  • This episode was really cool even though all team Phantom weren't in it!

I thought this was a terrific episode! I really enjoyed seeing everyone in the Fenton family kicking butt a lot! It was also a really smart move for Danny to trick Vlad, and at the spurr of the moment! He's soooo smart! *fangirl sigh* Anyway, I also liked how dramatic everything was. Seeing the path through Danny's eyes was interesting, and awesome animation! Yet again, an awesome episode. I wish my mom could fight like Maddie does! Plus, I liked the ending- after everything they pretended nothing happened. Plus, I thought Jazz fighting ghosts adds an interesting twist to the storyline and to her character. I always thought she should support what her parents do the way Danny does. And I liked Danny finally beating Vlad without having to use blackmail. Two thumbs up! I loved this!
  • Vlad tries to convince Maddie and Danny to live with him at the same time that he's trying to kill Jack.

In my opinion, this is the best episode of season 1. As I've said before, I absolutely love Vlad and every episode he is in is one of my favorites. The parts I enjoyed are when Danny is criticizing Vlad and then Vlad retaliates by shooting ecto-beams at Danny, when Danny suggests that Vlad should get a cat or try internet dating, and the fight between Danny and Vlad which results in one of them getting their powers shorted out for three hours. Oh! Another part would have to be where Vlad and Danny say they'll give each other a five minute head start, but they really only give them a five second head start. There was no part in this episode that I didn't like.
  • This was the first episode of Danny Phantom I saw.

Maternal Instict is my favorite episode of the season. Vlad is at his best here, and the episode is full of awesome action. When Danny and his mother attemtp to go to on a bonding trip, they get forced onto Vlad's house. Vlad has created creature ghosts who chase after Danny, and Danny and his mother go back to Vlad for help. They must find a way to get out of his place and back home. I liked this episode because it shows that there is still strong emotion between Danny and his mother. Best of season 1, it definitely is.

i liked this episode, although i like any episode with vlad in it. danny training at the begining was fun to watch, i also liked the whole dalv thing being vlad spelled backwards, i cant beleive i didnt catch that this show does that kind of stuff all the time. jack was funny when he answered the door to a ghost and didnt relize, he really is a idoit. i just really love vlad, he is a great villan, he makes it on my really cool villians list, which is encredibly short. any way dannys mom kicked but though i agreed with danny how could she not have a cell phone. danny with out his powers is really wimpy and i didnt like that, i mean he should have been scared but he was just to helpless and that annoyed me, he really needs to start thinking about fixing that.
  • Vlad Plamius lures Maddie and Danny to his retreat while he sends his minons to kill Jack. The Fentons will have to bond closer than ever to beat Plasmius.

Maddie finds a helacopter and she and Danny leave.Danny tells Maddie how much he loves her. They come home but Jack and Jazz promise not to tell them about the ghost attack.

This is a great episode the Fentons bound with each other and we get to see some character development in Jack,Maddie,Jazz, and a little for Danny.Vlad failed to get Maddie and wasn't as dangerous as he was in Bitter Reunions he was funny and still dangerous.I like how when Danny fights Vlad he has to out smart him and not just use his powers to try and over power him. This was episode that had enough action and comedy in it.
  • When Maddie is worried that she is loosing touch with Danny, she recieves a letter from Dalv Corperation saying she has been invited to a mother-son science symposium. But when they get stranded in the forest, they have to turn to Vlad for help

This is a very special episode. It is full of adventure, humor and special moments. It is very touching especially at the end when Danny and Maddie are flying home. It also includes some humorous moments of Jack showing Jazz the adventurous world of ghost-hunting and she actually like it. It doesn't seem out of place and is actually pretty funny.

This is my 2nd favorite episode of Danny Phantom, close behind The Ultimate Enemy. It taught me a lesson and I could relate to every single last message in the episode. It is a perfect episode for Mother's Day
  • Danny and Maddie end up at a cabin owned by Vlad in Colorado on their way to a symposium in Florida.

While Danny is planning to spend a weekend training with his powers, Maddie gets an invitation to a mother-son science symposium in Florida. Danny reluctantly goes along, but they somehow end up in Colorado! There, they run into Vlad Masters! He lets them stay at his cabin, but they leave a short while later after he asks them to stay there for good. But Vlad brings Danny back, where he uses a device to short-circuit his powers! He is left to run for it and hope Maddie can fight off the ghost animals Vlad sends out. Back home, more ghost animals have been sent by Vlad to attack Jack! Jazz jumps in to help out her father, somehow enjoying the experience.

