Doctor Griffin: 'It's not the cough that carries you off, but the coffin they carry you off in.'
Imad Abdullah: (On Steve and Claire's pregnancy as well as Hugh and Alice's recent birth) I suppose you'll be renaming Carousel, Carrycots soon. Claire: Jealousy doesn't suit you. Imad: No! There's only one reason for a sleepless night in my book. (winks) Claire: Thanks, Mr Studmuffin.
Female PC: And as yo-yo knickers. Dalziel: Oi, oi, oi, that was at a party. And I was somewhat tired and emotional. Lecturer: Yes, Mr Dalziel? Dalziel: Well, I suppose I do sometimes call one of my colleagues, darling. Lecturer: And how do you think they feel about that? Dalziel: Well I don't think he minds, do you Peter? (Pascoe rolls his eyes.)
Dalziel: Who are you? Griffin: Claudine Griffin, your new slicer and dicer. Pascoe: What happened to Mason? Griffin: Oh he's gone back to Ireland. Joined the Priesthood. I just hope I can fill his shoes. Dalziel: I promise you love, it won't be too difficult.

This episode was originally aired in two parts. The concluding part was aired the following day.
Carousel The name given to Steve Pitt and his friends is Carousel. This is an allusion to the 1956 Rodgers and Hammerstein film of the same name. The main character discovers his wife is pregnant and falls into crime with his friend Jigger to try and support her.
First Night The name of Steve Pitt's restaurant is a reference to the opening performance of a theatrical performance, it is also a reference to himself and his friends who all had occupations surrounding the theatre.
