George Washington sends Daniel and Yadkin into "Ken-Tuck-E," the "dark and bloody" hunting ground of four Native American nations, to find a site for a fort. Once they arrive, they encounter representatives of two of those four nations -- Shawnee warriors chasing a lone Cherokee warrior. Daniel helps drive the Shawnee away, and the grateful Cherokee, Mingo, returns the favor by showing Daniel and Yad an ideal location to build their fort. Yad returns east while Daniel remains with Mingo to explore the country.moreless

    I like the episode in spite of the fact that I don't envision George Washington being very concerned at all about Kentucky. This was a classic series and it kindled in me an interest in Daniel Boone. That led to my realizing how far the series strayed from the real Daniel Boone. This episode is not an exception to that, although it does blend real-life characters such as Blackfish and George Washington into a fictitious story. The real story of Boone settling Kentucky was that Boone had been told of it by John Filson. Boone explored Kentucky with Filson, came back, and led a group of settlers that included his family into Kentucky where they settled Boonesborough at a spot along the Kentucky River. Becky Boone and their daughter Jemima were the first two white women to cross the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky.

    This episode does have what the series really delivered on: Plenty of action, a good (although fictitious) story, and good acting. This series also really came through in showing that Indians weren't always the bad guys. They took a step that I don't think any other series in that era took: They made the Indians intelligent. That shows in this Episode, especially with Blackfish.moreless

    This episode is the pilot for the 1964-70 NBC frontier drama Daniel Boone. The storyline concerns George Washington sending Daniel and his oafish friend, Yadkin, on a mission to the Kentucky wilderness in order to survey the area and discover a good location for a fort for the Patriot cause to be built on the frontier. While there, Daniel and Yadkin fight off hostile Indians and befriend an Oxford educated Cherokee named Mingo. Then its wagons ho and the building of a colony in Boonesborough.

    As for the quality of the episode itself, it's not bad. Nor is it good. The show didn't hit the ground running in this episode but not to worry. Subsequent episodes would prove much better. The problems here are twofold. One, the episode is in black and white. Outdoor teleplays set should be colorized not filmed in black and white. It's okay for a crime drama like The Untouchables to be filmed in black and white but a show set primarily outdoors does not have itself done justice if shot in black and white. Having watched both color and non-color episodes in the TV Land marathon of Daniel Boone on August 26-28 I can say that the color episodes held up much better.

    Next we get to the second problem of this episode--that of Albert Salmi. Though Salmi was a fine Method actor from New York he didn't really fit on the show because he had no chemistry with the rest of the cast and he wasn't very believable as a backwoodsman. He looked and acted a like a New York actor bumbling, stumbling, and fumbling his way through a role instead of becoming the character he was supposed to be playing. Though for you Albert Salmi fans I will say it was mostly a case of a good actor being a poor fit for a show than any lack of talent or effort on Salmi's part. I think Salmi himself realized he was out of place on Daniel Boone and that's why he departed the show after one season. Nevertheless, despite its flaws, this pilot episode is still worth checking out once the show is released on DVD. Watchable not memorable would be my final words.moreless