I thought this episode was quite enjoyable and also gave me a somewhat sense of relief to the disappointing Lucky in Love which premiered a week before this.

The opening, while it had nothing to do with the plot, was very interesting and it showed that Danny really wants to improve with his powers as much as possible. The fact that Tucker and Sam were there surprised me a bit, because they hadn’t appeared in Bitter Reunions and considering the summary, it didn’t look like they would play a part. Anyway, it was way impressive to see Danny’s flight speed, and it was fun to see his overshadowing of Tucker (again). His blasting of the cardboard Jazz didn’t bother me; I thought it was quite funny. I can’t say I liked that he sort of nonchalantly phased through the walls, but I guess it was fine. And it was funny when Danny phased Tucker through the floor and Sam went, “Wow! It’s quiet in here!”

One thing I enjoyed was the mother/son as well as father/daughter bonding in this episode. Seeing Maddie fighting the ghost animals without trouble was very cool, and she didn’t have any cheesy hero type lines that threw it off like in PE. As for Jack, he was much better with his brand of ghost fighting than usual. Probably because Jazz was in danger, that caused him to excel. That’s also why he fought better than usual at the end of MDG. Seeing Jazz getting into the ghost fighting was very fun, and her wearing of Maddie’s jumpsuit was a nice touch. Despite what she says, she probably isn’t done with ghost fighting completely.

Danny was done quite well in this episode. As I said before, the fact that he wanted to train instead of doing anything else was very dedicated for him. Also, the fact that he was trying to duplicate, but only managed another head, was very funny, as well as when he tried to change back but ended up with one eye. Danny was IC by not wanting to go on the trip, as well as his remarks about Maddie not having a cell phone. And his remarks and overall spite towards Vlad were done very well, and that scene where they’re leaving and he tells Vlad to get a cat was hilarious. His comments when Maddie was pretending to flirt with Vlad were really funny as well, especially his remarks about what would happen from 12:00 to 12:02. And I’m sure he was feeling sick at seeing Maddie pretending to be all sweet with Vlad, which is why his “I’ll be over there, barfing,” line made sense.

As for Vlad, he was still the sinister guy that he was in BR, although I didn’t like him quite as much here. I mean, that line he had with Maddie about dumping Jack and staying with him? You don’t say that to a married woman! He definitely got what he deserved when Maddie just stormed out like that, which I enjoyed whole-heartedly. Also, his disguising of his name as a company was pretty sneaky. I didn’t figure that out right away. And the fact that he sent his animals after Danny pretending to be bad at math was quite sly and evil, and it was pretty sweet to see Danny return the favor at the end. But how exactly has he seen Danny’s grades? His scene with Danny before his powers came back seemed too quick. Danny just says he wants to stay with him, and he instantly falls for it and Danny gets the Specter Deflector on him? Is he that gullible?

And the final fight between Danny and Vlad, while I liked that Danny was able to win, it was still done too easily. I give it some credit since Vlad’s strength was limited, but getting the belt on him was too easy as well. He only managed one hit before a few punches and a soft blow knocks him down. But the calling of his animals was quite sinister, a bit reminiscent of SoG. And Danny’s quick thinking of pointing out their pelts was good.

There are only a couple things I didn’t like. The backwash joke kind of bored me a bit, as well as Jack not recognizing the ghost delivering the invitation. It seemed OOC for him. And I wasn’t that fond of Maddie not finding a phone, but finding tractors, a helicopter, etc. and disregarding them was FOP-ish.

But it failed to affect how much I liked this episode that much. There was a lot of humor and family bonding in this episode, and I give MI a 9.5/10. It ranks as my fifth favorite of all time.

In this episode, you first see Danny training in his parents lab, but meanwhlie, Maddie is feeling depressed that She and Danny don't spend much time together, when Jack tells her that there's an invite to a mother-son seminar she's as happy as could be. Danny, however, is not. While on the way to the seminar, they mysteriously end up in Colorado than the seminar in Florida. They then meet Vlad Masters, Danny's archenemy! Danny suddenly figures out that the invite was nothing more than a hoax orchastrated by Vlad! Later, Danny gets his ghost powers short-circuted by Vlad, and then Danny and Maddie get attacked by a horde of ghost animals, meanwhile Jazz and Jack are Having the same problems! With Danny's powers temporarily gone, he is powerless, but gets to witnss Maddie's excellent ghost-fighting skills. When they think of a way back home, they have to ask Vlad for help ! Meanwhile, Vlad and Danny get into a fight, Danny manages to put a device called a specter-deflector on Vlad to weaken him, but unfourtunately Vlad is still a lot stronger. But Danny manages to defeat Vlad in the end. When Maddie and Danny get home , Thereseems to be nothing out of the ordinary... or IS there? This is one of the best episodes and I hope you enjoy it !

