  • Always wanted to give this a shot because it's been available to stream on Netflix... and in usual FX style, the pilot had a great twist.

I'm pretty excited about the fact that I've avoided spoilers for this show. The pilot was great. The acting top notch. Glenn Close was amazing in The Shield and this character seems to be another step up in intensity.

Early on I'm a little bit worried about the number of conversations that go to painful lengths to avoid revealing secrets, but given the season is only 13 episodes and I know they've continued to bring on new big names post Ted Danson, I'm hoping they'll be answers in time.

It will be interesting to see if they can turn Rose Byrne's character into the aggressor over the season and not simply have her as the victim of every other character's ill intent. It would be fun to root for her to take everyone down.
  • A new legal thriller that has all the potentials it needs to be one heck of a show..just as good as a pilot episode can get!

The show started with a young lady, walking around the city of New York covered in blood. We would then go back to six months before, displaying the same character, Ellen Parsons in a suit, who just got accepted to work in a law firm. She then decided to turn it down to work with a famous Patty Hewes. Patty Hewes, a cold, ruthless and ambitious lawyer had decided to take the case involving Arthur Frobisier, who was just proven not guilty not long ago. Ellen then learned the level of commitment required for this case was extremely high, complicated by the fact that her best friend was involved in this case.

We would then learned some of the characters are not who they appear to be and the ending was quite good that we saw The six months later Ellen, being investigated, breaking up her silence ,"get me a lawyer"

Overall, great cast and interesting plot combined with unexpected surprises. I think the next few episodes would be critical as it's interesting to see if they could live up to the expectations set up by an incredible pilot.
  • Great legal drama exploring the darker side of litigation.

Wow, what a show, it is a about time that a legal show was written where both sides darks sides are explored. Too often in legal dramas there is always right and wrong and that is just not the way that litigation works. Good choices for the actors, a good departure for Ted Danson from his usual comic roles and it is always a pleasure to see Glenn Close in a strong role, a clever and well thought out show. I am looking forward to watching the whole series, hopefully it can maintain the standard and pace it has set so far.
  • Proves "Damages" will be a promising series

Here in Australia, the Nine network first aired this episode and then announced that there would be FIVE encores of the episode. I jumped at the opportunity to watch it, watching the third encore on daytime television. After viewing this episode, I knew I was in for a treat with the rest of the series. Glenn Close and Rose Byrne are both absolutely sensational as two intriguing characters. I might have some added bias because Byrne is Australian, but I can see promise in the show already from the characters.

The drama plays out, showing flashbacks and clips of the present time, already creating the atmosphere of mystery and scandal. The pilot episode has left me asking questions, wanting more, and I think it's exactly what the creators wanted me to feel.
  • Impressive...

I was skeptical about this show. I know it has a great cast and all, but honestly.... there was just something about it that kept me away. Oh yea. The fact that its a law show.

But god, its notthing like the other ones on TV. there are not even court room scenes! There are no episodic plots. This pilot was excellent. The idea of the two timelines thing is not neccesserely original, but it definitely feels like that, and it's executed very well. The characters are well defined, and even though some of them seem clichéd at first, by the end of the episode you'll realize they are not. The end of the episode... well that twist... is nice. It just really shocked me. Damages is worth watching.

This is a review for the pilot episode of Damages, titled, "Get me a lawyer." Based on this episode you could not tell that this was going to be one of the greatest dramas of all-time, but you could see that this was a very special show that would feature very elaborate story arcs. Glenn Close, a full blown movie star, and Ted Danson, a master of sitcoms, were on board so the show had star power, but it was the tremendous writing that made this an excellent show. This, and maybe Lost, are the only shows out there where you really found yourself engaging and guessing as to what will happen. That shows you how great Damages is.
  • Unbelievably excellent!

This was a fantastic episode and I'm very excited to see what comes next. Not only was it suspenseful and exciting but it was oddly humorous, witty, and smart. I was actually wondering why Ellen was hired so quickly and I guess that question was basically answered although it appears that there's alot more to come down the road. It's great to see Tate Donovan in a new role. He was great in the O.C. and I'm glad to see him in a new show that's just as good if not better.

If the pilot is any indication this show is going to be around for a long time.
  • This show is... interesting to say the least.

I must say, Glenn Close in a dark tv-show on FX, it sounded like they wanted to bring back captain Rawling, but no sir, this is a whole other woman we're dealing with.

The show's not one of the fast-paced ones, but what it lacks in speed it makes up in suspense. The flash forward scenes seem a bit 'stylish', just for the sake of trying to make it more interesting - at first, but they work. It gives you a feeling of: what the hell is and what the hell will be going on here?

The pilot episode has a nice feel, some plot twists and a great, great cast. Even Ted Danson, not one of my favorite actors, seems believable. But this is Glenn's show. She's giving her best, in a role where she's cold-blooded, calm on the outside, raging on the inside, giving everybody attitude.

FX has shows in which the lead character's flawed in some ways and this is no exception. Don't quite know whether Glenn Close's character's good or bad.

