"Superb"
The third episode of the series but the second one aired, "Parental Bonding" finds Danny getting ready for the upcoming school dance. He manages to get a date with his crush, pretty and popular Paulina. But he accidentally gives her an ghost-amulet that fell into his backpack during a battle - and every time Paulina gets angry, the amulet turns her into a dragon.
PB was actually the episode that really got me hooked on the series. I thought MM was OK, but the first episode of a show is rarely my favourite one. If I like it enough I'll tune in again, and it's the later episodes that get me. PB and OoaK did that for me, but for some reason, PB especially got me in.
It's kind of wierd that I would like PB as much as I do, because there's some things about this episode that show up in other ones that I don't like. The school dance storyline is a cliched high school plot, and AotKGS and SI, which also have those kinds of stories, are low on my list. But the thing about PB is that, IMO, the presentation of the plot was much better. The moments where things could go wrong were handled more subtly and carefully, and the dance storyline was balanced out with the jokes and side plots in a much more even way than those other two episodes I mentioned. I think that's why I like PB so much.
The thing about the dance storyline in this episode is that the moral isn't bashed over our heads IMO. In AotKGS and especially SI, the entire flow of the episode and everything that was going on seemed to shut down just so they could get in a little sermon on what was learned. Danny doesn't exactly catch on that Paulina's a shallow, stuck-up witch, but when the moral comes out (always from Sam in this episode), it's short, sweet, and to the point. Things don't shut down gears just so they can have Sam state the obvious. It's part of the flow of the episode. "Girls like her are a dime a dozen." Short, sweet, and to the point. "You can't judge a book by its cover." Short, sweet, and to the point. Her insult to Paulina - part of a sub-plot, and went with the flow. "Looks are decieving, Danny." Short, sweet, and to the point. And then, at the end, when you expect the long sermon after Tucker asks where Paulina is, Sam looks like she's about to say something - and then completely blows off brining the issue up again. The dance is almost over, the trio's alone, so they might as well just get in some fun before the night is over. That is a much better handling of a typical high school plot than what's usually on Nickelodeon, and I really like that Butch did PB like this.
And again, IMO, this episode had a better sense of when to balance the high school plot out with other stuff. Uncovering the mystery of the ghost-dragon and its relation to the amulet was one nice sub-plot. It actually felt like a comic-book mystery during those scenes. That storyline in the episode got just the right amount of focus and led to some cool-looking animation and some funny gags. And I love dragons!
I think that PB might be the only episode where the title has nothing to do with the main plot of the episode. Danny doesn't bond with either of his parents. He overshadows his dad to keep from getting in trouble (albeit for something that wasn't really his fault), gets him and his mom stuck as the chaperones, and keeps overshadowing his dad to keep the story up. That was another balancer and side story, and it led to some hilarious scenes.
Sam and Paulina's conflict was another balancer, though one that had more correlation to the main plot. About their interaction and how it relates to Danny...I like the idea of D/S. I will defend FtF day and night. And I think the dance at the end of this episode was foreshadowing to some degree. But (prepare for a shock here, folks)...I don't think that there was anything romantic about D and S's relationship in this episode. There was nothing in the way of denial when Sam said that Danny wasn't her boyfriend IMO. She got upset when Danny said he had trouble talking to cute girls and he'd never had trouble talking to her, and that could also have been foreshadowing, but I don't think there was any romance in this episode between Danny and Sam. Sam actually does apologise to Paulina at one point for being so over-protective of Danny as a best friend. IMO, Sam thought Paulina was a bad date for Danny - and she is. That's where the conflic came from here. But I don't think that there was anything awkward or semi-romantic about their relationship until SoG. Jealousy showed up in LiL, definately - but here, I think it was just concern for a friend. Though the dance at the end was cute.
Paulina herself is a character that serves a purpose on the show as a foil for the leads and should be kept. But I agree with Sam's assertion that she is a shallow little witch, and I don't much care for her.
Tucker's lack of ability to get a date - funny stuff, and another balancer. This episode is why I don't think his hitting on Sam in MB was OOC. He hits on every girl in the school in this episode, and IMO, if he didn't know Sam, he'd hit on her. His quest for a date also introduces Valerie...and we've since seen how she fits into things.
Lancer's attempts to sound "hip" may not have been a story on their own, but they were drop-dead funny and I love those scenes every time I see 'em.
This is one of the episodes where, even though I don't give it a full 10/10, I can't really find anything I don't like about it. The plot is cliched, but again, I thought it was handled very subtly and cleverly and was balanced out plenty. So, I can't think of anything.
I really like PB and I think it did an excellent job and taking a cliched and potentially boring high school plot and handling it with enough originality, subtlely, and side plots to make it something special. I don't know if I'd like to see an episode as typically "high school" as this show up now in the series - Danny has much bigger problems to face - but as this was early in the series, I think it serves its purpose in getting the high school issues resolved and doing it very well. I give PB 9.5 out of 10