While other cartoon Mothers' Day specials may come across as sappy and cheesy, Danny Phantom does it right! Maddie is invited to a science symposium in Florida and drags Danny along, hoping to reconnect with him. Little do they know, there is no symposium! It is just another plot by Vlad Plasmius to force Maddie to marry him. Insulted by Vlad's advances, Maddie opts to spend the night in the forest, where she and Danny are hunted by ghosts. Danny realizes that his mother isn't so bad after all, but will Maddie give in to Vlad to save Danny? Watch and find out!

All I can say is that vlad is getting dumber by the episode. this is because now he let mattie know that he hates jack fenton. he also has gotten cockier since bitter reunions. and his so called evil plan wasn't as good as the one he had on bitter reunions. I don't know what you other people might be thinking about vlad masters but I think he is getting worse and worse at making evil plans. He also is a very obvious copycat. Maybe if vlad made his own inventions instead of copying the fentons inventions he would get Jack eventually.

This episode may not have been the most action packed, but it was deffinetly comical. In a lot of the fan fiction stories I have read the make referance to the cat joke, and if you haven't seen this episode then you will not get the joke. In this episode Danny likes to make fun of Vlads so called lonlyness, the jokes were corny but they were funny to me anyway. This episode isn't one of my favories but it is good. I think without the humar part of this episode it would have been very daul, but it had the humar so it wasn't daul!

At the begining Danny is practicing his ghost techniques with Sam and Tucker. Then he gets draged to a science symposium in Florida by his mom. Maddie wanted to spend more time with Danny and thought this would be the great oppertunity. That leaves Jazz at home "domed to special alone time with dad." Jazz and Jack end up fighting ghosts that come into their house. Meanwhile Maddie and Danny are not headed to Florida but to Wisconcent. There plan crashes and they end up at vlads house. Vlads plan is to get Maddie and Daniel to stay with him while the ghosts he created went and killed Jack. Vlad shorts out Danny's powers for a while and his mom stops the ghosts that are attacking Danny. Danny fights Vlad later while his mom is looking for a way to leave. Danny relizes Vlad really is bad and that his mom is not half bad. Maddie relizes that Vlad is no good. Jazz and Jack relize they can make a good team and Jazz was actually O.K. with the special alone time with her dad. Jazz and Jack do not tell Maddie and Danny about fighting ghosts and Maddie and Danny don't tell them about the ghost trouble at Vlads.
  • Danny's mom wants to spend more time with him so she decides to take him with her to a convention, however there was no convention and this scheme was plotted by Vlad Plasmius. Danny and Maddie are trapped in the woods and must find a way out.

Finally Vlad is back. I think he should've behaved more like an evil villain than he did in this ep. He didn't look too threatening this time, but his ghoulish animal creations made up for it. The action could've been better. Maddie's fight with the animals didn't seem as exciting as when it began. In other places, Jazz is finally a true Fenton. Those scenes were a little more intense than at the woods. At least there were a lot of action scenes. The puns and catch phrases are still working. Still a funny show. I think the next episode with vlad should have him seem more evil.

Why is Danny so against his mother and going on a little trip with her. I don't understand. Just because he wante dto practice his ghost powers does that mean he has to be a party pooper. But in the end he ends up having fun which made me happy that he was happy in the end. A good episode.
  • Episode 17 - Maternal Instinct - My review

    "Perfect"
The episode starts with Danny training his ghost moves to become a better ghost fighter. Maddie remembers the days when Danny was young and they used to be close. She feels like Danny is slipping away from her. Just then, a special delivery letter arrives for them (from a ghost, but Jack doesn’t notice that at the door). Maddie reads the letter and says it’s just what the doctor ordered for her and Danny. While Danny is trying to replicate himself, and succeeds only in duplicating his head, Maddie comes to the lab and tells him that they are going to a mother-son Science Symposium in Florida. Danny wanted to practice his ghost features without any interruptions during the weekend and gets disheartened when he hears this news from his mom, and reluctantly agrees. Before they leave, Jack tells Maddie to wear the Fenton-Specter-Deflector.

