THE FINALS!!! The remaining 3 had 4 dances to get through this week on both nights. The first night they each got to do a style they hadn't yet, then the ever-popular Freestyle! The second night they got to revisit their favorite dance of the season (which were scored 30 for 1st, 28 for 2nd & 26 for 3rd); then, after 3rd place elimination, the final 2 had to do an Instant Samba.
Rob Kardashian's first dance was a Waltz. He was "flowing and glowing", as Bruno put it...and that's not far from the truth. He was confident but not cocky. He made a couple of very small slips, but nothing too bad (one I didn't even notice...but it happened RIGHT IN FRONT of the Judges' table...awkward). His freestyle was a '20s/'30s style that started out slow (not in a bad way) and picked up steam until he did an amazing spin with Cheryl horizontal across his shoulders. He got a Perfect 30.
His revisited dance was his tribute to his father from Week 3's "Memorable Year", a Foxtrot to "Fly Me To the Moon". I had simply written that he was "improved" that week; this time he positively floated. It was lovely, but he came in 3rd on that. Since he made the Top 2, he did the Instant Samba (where the Final 2 did like a relay to "Shake Your Bon-bon" by Ricky Martin. Well, that he certainly did! This samba was very similar to his breakthrough Samba last week, and he looked like he was having a blast.
Ricki Lake started with a Cha-Cha. She looked spectacular in a red tasslled dress, and she made those tassles fly! The judges said that she could have been a little sultrier, but no one can fault her steps. Her freestyle started with her bursting through a picture of a Week 1 Her, and you can definitely see the difference. She did some lifts that she would never have considered in previous weeks and fulled them off (although she was a little shaky on the last dismount, but she was spinning horizontally on Derek's shoulders, so I can't really blame her).
She revisited Week 4's Movie Night, doing her "Psycho" Tango. She had gotten a near-perfect score that time, almost impossible to improve upon...but improve she did! She landed in 1st place; but unfortunately, it was not enough to make the Top 2; she was eliminated and ended up in 3rd place.
J.R. Martinez's ankle was better, but I really think that it threw him off a little. His first dance was also a Cha-Cha. I thought he looked a tad careful and awkward, and the judges agreed, giving him the lowest score of the night. However, he really came back in the Freestyle, doing some lifts and moves that were almost impossible to believe! Apparently he wasn't nearly as nervous about the Freestyle as his partner, Karina, was! He was rewarded with a Perfect 30, matching Rob's.
He revisited his "more Lindy Hop than Jive" Week 2 dance, removing the illegal lift (which was done rather cheekily; they started to do it, then he looked at the judges and grinned...but didn't lift) and the Lindy aspects, making it a TRUE Jive, earning him a 2nd place score. His salsa looked (to me) a tad stiff and slow, but the judges loved it.
The musical guests for the Finals was country group Lady Antebellum, who were fabulous! They performed 2 songs: a new one off their latest album, and their huge mega-hit "Need You Now".
The show opened with the Pros dancing, then the eliminated contestants came out dancing, followed by the Final 3. While J.R. and Rob were practicing their Instant Samba, each of the elminiateds came out, one-by-one. Ron/Metta and Elizabetta simply revisited one of their dances. Kristin danced a really fun Jive with Mark. Chynna got to do her infamous "Mission: Impossible" Tango (the one where she totally blanked out) over again, and she was FABULOUS!!! If she had danced like that originally, she would NOT have gotten eliminated as soon as she did! Carson danced to Madonna's "Vogue" with Anna, Val and a few others; fun, but he still can't dance. Chaz danced a Freestyle with Lacey & Lacey's dad to a song that had lines like, "I like 'em chunky; I like 'em big...", an obvious tweak to the judges' comments. Nancy & Tristan once again looked on "the Bright Side of Life" and had a ball. David revisited his Broadway Night "Grease" routine, only backed by the Troupe...then proceeded to "steal" the Mirror Ball Trophy! Hope & Maks revisited their Week 8 quickstep.
Eventually, the results were announced: The Season 13 Champion is...
