The Tamarack Massacre Affair is a well-written episode from season two of the frontier drama, Daniel Boone. The plot concerns a British scheme to provoke a war between the Shawnee and the Kentucky settlers loyal to the cause of American liberty. How do they plan on doing this? By faking an Indian massacre. Their instrument: the crafty and scheming Madeleine Lorne, sister of a British officer.

Dina Merrill, as Madeleine Lorne, gives one of the best performances of the series by a female guest star. It's unusual too in that the series for the most part, like other shows of its era, concentrated on male characters. Many times the females were only used as window dressing.

The only thing that prevents me from giving this episode a 10 is the performance of Robert Lansing as a stereotypical stubborn Continental Army officer. Lansing never had much range as an actor and if you close your eyes you can almost swear he's back at the 87th Precinct playing a police detective. Still, Lansing's subpar but tolerable performance only lowers the grade a little and The Tamarack Massacre is well worth watching should TV Land decide to air it again.moreless
