Episode Summary

(1/17/2012) Ever since 2000, Finland’s students have been named some of the highest achievers in the world, based on a well-respected international exam. It’s called PISA - the Program for International Student Assessment -- and educators say it’s the best measure available to compare students in different countries. You might think that Finnish students must spend hours and hours in the classroom and cramming for tests. But what is interesting – and perhaps startling -- is that Finnish students spend fewer hours in the classroom than students in any other developed country. In fact, primary school children even take a 15 minute “play” break between each class. It may sound unorthodox, but whatever they’re doing it appears to be working and they are routinely outperforming U.S. students by a long shot. A look at the so-called “Finnish miracle.”moreless
