The women: Kristi Yamaguchi, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Marlee Matlin, Monica Seles, Shannon Elizabeth, and Priscilla Presley perform either the Cha Cha or the Fox Trot.
  • The women outdid the men in the first week of competition...

After the men danced Monday night it was time for the women to strut their stuff on the ballroom floor. The episode was more improved in terms of dancing...

First up was Shannon Elizabeth with her partner Derek Hough. They danced the cha-cha which was both well-choreographed and entertaining. I agree with the judges that Elizabeth should work on her flexibility. She was awarded straight 7's which isn't all that surprising considering that most competitors who start off the evening receive a similar score.

Monica Seles and Jonathan Roberts turned in a technically flawed foxtrot. If she's able to improve her upper body technique I believe Monica will fare better next week. She was given straight 5's which was likely due to her loose arms.

Arriving next was Marissa Jaret Winokur and Tony Davolini. Tuning her sassy persona into a cha-cha worked fairly well but the dance lacked content. I think more attention was paid to Tony and his flamboyant pants during parts of the number. The judges advised them to add on more for next week's performance before giving the pair straight 6's.

The most surprising dance came from Priscilla Presley and Louis van Amstel's elegant foxtrot. Presley shocked viewers with her impressive control and posture. Next week's Latin round will determine if her dancing abilities are limited or infinite. Her high score of 24 was well-deserved.

Easily the best routine of the night was early favorite Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas's impeccable foxtrot. Kristi already possesses great posture and technique. Although their score of 27 is debatable (I believe a 25 or 26 would have been more deserving) it was by far the most polished dance of the lot.

Rounding out the night was Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin & Fabian Sanchez, a newcomer to the show. It was clear in the video shown before the performance that this couple is both dedicated and extremely hardworking. Matlin told the audience due to her hearing disability she can only execute the dance based on her partner's actions and movements. Overall, she remained on the beat during her cha-cha, even more than some of the other competitors. I believed it was worthy of straight 8's but the judges made clear they would remain as equally hard on her as the others, giving her two 7's and an 8. Perhaps they did this to prove they would be fair but I have a feeling viewers shared my stunned opinion.

All in all this night was an improvement over the last. The hosting wasn't as sharp, with Samantha cutting several contenders' speeches short with horrendous lines ("Let's see if your scores are scary"). But hey, she's better than Drew Lachey.

Judging on these first two episodes I think a woman will be rewarded the Mirror Ball trophy this season. This, however, may change in the upcoming week. With a completely different style of dancing being required, early predictions could be proved wrong. Hopefully this season won't be as unpredictably unfair as Season 5.

  • The men may bring the humor, but it's the women who bring the talent!

    "Perfect"
I thought last night's episode was good, but boy was I wrong! Tonight's episode has got to be the best first episode this show has ever seen!!! Don't get me wrong - the men were good, but if they have any hopes of beating the women, they're going to have to bring out their best and put in more hours! I thought all the women tonight were good. Monica had some trouble with nerves, so she got the lowest scores. I still admire her though. I feel like she and I share a type of kinship: I'm always overly-nervous too, so I know how she felt. I know I could never dance like that in front of millions of people! Marissa Jaret Winokur was sooooo funny!!! She's one of my favorite because of her bubbly and easy-going personality. She even brought it to the dance floor, and that's what made her so fun to watch. Shannon Elizabeth was pretty good. She and Derek look and dance really well together. Priscilla Presley was great too. I never believed she could dance like that! She really shocked me. Another shocker was Marlee Matlin. I was surprised when I heard there was going to be a deaf girl on the show because she would be hard to teach, but she danced really really well! She danced better than most other girls tonight. The best dancer of the night would have to be Kristi. She was AMAZING!!! I thought she would be a great dancer because of her skating background, and I was right. She got a score of 27!!! I think that's the highest I've ever seen on the first episode of this show! I can't wait to see what next week will bring!moreless

    • (Judges comments after Fabian Sanchez & Marlee Matlin's Cha Cha) Bruno Tonioli: I counted all the way through, and you hardly missed a beat. Carrie Ann Inaba: That was almost unbelievable. You are so fluid, you move with such ease. Len Goodman: You had great choreography. Just try to control your arms when you dance.

    • (Judges comments after Priscilla Presley & Louis van Amstel's Fox Trot) Bruno Tonioli: This was an uncompromising, smoking hot Fox Trot. Carrie Ann Inaba: You just proved to so many people that age is just a number, because you were the queen of that dance floor. Len Goodman: It was a proper Fox Trot. No gimmicks, no props.

    • (Judges comments after Marissa Jaret Winokur & Tony Dovolani's Cha Cha) Bruno Tonioli: You have eye-popping pep and personality. Carrie Ann Inaba: I don't think there was enough content for a Cha Cha. Len Goodman: This girl's got more talent than that showed.

Lift it to shift it, and move round that floor.

Carrie Ann Inaba: You have such great energy, and such confidence. Len Goodman: Great start to this evening. You didn't straighten your legs, so you lost a little bit of hip action.
