When Gary and Valene discuss Gary's leaving for Dallas, they are referring to the events of Gary drinking in the Knots Landing first season episodes, "Bottom of the Bottle" parts 1 and 2.

During the hiatus, Larry Hagman decided to try and renegotiate his contract based on the huge media hype surrouding the "Who Shot J.R?" mania. At one point, producers and Hagman reached a stand still in negotations and they thought of firing Hagman and replacing him with actor Robert Culp. However, producers rightfully determined that Hagman was the only one who could play J.R. and successfully concluded negotations with him, which included a huge salary increase for Hagman. Hagman, reportedly, did not participate in the filming of this episode and his scenes in this episode were shot at a later time and inserted into this episode.
An actor's strike in Hollywood delayed the premiere of this season, resulting in an usually long hiatus between the previous season and this season.
This episode was originally scheduled to air as a two-part episode with the following episode. However, CBS decided to air the first part of this episode immediately after a rerun of the previous season ending cliffhanger when J.R. was shot. The conclusion to this episode aired two nights later on Sunday at 10:00 p.m.
