Part two.
DC Lateef and his climbing partner are still trapped inside the cave. While the police and family and friends wait outside concerned, the rescue team find the trapped duo and bring them out. However Parvez Lateef is tragically brought out dead. PC Spicer blames Dalziel for his death. The stone sample Lateef stowed in his jacket is sent for analysis.
Dalziel and Pascoe visit Vanda Dewhurst and she confesses to knowing Eddie Summers. She tells the police officers that Lynn Barron knew about her husband's affair with Sophie and that she was going to take the children and live with Eddie as a family. Then Lynn disappeared, later discovered to be murdered. Then two years ago Vanda persuaded Eddie to live with her as his health was deteriorating. Then one day he suddenly left causing Vanda to search everywhere for him. Dalziel tells her that he moved in to a home opposite Nerissa Barron before kidnapping her. Vanda explains to them that Eddie Summers was Nerissa's biological father.
Streeter is cleared of any current involvement because of a break in his parole he is back in prison. It is Parvez Lateef's funeral, Dalziel and Pascoe are about to go on their way to the funeral when Barron and Pyke stop by on the way to pick Dalziel up to chat to him on the way. Pascoe says he will meet him at the funeral. Dalziel tells them that he will solve the case and reveal the truth. After the funeral, Dalziel goes back to his office and sees PC Spicer still at work. He asks her why she's still here and she explains that she wants the case solved for Lateef's sake. They end up arguing as Spicer feels that Parvez died because of Dalziel constantly applying too much pressure on them all. Dalziel says that if he could bring Lateef back he would.
Dalziel and Pascoe visit John Barron to tell him their developments in the case and that Nerissa is Eddie Summers's daughter. Back at the police station, Spicer makes peace with Dalziel by bringing him coffee and new information which narrows down the time of death of Lynn Barron to a two hour window from her last known appearance. Pyke tells Dalziel that he will only allow him 24 more hours on this case. Nerissa tells Dalziel and Pascoe about her mother leaving and that she was going to take the children and be with Eddie Summers, confirming the information Vanda told them. Nerissa confesses to killing her mother, she remembers hitting her over the head but not how she disposed of the body. Dalziel and Pascoe are sceptical, if she did do it she could not have disposed of the body as she was too young. John Barron finds Vanda dead in the lake. Meanwhile Nerissa tells Charlie that they aren't siblings, they are not even related.
Pyke visits Nerissa at home. She soon recognises his voice as that who visited Summers just before he was killed. Pyke murders Nerissa. Dalziel and Pascoe discover that John Barron was a social uncle to Charlie before later adopting him. PC Spicer watches the Barron home videos found in Lynn's room at Vanda's home. She goes to Charlie to get more videos from him as he filmed most of them. She discovers that he wasn't born deaf and lost his hearing slowly from four years old, which is why his speech isn't that badly affected. She learns a lesson about loss from him.
Dalziel leaves his office, its empty. He stops to look at a framed picture of the team all together at a party. He hears Lateef's voice, who says You alright, Boss. Pascoe tells Dalziel that he found that on the night of the hit and run that killed Mandy Phillips, Barron and Pyke were on the same shift and claimed that the damage to their patrol car was due to hitting a lamppost. Pascoe suggests that Barron and Pyke hit Mandy and covered it up. They go to see Pyke about the accident to their car on 29th October 1979. Dalziel covertly takes hair samples from Pyke's dog. They ask Pyke about the hit and run and if he was involved, he denies it.
Dalziel wants to ask Charlie about his mother's death, but he was only five years old at the time. Dalziel wants to try a cognitive interview. Charlie agrees to the interview and he tries to recount what he remembers. Spicer tells the duo that Pyke's dog hairs match those found at Eddie's home. Charlie remembers his Dad, John Barron being in the passenger side of a police car when it hit his mother. They interview Pyke with the new evidence and accuse him of Lynn Barron's murder.
Needing more evidence the two detectives go to the moors to find any shafts that Lynn's body could have been thrown down to end up being washed into the cave where it was later found. They find the remains of an old pumphouse and send a climbing team down to find anything that could have been a murder weapon, they find a possibility and also something else. Dalziel and Pascoe tell Barron that they have just found the body of Nerissa. Barron confesses to killing Lynn. She had found out about his affair with Sophie and was going to take away the children and she was threatening to tell everyone about the hit and run. He hit her repeatedly with a car jack, stripped her and wrapped her in polythene, dumping her body down the well. Barron says that Pyke drove the car that killed Phillips and that they covered for one another. Pyke put Summers in the frame for Lynn's disappearance and must have killed Summers and Nerissa. He wants Pyke to go down for what he did to Nerissa. Dalziel promises that they will arrest Pyke and they arrest Barron. Pascoe, Dalziel and Spicer stand by Lateef's grave, the case finally solved and Dalziel tells them about the voice at the station, they all agree that it means that he's ok.
