Dalziel and Pascoe

A cash and transit depot is ram-raided with large amounts of cash stolen and one of the security officers killed. Meanwhile at Wetherton station the officers are having a training session on etiquette in the workplace. The Lecturer writes down inappropriate names such as baby doll and baby-cakes as the female PC's call them out. DC Lateef enters and informs Dalziel about the armed robbery and death of guard.

At the crime scene it is discovered that the perpetrators got away with approximately £600,000 in used notes, making it untraceable as they were on their way to be shredded. Dalziel and Pascoe recognise the dead guard as Dave Compton who was a police officer who was thrown out of the force five years ago for possession. Dave joined the force thirty years ago on the same day as Dalziel. Dalziel asserts that Dave wasn't into drugs but Pascoe says that drugs were found in the man's locker, which was why he was thrown out. Dalziel tells Pascoe how Dave stood by him during the 1983 miner's strike, when Dalziel's family wouldn't speak to him. He believes that Dave was set up, Pascoe asks why but Dalziel says that he guess he'll never know now.

Dalziel goes to Dave's sister Pat to pay his respects but she is angry, saying that he was just like the rest of the force and soon bad mouthed Dave as well. She says that Dalziel was supposed to have been Dave's friend.

At a restaurant called First Night a group of friends comprising of actors, writers and prop makers, celebrate their ten year anniversary since they first formed their troop, 'Carousel'. One of the couples comprising of Hugh and Alice are also celebrating the fact that they will soon be parents as Alice is due to give birth shortly. Jerry the writer of the group disrupts the party when he joins them uninvited and drunk. He is still resentful at being exiled from Carousel and his friends over an argument where they all believed Alice over him.

Lateef traces a call made to Dave's cellphone from the payphone at First Night. Dalziel and Pascoe enter First Night just after Jerry leaves it. The two officers meet the owner of First Night, Steve Pitt who was also a part of the 'Carousel' group. Through Pitt's girlfriend Claire Higgins who says that she was Dave Compton's friend, they find that the former officer lived at a halfway house for a while, which was when she met him as she worked there for five years. She says that Dave had sorted himself out pretty quickly, got a job and was promoted to shift supervisor. She explains that it was his birthday today, which was why she called him.

Hugh and Alice drop off Rebecca Stevens at her home, she was also at the party. Jerry is at home and we see flashbacks of a time when he and Claire were together, and they were happy. Meanwhile Claire is at home with Steve and can't sleep, she keeps thinking about Dave. Steve says that he feels sorry for the poor man as he was going on holiday tomorrow as well. However she can't remember telling Steve that, but he says that she must have or how could he have known. The phone rings and it is their friends Hugh and Alice who have had a baby girl. The friends all meet at the hospital, where Claire reveals that her and Steve are also expecting a baby as well.

Dalziel and Pascoe go to the morgue to get the results on Dave Compton's body. They are surprised to find that Doctor Mason has been replaced by a new Doctor Claudine Griffin. She tells them that Dave died from an inter-cranial haemorrhage as he had an unusually thin skull. She also finds that he was a heroin user and had been for some time, evidenced by the state of his teeth.

The police find the car that was earlier seen being torched with a flare by the robbers. Lateef tells the police duo that the car was stolen locally last week and they also found night vision goggles inside. Dave Compton's car is also found at the airport as someone tried to break into it, First Night was also reported as being burgled last night.

At Hugh and Alice's home the group are celebrating the birth of their baby girl. Steve and Imad Abdul are talking in the kitchen while the others are in the living room with the baby now named as Rebecca. It is revealed that First Night is not as financially stable as they first thought and it was them who robbed the depot. Steve hit Dave with the baseball bat but it was only meant to knock him unconscious. Steve is confident that there was nothing to link the two of them to Dave Compton so they have nothing to fear.

At the airport Dalziel, Pascoe and Lateef are with Dave's car and find that he was planning to go to Bangkok and that it was in fact his birthday, so Claire was telling the truth. It is revealed that Steve and Alice are having an affair but she's not willing to leave Hugh yet as he is rich, while Steve is not.
