Tom goes out biking with a close friend who convinces him to forget about Patty and to break away from her clutches. Tom seems to seriously consider what his friend tells him.
David, who has been fighting with Ellen about the amount of time she has been devoting to Patty and the firm, temporarily leaves to visit his sister Katie. Meanwhile, Katie receives a call from a guilty Greg, but doesn't answer it. Much later, David arrives at Katie's home and learns everything about Greg's deceit and the case against Frobisher.
Against the advice of Ray Fiske, Frobisher pulls the $100 million settlement offer and decides to proceed with the trial. What he cares about now is his reputation, which has been damaged since this whole fiasco began.
Back at Patty's place, Tom finally confronts Patty and lays down an ultimatum -- that he's leaving her to join Martin Cutler unless he becomes a named partner with Hewes & Associates. Patty doesn't take the bait and lets Tom go with concealed disgust.
Meanwhile, Larry Popler, one of the claimants in the case against Frobisher, questions Arthur for pulling the settlement offer. Frobisher, in turn, assures Popler that he and his wife will be taken care of just as long as he plays his part. Later, Popler goes to the rest of Patty's clients convincing them to fire Patty.
Ellen goes out to a Thai dinner with her mom and confides to her about the fights she's been having with David. Ellen's mother comforts her and gives her advice on her future married life.
Back at Hewes & Associates, Andrew and Felicia, two of the firm's top lawyers, approach Patty and ask her about Tom's vacated position. Patty then learns from one of the claimants that she has been replaced by Tom Shayes to represent them in court.
Frobisher learns about the recent development and is pleased with it. Fiske, on the other hand, is cautious and still wants Frobisher to make a lower settlement offer. During the meeting between Fiske and Shayes, Tom shuts down Ray's attempts to settle the case out of court.
Later, when Tom, his wife Deb, his friend and his friend's girlfriend go out for drinks, Tom's friend congratulates him for having the balls to finally break free from Patty and start this new path on his own. After a few drinks, Tom seems to regret his decision of leaving Patty. As soon as he becomes sober, he goes to Ellen and asks her to work with him in the Frobisher case, but Ellen turns him down. Meanwhile, he is being pressured by Cutler to still join their firm.
In another part of the city, Gregory is lured by a blonde girl in a bar onto the street, where he is beaten up by goons hired by people working for Frobisher. He gets the message that he should stop trying to reconnect with Katie.
Patty goes on a walk with Tom, initially patronizing Tom for losing her clients to him instead of someone else. She then later shows her true nature and demolishes Tom's morale and confidence in taking on the case by himself. Later, after much thought, Tom decides to get back into Patty's fold. He is promoted to partner, but his name still won't be attached to Hewes & Associates. Much to Patty's delight, Tom convinces the claimants to return to Patty as well.
David gets back to their New York apartment and make up with Ellen. He also reveals to her everything that Katie knew about Greg and her reason for lying in the deposition. Ellen goes to Patty with the new information prompting her to order a subpoena for Gregory.
In the flash forwards, Ellen sits at the police station talking with Hollis Nye, who is trying to help her. Then flashback scenes on the attempt on Ellen's life are shown. Nye tells the police about the attack on Ellen, but when the police arrive at Patty's apartment, it is clean and blood-free.
