Finally after 6 long and arduous months, the answer to the question that gripped the world "Who Shot J.R.?" is finally revealed. The episode begins with Sue Ellen's arrest for shooting J.R.; eventually her bail is posted by a mystery benefactor and while at a session with Dr. Elby, Sue Ellen comes to the realization that she could not have shot J.R. because she no longer had the gun when she returned home the next morning. Sue Ellen then returns to South Fork and there finds J.R., who is ready to call the police. Just then Kristen comes out of the house and Sue Ellen reveals that it was Kristen who shot J.R. However, Kristen has one last trump card up her sleeve: she is pregnant with J.R.'s child and threatens to reveal this to all if she is arrested.

This episode was huge...more than 83 million Americans and over 300 million viewers worldwide watched this episode, and 76 percent of all televisions in the United States were tuned into the show. Its 53.3 rating and 76 share made it, at the time, the highest-rated program ever, besting the 51.1 rating and 71 percent share earned four years earlier by the eighth and final part of the miniseries "Roots". The previous record for a TV series was the 45.9 share earned by the final episode of "The Fugitive" in 1967. The record set by "Who Done It?" held for two and a half years and was finally broken when the last episode of "M*A*S*H*" earned a 60.2 rating on February 28, 1983.moreless

This is a pivotal episode to say the least, and the best known in series history. The police arrest Sue Ellen for shooting J.R. because of her fingerprints being on the weapon. So it is up to Sue Ellen to find a way to clear her name. The Ewings won't pay her bail, but an unidentified person does. While this storyline was suberb, the revelation of J.R's shooter was really lame. Sue Ellen uses "hypnosis" to find out that she put the gun down when she was at Kristen's condo, and remembers that Kristen was at Southfork the next day to hide the gun. Sue Ellen gives this info to J.R. and J.R. immediately believes her and it doesn't take much for Kristen to admit to it. Kristen uses her pregnancy to keep J.R. from turning her into the police.moreless

    • There are three different takes from the flashback in which Sue Ellen visits Kristin (obviously filmed during one session!), more or less ready to shot J.R. . The first flashback can be seen in the previous episode "No more Mr. nice guy (1)", the two others in this episode. In all takes Sue Ellen has her handbag fixed with her left elbow, while the pistol is in the beginning always in her right hand. In the first one (from Kristin's point of view) Sue Ellen keeps the pistol during the whole time in her right hand, she takes the drink with her left hand and leaves with the pistol. In the second one (Sue Ellen in hypnosis) she changes the pistol from left to right, for the rest of the take the gun isn't seen anymore, she takes the drink with her left hand. In the finale take (Sue Ellen reveals that she couldn't have done it) she has the pistol in the right hand, put it down from her right hand onto the table so she could take the drink and left the gun onto the table. However, there is one absolute truth but wrong memories.

    • During the scene where Kristin is revealed as the shooter, J.R. is still in his wheelchair and tries to get away from Sue Ellen. However, later in the scene, he is standing!

    • When Sue Ellen visits Dr. Elbee for the hypnosis, the station wagon is in front of the building. This can't be possible since she has not returned to Southfork following her arrest. After the hypnosis, she goes to Southfork in a taxi.