Maddie is really excited about her trip to the Symposium, especially since the people of ‘DALV’ gave them their own private jet to go there. However, things take a wrong turn when the pilot jumps off the plane after announcing it to Danny and Maddie. Danny tries to save this mother, but because of the Deflector she’s wearing around her, he cant. So they take parachutes and jump down, and after a few minutes, run right into Vlad Masters’ house! Vlad reveals his true feelings to Maddie and she leaves his resort frustrated. Vlad gets angry and says this is not the end. Danny and Maddie decide to camp out in the woods, and Danny is still angry at her for ruining his weekend.

Danny wakes up to find a ghost bear in the woods, and it takes him to Vlad. Vlad uses a device called the ‘Plasmius-Maximus’ to temporarily remove Danny’s powers for a few hours and makes the animals charge after him. Now completely powerless, Danny runs through the woods to get away from the ghost animals, when his mother comes to his rescue! They decide that they must go back to Vlad’s place because he has the transportation and communication for them to call for help. Will Danny be able to fight Vlad again to protect his mother, even though he has no powers?

I loved this episode because it is just so different from the others. I mean, Jazz fighting ghosts? Danny powerless while his mother’s in action protecting him? Jazz and Jack actually getting along? Who would have thought right? This episode had a lot of humor, action, and a soft touch to it too. Furthermore, similar to the episode ‘Bitter Reunions’, Danny uses his wit to get back at Vlad instead of his powers, making us more intrigued as to whether Danny would actually be able to defeat Vlad in a match by just using his powers. I guess we will have to wait for another episode for that.
  • Maddie decides to bring Danny along on a mother-son seminar, not knowing that it's a ploy devised by Vlad Plasmius. With Vlad trying to bring an unpowered Danny to his side and attempting to kill Jack and Jazz at home, it's going to be a wild weekend.

This episode was important to the series in the way it showed how far Vlad is willing to go to get what he wants. If Danny won't join him, he's willing to kill him, Jack and unintentionally, Jazz, to keep his secret safe and get Maddie. I've read on several reviews that people think that Vlad was too easily fooled by Danny's 'conversion.' But you have to consider that Vlad is so twisted, he really believes that after all he's done, Maddie and Danny will leave Jack and come to him.

But enough about Vlad's lack of conscience, there was a fair amount of evolution in the characters. Though Sam and Tucker, like in BR, were pushed aside, they weren't really needed except for the intro. Jazz showed her flare for ghost-fighting, much to her dismay, which will come in handy in later, more critical episodes like TUE.

And I can understand Maddie and Danny becoming distant, after all, with her and Jack working on gadgets, and Jazz working on her schoolwork and extracurriculars, Danny would need to become pretty independent, as we've seen.

My brothers and I got a kick out of the tiny mouse ghost being squashed. "I WILL DESTROY YOU!" We've named him Squeaker, for obvious reasons.

Overall, pretty good episode, the animation was good, the voice work was good with everyone sounding in character. It was done pretty well.
  • Maddie is invited to a science symposium in Florida and takes Danny along, hoping for a chance to do some mother/son bonding along the way. What they don't know is that the trip is a hoax, orchestrated by Vlad Masters a.k.a. Vlad Plasmius, Danny's arch en

This episode was partly why I got into this series in the first place. I really enjoyed the development of Maddie, Vlad, and Jazz in this episode. Also, Danny's chase sequence culminating in the sudden appearance of the gopher bent on world domination exemplified the *not* over the top, non-sequitur-esque type of humor that really makes this show cute and sincerely enjoyable--most unlike the mind-numbing drivel that Nick usually puts on these days. I also loved Vlad's development this episode. Despite what others have said, I didn't see him acting out of character at all. He was perfect.
  • A different side of everybody that we've never seen before!

In this episode, Danny and Maddie get invited to a science convention sponsored by the DALV group, but they don't know that it's a trap made by none other than Vlad Masters A.K.A. Vlad Plasmius. While Jack and Jazz try to live with each other for the weekend without Jazz going crazy!

In one word I can describe this episode "AWSOME"! The way there was parental bonding, Jack with Jazz and Maddie with Danny!

And a total different side to all of them, espically Jazz and Maddie, Jazz acting like a ghost hunter and wearing her mom's jumpsuit was totally different! And Maddie was like, well, a regular mom! Which is odd for her! But it was so cute watching them bond like that!

The ending was really cute when Danny gave his mom a kiss on the cheek and at the beginning that picture where Danny and Maddie were I guess at the park and Maddie is hugging Danny and he looks all happy! *everyone goes awwwww*

Now what we need to see, is see that from Jack!

Now to that part of the episode! I thought it was cool how Jazz wore one of Maddie's jumpsuits and how she got all ghost hunting crazy!
  • Another side to the arch-foe? Anyting with Vlad is priceless. Plus, familial bonding.

