated with Laural and Hardy
As Hodges leaves the hall after being shown up by Mainwaring, the platoon mock him by whistling the infamous tune from the many films and TV series starring the slapstick comedy duo Stan Laural and Oliver Hardy.

      • Pike: "I saw them do this in The Last of The Mohicans, Gary Cooper!"
Pike sticks grass in is hat to imitate an Indian Mohican from the story The Last of The Mohicans. Strangely enough, in all the movie versions that exist of this story, made both before and after the war, Gary Cooper doesn't appear to star in any of them. (a goof or Pike being 'Stupid'? You decide!)