This is a very smart show, that takes its audience very serious and the writing is brilliant.
  • hmmm dont know what to make of this show as yet...but i will be sure to see episode 2 so thats a good sign i suppose

This show was quite confusing for me...i mean the way the pilot was written was super clever, the casting is amazing and you can see it in the acting and dialogue but im still not coninced about this show for a few reasons. reason number1 being that its a mini series so just 1 season and ts done, whereas i like to watch something that progresses over the years (like carmed, friends and so on)...

reason number2 is that its a legal drama. ok fair enough legal drams can be interesting at times (this one seems to be, and boston legal isnt that bad), but havent we seen enough of them?! I dont know...what i do know is i felt the same after the first episode of showtime's 'Meadowlands' and Fx's 'The Riches'...but after 2/3 episodes i was hooked so it may just become another one of my faves.....TIME WILL TELL :P
  • Excellently done.

I'm not an avid FX fan. I enjoy "Nip/Tuck" and "It's Always Sunny..." but other than that, I don't really watch the network. And when a heard that Glenn Close would be starring in her own FX drama - about law, no less, I paid no attention and figured it would just be another show to not watch. But then I started reading more about the show and seeing previews, and reading reviews, and I quickly changed my mind about the series and decided I had to check it out. I am not sorry at all and am now a fan of this thrilling legal drama that will probably redefine the genre.

The pilot basically introduces us to the characters, the case, and the mystery for the season. The show opens with Ellen Parsons running out of a building, covered in blood. She is soon detained by the police but is nonresponsive. From here the show switches back and forth from present day to the main story which occurs several months earlier.

Ellen is approached to intern at the law firm of Patty Hewes, a cutthroat high stakes litigator, who is known as being cruel and bloodthirsty (but she usually wins her cases). Patty seems to see something in Ellen but it turns out that the only reason Ellen was hired is because Ellen's sister, Katie, can help out in Patty's case against Arthur Frobister (Ted Danson), a billionaire who sold his company stocks and left his employees broke. "Damages" is an intriguing, dramatic, and thrilling series that deserves recognition. The plot twists are surprising, the characters are interesting and realistic - but not particularly people you'd want to associate with, and the writing is excellent. People will be talking about this show for a long time, and, unlike FX's recent "Dirt", it will actually deserve it.
  • What a thrilling debut!

When I learned about who was in Damages cast, I felt sure this would be a show to watch. I was not mistaken. It felt like a roller coaster from the first few minutes and never let up until that shocker of an ending. Glenn Close is just a wonder to behold in the role of Patty Hewes. Close has shown that scary side before in roles like Fatal Attraction. Hewes just scares the bejesus out of me. She can be all smiles and sweetness and then she'll break your kneecaps. I haven't seen Tate Donovan in quite awhile, but Tom's turning into quite the character, too. I think Uncle Pete probably has some very unsavory "friends" that can do some dirty work for him. It's hard to know just who is the bad guy/good guy in this show. Especially just from this one episode. Rose Byrne is doing a great job as Ellen, and I'm just completely fascinated how she ended up in police custody. How did all this happen?? I can't wait to find out. Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek have impressed me so far, too. I've loved Zeljko Ivanek since he was in 24, and this is just a treat to see him on a weekly series again.

The show is dramatic, suspenseful, and very cleverly written. We just don't have a clue what's coming, and I love it that way. Is it Tuesday, yet??
  • intriguing / twisted / strong cast / good plot / devious story telling / major league cons / let's hope this keeps up! :)

I rarely give a show any reviews, until I was able to watch a full season of it, or, in this case, I figured, being the pilot episode, I could always voice my opinions for whoever gives a darn :)

Anyways, Glenn Close's character is truly well suited for her and so far with episode 1, this pilot shows potential for entertainment.

The premise shows Hewes' firm to be somewhat, loose in their ways of gaining victory, and shows some very devious and twisted moves, almost like a chess board, which can be good, but I hope they don't overdo it, or at least, I hope that mistakes will be made by the Hewes' team, because if this is all about them winning, regardless of cost, the show's storytelling will in itself become way too predictable.

The characters seemed at ease with their roles, that's a plus. The plot is twisted with moves and counter moves, but hopefully, this will come back sometimes to realistic losses, not just wins.

    Cheers!
  • Nicely done.

There is nothing wrong about this episode. All the required elements are in their respective positions. The dancers are on the dance floor, the pieces on the chess board. And this is one game of chess you wouldn't want to miss for the life of it.

From start to finish, this episode will keep you near the edge of your seat, occasionally falling off. The short glimpses of the future, or the present more like, intertwined with the past, and the start of the main character's career, make for a confusing mumble jumble that you will only unravel near the end of the episode, leaving you to marvel at it's intricateness and novelty even when the 53 minutes are long gone.

The amount of characters in this show seemed a bit confusing at first, I was unable to connect the dots and had no clue who was who and what their purpose was. Who's the bad guy and who are the good guys? I suppose a clearcut division is nothing short of boring, but I'm glad that as the episode went on I got a firm grip on the situation, and I refuse to let go.

Let's hope the episodes that follow are anything like this, and I'll definitely stick around!
  • Wow, what a way to start a series!

This was an incredible thrill ride from start to finish. It really had the feel of a movie except there isn't an ending. The characters were excellent and Glenn Close is extraordinary as a money hungry, relentless, ruthless lawyer who only goes for the big money cases. The flashback scenes start to bring the pieces together until it seems like everything is connected. There are no coincidences professionally, personally or morally in this story. I'm not a big fan of lawyer shows, but this one is different. I'm eagerly awaiting the remaining episodes to see just how twisted this show will be.