    "Superb"
Our second episode with the main bad guy, Vlad Master/Plasmius who is also a halfa, showcases Vlad very well. He may seem out of character at first glance, but thinking about it again, what do we have to base this on? One episode? This show just added more depth to him.

In an obvious yet successful plot, Vlad lures Maddie and Danny to his house and tries to convince them both to stay and disown Jack. Maddie reacts to his profession of love by storming out, which only lights Vlad's fuse.

There was amazing interaction between Vlad and Danny, I absolutely love their playful banter. Vlad's efforts to get Danny to join him are repeatedly fruitless, as are his tries to get Maddie to love him. Underneath it all he's simply blinded by loss and rage, and he's just a broken man in his forties. A family is really all he wants, and this is evident in this episode.

Another thing to mention is Danny and Maddie's interaction together. Danny's receding from his mother because of the usual hormones, but even more so because of his ghost powers ("Stop touching me!"). Eventually their bond is restored, and they show their love through backwash ^_^

Jazz and Jack get their first same-page time, too, and Jazz yet again is dragged into the ghost scene (see MBK). She just can't resist forever, and this ep shopws that she probably won't. ^_^

I give it a 9.4; one of my favorite episodes, but could have done better in some areas as always (I'm just a pessimist...)

All Danny wanted to do was concentrate on improving hsi powers but his mom had to drag him off on some mother/son outting, while they had there problems Jack and Jazz had their, in the end each bonding with their respective parent. Vlad as always was very funny, when all of his expermints turned on him, priceless.

"Maternal Instincts" finds Maddie feeling that she and Danny are drifing apart, while Danny prepares for a full weekend of ghost-battle practice. At a strange invitation, Maddie drags Danny off for a weekend of mother-son bonding in Florida while Jack and Jazz hold off mysterious ghost attacks. One thing to say about this episode...

    It...was...fantastic!

Danny's training sequence at the beginning was very nicely done, and a very good reflection how much he's learned and how much he's still learning. Meeting ghosts like Plasmius and learning what they can do seems to be striving him to work on improving his own abilities. That was really well done. And hitting Jazz after taking out the ghosts; they may have bonded, but Danny still doesn't know she knows his secret, and she can still be a pain. Very funny touch.

I loved all the film references in this episode; I caught some from Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and "The Most Dangerous Game." All those mutant animals were interesting. Makes one wonder where all those animal-ghosts from "Fright Night" and 13 came from... ;)

I really liked all the family bonding in this one. The stuff with Danny and Maddie was extremely touching. Usually in those types of scenes, TV shows today trip over themselves with horrible delivery and even worse dialogue. But this...that was amazing. I actually felt like crying a bit. On the flip side, Jack and Jazz's sequences were not only touching, they were *hilarious!* Good to see Jack back to full form after acting a bit too stupid in "Public Enemies" (one of that episode's only faults, but that's for another review).

Vlad...wonderful to see him back again, and his cabin was sweet! That was quite a crafty plan he had there, and I love his mocking attitude towards his foes. I thought that the way he acted when Danny and Maddie seemed to come over to his side would bug me, but I actually liked it. He's so used to getting his way, and things had been going so well, it seemed to make sense.

The first time I watched the episode, it seemed like Vlad actually wanted to kill Danny as well as Jack. That seemed to make sense, given that he had just failed. However, watching it again and paying attention to the "not a moment too soon" line, it appears to me that the entire chase through the forest caused by Vlad's pets was his back-up plan to force Maddie and Danny to head back to his place, which seems even more like him than my original assumption. It was only when Danny had defeated him that he wanted him dead, which also made sense. They seemed more at odds with each other as opposed to Vlad toying with Danny, which worked well. Though I must admit, I hope the Slade/Robin vibe between him and Danny returns come "The Million Dollar Ghost."

I found it very interesting that Sam and Tuck were again very minor or absent for this, the second Vlad ep. I wonder if that'll continue with his appearances; Sam and Tuck never encounter him, only hear about him from Danny.

I do have a few minor things with this ep. The animation at times seemed a bit choppy and a few shots of Vlad weren't too well-drawn. While I liked him for the most part and that bit when things were going well for him didn't bug me, I thought Vlad was a bit too much of a clown, particularly right at the end. BR and SoG made him seem much more of a menacing-type villain than this. And the pace felt a *bit* off at some places.

But I really feel good about this ep, and I enjoyed it tremendously. Again, a full 10/10.
