"Pirate Radio" features a young pirate ghost named Youngblood and his skeleton crew attacking the FentonWorks home and robbing it of its ghost-shield. When they strike again at Casper High and all the adults in Amity Park both become enamoured with a strange song and set off for a cruise, Danny becomes suspicious. It appears that Ember has returned and allied herself with Youngblood. Their deal - if Youngblood can take the adults out, he can put them to work on the gym equipment to power his ship, and with the adults out of the way, Ember can take over the world!
I was worried about this episode. I thought it sounded very contrived, cartoonish, and OTT, and it had me worried.
Looking at it now...I won't say I liked it, but it definately wasn't as bad as I had been fearing.
I'll start with what I didn't like, just so I can get it out of the way. I *really* did not like the way some of the characters were portrayed in this episode. I had the most trouble with Sam. We've seen her to be the smart, clever member of the trio who takes problems, issues, and ghost threats seriously. She picked up on Skulker, she kept her head during FtF with Ember, she warned Danny about getting rid of the sword in FN...in all of the other episodes so far, she's been the one to stay focused on the problems, even when the boys aren't. That she would completely ignore all the warning signs in this episode about what the pirates were up to and how the song played into it just seemed completely OOC to me. I'd expect Tucker to act like that, and when he did I had no problem with it, but Sam...it seems like she'd pick up on the danger. Instead, she's worrying about the radio station. That really bothered me, especially since she even picks up on smaller worries that involve just the trio's personal problems (Danny's grades, Tucker's accepting himself, etc.). And then at the end, when she taps on the window and makes it clear that Danny messed with the equipment in the lab...she had to have seen that he was in trouble! She was right there! Sam is one of my favourite characters, and this ep doesn't change that, but IMO, it seemed like Sam and Tucker switched minds in this ep...except Tucker still seemed IC.
I liked Danny through most of this episode. His picking up on the warning signs seemed IC. He's not always the best at picking those up, but with big things like this, he can tell what's going on, and I liked how he did that. But his lines to Paulina when he became Danny Phantom..."You should make out with him (Fenton)?" "Consider Paulina 'Fenton?'" This seemed very cocky and too sleazy for him. Other than one line in DD in answer to one of Sam's comments, he was pretty shy around Paulina in DD, and in almost every other episode where he has to be in contact with her like this. His acting like this seemed really OOC. It seemed like he was hitting on her like Tucker would - only it wasn't funny and it was a bit more nasty IMO.
And, a purely personal issue here - I know Paulina has a purpose on the show, and I'd like to see her stay. But I just think she's been showing up way too much. I'm getting sick of her. Again, purely personal note here on character preference, but I think she should take a backseat for a while.
The reason why the description worried me was because the idea of all the adults being taken away and the entire adolescent populace rallying to the rescue seemed like a cliched, overly cartoonish plot. It sounded like "The Jimmy Neutron Movie" to me. Nothing against that show or that style of animation, but IMO, devices like that just don't cut it on DP. The way it was played out wasn't as bad as I was afraid of. Only Casper High students were invovled, and it wasn't as overblown as it sounded. But it didn't really have any real drive to it IMO. It just seemed like a sequence of events played out to get the story done. There was no real emotion involved. No one really got nervous over their parents' being captured, Danny did an OK job as the leader but he also didn't have any real drive IMO, and it just seemed kind of...empty. I don't know what really is missing or what, but I just didn't really feel any need to cheer the characters on, because it didn't feel like they were faced with anything.
And some of the jokes bugged me - mainly Maddie's outcry "AT LAST!" at the end. I'd rate that with Jack's comment that Jazz was his favourite as being overly mean-spirited IMO.
Now, for what I *did* like. I really liked the animation in this episode. The colour scheme was perfect, the attention to detail in that star-filled background in the beginning, andthe animation of the pirate ship were all incredible. And Ember's hair setting the whole ship ablaze at the end - breathtaking. I loved that shot. Kudos to all the animators!
And I liked Tucker being the one to sneak aboard the ship and shut off the shield. Nice way to keep him active. And I liked his setting it to trap Youngblood in at the end. A bit cruel, but very Tucker and quite frankly, I thought the brat could use it.
I was expecting to really have a dislike for Youngblood. And I found him to be an irritating little brat. But he did have some good comedic value. I liked the joke with him having to consult his parrot for the proper pirate lingo. Nice touch there.
Ember's return...like Spectra in DD, I was expecting Danny to have a bit more of a grudge against her, but she seemed alright in this episode. Very...Ember. And I liked that she abandoned Youngblood at the end when things went rough. Cruel, villainous, and mean-spirited, but it fit.
And I'm a huge fan of old, classic swashbucklers like "Captain Blood" and "The Sea Hawk," so having a battle on a pirate ship and some kind of mini-sword fight between Danny and Youngblood for a few moments was a lot of fun for me.
All and all...6/10. It's not my favourite, but I was really fearing this episode, so it's kind of a relief the way I ended up taking it in.
