Vlad is in the keep of Pariah Dark, the king of all ghosts. There, he plans to steal the Crown of Fire and the Ring of Rage, to make himself all-powerful. But he accidentally awakens the king after getting the ring. Pariah then sends his skeleton army to Amity Park to retrieve the ring, and to show no mercy to whoever stands in their way. Danny sees the army coming and tries to fight them off, with unexpected assistance from Vlad and Valerie. Also useful for him is Jack and Maddie’s new ecto-skeleton. It can improve his power total, but is also potentially fatal. Can he put Pariah back to sleep with the lives of everyone, even his enemies, at stake?
At the time, the commercials that I saw for this movie got me amped up for a new Danny Phantom like none other. But I was still forced to miss the first two minutes or so of this. I was on vacation and we were out, so…yeah.
I didn’t fully understand it at first, but I got a better insight after seeing the whole thing. And as for the movie, it was AWESOME! Loved it!
The opener was done very nicely. Here we finally see what Vlad had in mind for that Skeleton Key. It may have been foolish of him to open the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep, but he probably expected that Pariah had long since passed on, so no big deal. And I found it funny with his, “I’m a huge fan of your work!” And I enjoyed the Fright Knight being in employment of Pariah. Every king has to have a knight, apparently. And I liked Vlad’s little cry of “Help me…” when he was thrown through the portal.
There’s a lot to talk about for this TV movie, so I’ll start with Vlad. He was brilliant here. I always enjoy seeing enemies teaming up, and here was no different. But it was more than just teaming up to save themselves. Vlad also had his own plans up his sleeve, and he hardly even needed to lift a finger to get it. He keeps Jack clueless, he gets Maddie to lift her grudge against him, he messes around with Danny’s psyche pointing out their similarities, he makes Valerie an unwilling pawn, and he walks away with the Crown of Fire, the services of the Fright Knight, the ecto-skeleton, and he still has the Skeleton Key! I loved just about every minute Vlad appeared; it was very cool.
At this time, Pariah Dark is definitely the most powerful we’ve ever seen. I really enjoyed that there was a real legend behind the guy. Brian Cox did amazing as his voice-over; he made Pariah sound just like an old military general, ruling with an iron fist kind of guy, and that’s really cool. I also loved how all the ghosts abandoned the Ghost Zone due to him. Skulker, Ember, Walker, Spectra, Klemper, etc. All of them feared him enough to hide from him, and that’s pretty cool. It was cool to see them all back, by the way.
This was the point where I didn’t really despise Valerie anymore. I was expecting hers and Danny’s truce from LL to carry over, but I find this better. She didn’t automatically jump to barraging Danny with attacks the second she saw him. She really did seem willing to talk with him, although still a bit grudgingly. And as a regular girl, she grew on me there as well. I liked that she was trying to push Sam to “make a move.” And I found it really interesting that Valerie now likes Danny Fenton. And now her hatred of Danny Phantom seems quite more understandable, with her dad knowing about her hunting secret. Her interactions with Vlad were really cool as well. I had a good feeling from the commercial that Valerie would discover who was sending her the weapons, and that proved to be correct. I also like that Tucker now realizes how potentially dangerous Valerie can be; it seems more like a friend than how he was throughout SoG.
I loved seeing Danny, Sam, and Tucker together in the scenes they were. Both Sam and Tucker were concerned for Danny and how he was acting friendly towards Valerie, and I found it IC that he didn’t seem to be taking it seriously, yet still caring that they were worried. And while I like that Sam and Tucker actually get to see Vlad in this episode, they still don’t interact with him at all. I wonder when we’ll ever see that. I also enjoyed the two of them coming to Danny’s aid in the Specter Speeder, dropping off the ghosts to help him out. And I loved seeing the ongoing D/S conflict back again, with D/V now coming into the picture. There was a point up on the rooftop where I really did think that Sam was going to confess her feelings, but I still had a good feeling that nothing was going to be said. Oh, how I HATE when that happens! The rest was sweet, including when Sam pushed Danny onto the bed near the end.
Danny as an individual was great in RS. Aside from the way he acted towards Sam and Tucker was the way he acted with Dash. His getting back at Dash could have turned sour like in SI, but here I thought was done more believably and developed and not nearly as rushed. And he apologized at the end, which was nice. But I wished he wouldn’t have gotten that wedgie, even though it was probably expected. Also, his getting into the ecto-skeleton…man, Danny seems very willing to sacrifice a lot to save people. I actually wrote a paper in English class about what I thought was a hero and a point where he or she acted truly heroic. I picked Danny, and his situation here. He tried to convince Sam and Tucker that he would be okay, which was IC, but it was using the suit in the first place that was the best. Quite the brave hero he is, and that is made apparent as well in TUE. Also, I really like that 64% of Amity Park think he's a hero now, and that they know of him as Danny Phantom.
The action in this movie was just amazing. Every fight was definitely worth watching, even down to the short one Danny and Vlad had. Fluid, and the fights themselves were massive. The one with Danny, Vlad, and Valerie was incredible in the middle, as well as Danny’s blasting of the skeletons, alongside his enemies at the end. I could really get into it, especially with what was at stake throughout. Although I felt the final battle against Pariah could’ve been better, I LOVED seeing Danny duplicate himself, and where Danny’s energy waned down to 5% and nearly collapsed.
As for the music, Guy Moon outdoes himself once again! Fabulous all around; there was a majorly cool cinematic feel at it, and it did seem like you were watching a feature movie. The three bits I loved the most were just before the mid-point commercial where the town is being encased in the dome, where Danny transforms in the ecto-skeleton (awesome that the suit transformed with him!), and where the town flickers back to reality at the end. A salute to Mr. Moon.
There was also a lot of great humor in this episode. Danny’s pay-backs were done in a way that was funny, and also the gag with “Sorry, standard question” was very funny. I also liked Sam and Jazz getting Jack and Maddie out of the way so Danny could go ghost. On a side note, I did like Jazz’s telling Danny to be careful. Anyway, I also thought the ghosts’ interactions were funny and cool, especially when they were finding their new homes. On another side note, I liked Poindexter here a lot more than in SI. He does seem to take pity on those who get hurt. Also very good was the Box Ghost’s cry of “Never!” to Klemper.
Very little is wrong with this movie, but there were just a few nitpicks that bugged me. The biggest was when Danny melted Dash’s shoes with a ghost ray. I mean, seriously, how can ANYONE not notice that? It happens right out in the open! I also felt that the scene where everyone kept knocking each other down to get to the suit was silly. It sort of made me think, “Geez, does everyone want to risk being killed?” And that’s in a bad way. And as I mentioned, I would’ve loved more to see the final battle go on longer. And I also thought the gag with Nathan was a little unrealistic, but still funny, especially when Sam and Tucker called him at the very end.
Overall, a phenomenal movie. Excellent all around. Pre-movie questions are answered, and future storylines are set up. An epic, action-packed adventure, along with other brilliant storylines that keeps it interesting all the way through.
10.5/10! The fourth best ever! Great job to all!
