"Perfect"
While Technus plans to beam himself to a computer in space to control every computer in the world, he keeps Danny busy by pushing him and Valerie Gray closer together. Tucker and Sam notice the fishiness and try to point it out to Danny, but he laughs it off. He discovers they’re right when Technus shows up to fight him wearing Valerie’s suit. Danny then ends up increasing her hatred of Danny Phantom by destroying it. Concerned at Valerie liking his human half but hating his ghost half, he still wants to go steady with her. Both of them end up at Axion while Technus reaches the computer, with Technus giving Valerie a new-and-improved suit. Danny goes after Technus, and Valerie goes after Danny.
Considering that the three episodes we’ve seen prior to this where Technus was the main villain weren’t that great, I had doubts, coupled with the fact that it was Friday the 13th. I really looked forward to this one. The last episode that was focused on romance was LiL, and that was a very disappointing episode.
First, let me say this. If FWD is only a sample of what we’ll receive of Danny Phantom in 2006, then we are in for one heck of a year!
The opener was very well done. I wasn’t expecting Star and Valerie to actually be friends, and I was a little confused since Star was originally Paulina’s satellite. But I ignored that without much trouble. I enjoyed that the four of them seemed to have a grudge against at least one of them, and especially Sam and Valerie getting up in each other’s face. Tucker was hilarious at that point. *Sighs* I actually hope he’ll find a girl who likes him one of these days. Danny’s fight with Technus there was pretty cool to start things off, and I enjoyed the post-fight words with Danny, Valerie, Sam, and Technus. That helped set the tone as well.
I’m a D/S fan, but I don’t find D/V to be that bad. The musical montage that first appeared in LiL could have definitely thrown things off, but not here. Any romance we saw here was done in a very strictly realistic way. Except for the carnival tickets and the lights, but that was all Technus’s doing, so no problem. I can’t really relate, since I’ve never really had any romantic interaction with anybody. :( But I could still tell it seemed realistic. I never expected Danny to have any romance with someone who was just in the background until the tenth episode, but that’s one reason why I love this show so much. It’s how the writers can put in twists and turns around every corner and keep things interesting.
In a way, this romance works in terms of American Dragon: Jake Long, but this seems far more natural, and not nearly as undeveloped. Valerie definitely doesn’t strike me as overly vengeful and overly cruel. She seems to think what she does is good. She’s a bit misunderstood, but she obviously wants to get rid of evil ghosts as much as Danny does, not merely to get revenge on them for something that was an accident. Oh, and I thought it was AWESOME when she fought with Technus using that branch. Tucker’s quote to go with that was very funny. As for her new suit…unbelievable. It looks so much sharper and more dangerous. I was really in awe.
I had to feel quite a bit of pity for Danny in this episode. His mind was obviously jumbled with complications involving him, Valerie, and Technus, and he seemed very stressed by it. But he found support in Tucker and Sam (extremely grudgingly from her) and stayed focused. That helped him when fighting Technus. I thought the gag with him being clueless was hysterical. I mean, come on! Just about everybody in the UNIVERSE know that Sam really likes Danny…except Danny! It’s really annoying, yet really fun all at the same time.
As for Sam herself, she was wonderful in this episode. I was waiting for signs of jealousy at seeing Danny and Valerie together. There were, but she seemed much more concerned for Danny’s safety, and I actually liked that more. It makes her seem a lot more mature. She seemed willing to allow it, even though she seemed to hate it. That made it really funny, especially when her eye twitched, she muttered when Valerie hugged her, and told Tucker to shut it.
Technus has also grown on me very much since the series began. While I still enjoy the old funny Technus who shouts out his plans and long-winded introduction, I think I prefer this new sinister Technus. His plan of joining Danny and Valerie to distract Danny was really smart, and even HE seems to notice that Sam likes Danny! lol
The humor in this episode was wonderful, and that further contributed to what a great episode this was. Again, the “clueless” gag was hilarious, and Jack and Danny’s “father-son chat” was fabulously funny. It was out there, but totally IC. And Sam’s name being engraved on the ring added to the humor, and Sam saying “Who the heck is Wes?” was the icing on the cake. Yet another person knows Sam likes Danny. Tucker had great laughs where he came up as well.
Perhaps what really made this episode great was the action. We’ve seen great stuff this season, but this was just…holy cow. The battle with Danny, Valerie, and Technus right after the mid-commercial was very long and very cool. The sky was a mix of green, and that seemed just right. And Danny’s last shots at the suit made it just…wow. Freaky with all three shots, and the one in the middle was…insane.
The final battle in space…two words. Breath-taking. Oh, and I loved Danny’s shout of, “I’m an astronaut!” Danny and Valerie were moving around in a very fluid motion, and the stars were perfect to go with it. Also, I really liked when Danny blasted Valerie backward, and then got that really intense look in his eyes. And it was really good thinking to send the jetpack into the satellite, and to ride back invisible on Valerie’s jetsled.
The last scene was very emotional and heart-warming. For a wild moment, I seriously thought that Danny and Valerie would hook up. But this is better, IMO. I found it very mature of Valerie to “break up” with him to protect him from danger. Reminds me of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The kiss on the cheek was nice as well. And Danny looking sorrow after that was very touching, along with Valerie. I really felt sorry for both of them, Danny moreso, even though this is what I prefer. And I really liked how Sam comforted him like she did. And now she has the ring! I smell future storyline! Other future plots open up as well. Vlad is in charge of Axion Labs? Oh boy.
This wasn’t a perfect episode. But very very little was wrong with it, and I actually can’t think of any at the moment. Maybe just that I’m more of a D/S fan, and I would’ve liked a bit more of that. Also, whatever happened to Paulina? Could Danny possibly be over her? We’ll wait and see.
This episode took a LOT of thinking before I could give it a rating. I thought of 9.8/10 last night, and then 10.3/10 earlier today, but now I’ve decided.
10.6/10! Third best ever! Boy, I've had a lot to talk about this one!
Way to go, Butch. Way to start off a brand new year.
