Danny Phantom

Season 1 Episode 10

Shades of Gray

Aired Friday 12:00 AM Sep 24, 2004 on Nickelodeon

  • Trivia

    • When Tucker says, "Valerie, wait up!" and falls on top of her, she doesn't seem to think much of him knowing she is a ghost hunter. Though in episodes to come, she doen't seem to want anyone to know she hunts ghosts.

    • When Danny shoots the Ecto Ball, The biggest form of the dog is the size of a tree. However, when he ties the dog to the tree in its biggest form, it is only about 3 quarters of the tree.

    • Danny said that every time Dash fails, he comes after him, but Dash said he got a "D" on the spelling test, and even though it's a bad grade, it is not technically failing, so Dash should not have went after Danny.

    • When Valerie said "because you are going down" to Danny, his arm is cut and his arms are in a 90% angle, after the commercials when Valerie said that, neither Danny's arms are cut and his arms are pointing down.

    • Right before the second commercials, Danny is floating, after them, he's standing on the ground.

  • Quotes

    • Sam: (After the ghost dog breaks loose from being leashed to the tree Sam and Tucker climbed on, therefore dragging them along with it) This is why I'm a cat person.

    • (Danny and the ghost dog crash through the Axion building and Danny falls to the floor in front of Valerie, Damon, and his boss)
Valerie: What are you? (Ghost dog spits green ectoplasmic saliva on Valerie)
Danny: I'll tell you what I'm not: covered in dog saliva. (Valerie screams)

    • Danny: Wow, ghost dogs are a lot more entertaining that regular dogs.
(Floats on to the sidewalk; squishing sound is heard)
Danny: (Sarcastically) Oh, great, invisible dog doo.

    • Danny: Great, my friend has a crush on a ghost hunter.
Sam: That's life, well, your life, anyway.

    • Valerie: (Reading the card on her box) "Heard about your recent ghost troubles. Hope this helps - Vlad." (Vlad, watching from the window, disappears, grinning) Don't know who you are, Vlad, but if this does what I think it does, I can't say that I care! (Ecto-gun accidentally fires)
      Damon: Valerie?!
      Valerie: I'm okay!

    • Danny: Sam, hide!
Sam: No time! (Pushes Danny into the bushes)
Valerie: (Valerie flies to where Danny is) No escaping me now, ghost boy! (Sees Danny and Sam kissing)
      Sam: Aaah! Do you mind?!
Valerie: Ah, gross, loser love! I always knew you two geeks would end up together. (Valerie flies off)
Sam: That sounded like Valerie. (Looks at Danny, who is smiling) Uh, Danny, you didn't think it was a real kiss, did you?
Danny: (Nervously) No! Why, did you? (Scene changes to school)
      Tucker: Wait. You guys kissed?
      Danny & Sam: No, it was a "fake-out make-out"!!
Tucker: But that still has the words, "make" and "out" in it, right? Maybe I should try that on... (Bumps into Valerie) Valerie! Hi! (To Danny & Sam; pushy) Okay, guys, see ya.

    • Valerie: (To Danny) So, Tucker tells me your parents hunt ghosts.
Danny: Did he now? What else did he tell you?

    • Danny: That lady isn't edible, and neither is anything she cooks.. and neither am I!
(Dog drops lunch lady and runs after Danny)
Lunch Lady: (With lunch food in her hands) It's still good, who wants seconds?

    • Danny: (To ghost dog who he's about to put in the portal) Okay, Cujo, in you go. (Gets ectoplasmic goo on himself) Bleh, that's it, I'm getting a hamster.

    • Sam: (To Danny, after seeing ghost dog attack cafeteria) You're not much of a dog catcher.
Danny: Yeah, no kidding. Who let the dogs in? (Sam stares) See, the song is "Who Let The Dogs Out," but I said "Who Let the Dogs In." (Sam continues staring) I'll be right back.
Sam: Bring some new jokes! (Danny goes ghost)

    • Tucker: (To Danny) Don't you trust me?
Danny: You, yes. It's your hormones I worry about it.

    • Danny: (About Tucker liking Valerie) Two-hundred seventy-nine girls in our school, and he's gotta have a crush on the one with the weapons and the grudge.

    • Sam: (About Danny & the ghost dog) A boy and his dog... somehow it's not supposed to be this freaky.

    • Valerie: (To Tucker) What are you doing here?
      Tucker: Um... hoping for a fake-out make-out?

    • Danny: (Picks up dog) Just like Dash, only with better breath.

  • Notes

    • When the ghost dog attacked the basketball game, Danny's Ghost Sense didn't go off, although it should have gone off.

    • This is the first time someone's name is used in the title (Gray), which is Valerie's last name.

    • Valerie is Danny Phantom's first enemy who is not really an evil villain; she is more of a vigilante or an anti-hero because in her mind, she thinks that she is the hero, while Danny Phantom is the enemy.

    • The Axion symbol is a picture of an atom.

    • Valerie is left-handed.

    • The "fake-out make-out" that Danny and Sam shared seems to foreshadow the romance between them in the next episode, "Fanning the Flames." In addition, the way how Dash, Danny, Kwan, and the rest of the gang saw the rock band, "Dumpty Humpty," seems to foreshadow them going to Ember's rock concert in "Fanning the Flames."

    • Tucker's PDA is capable of hacking into security cameras and disabling them

    • Major Human Debut(s): Damon Gray.

    • Apparently, Penelope Spectra's analysis of Valerie that she cares too much about material possessions was right, since Valerie wants to destroy Danny Phantom since he and the ghost dog unintentionally ruined her life. This was in the episode "My Brother's Keeper."

    • Nickname(s) Dash Gives Danny: Fen-tun.

    • The following are a list of Valerie's weapons and gadgets that are featured in this episode:
      1) Red skintight costume.
      2) Jet sled equipped with two red ectoplasmic laser beams and an autopilot system for when the rider is sensed to be absent.
      3) Ectogrenade Launcher.
      4) "Plasmius Thermos."
      5) Two ecto-guns.
      6) Rocket-powered roller skates.
      7) Shoulder ectoplasmic laser beams.
      8) Wrist ectoplasmic laser beam.
      9) Pink ghost-piercing razor-sharp discs.

    • The backpack where Valerie stores her ghost-hunting equipment in is purple, but when she is in her ghost hunting costume, the backpack she wears is brown.

    • Valerie is the third person in the series who thinks that Danny and Sam are a couple, the first person was Dash in "Mystery Meat" and the second person was Paulina in "Parental Bonding."

    • Look Hard: On the blackboard in the science classroom, there is a design of a hexane, a six carbon molecule.

    • When Valerie passes the popular table, it consists of Dash, Kwan, Paulina, a Caucasian boy, and an African-American girl.

    • Valerie considers Tucker, Danny, and Sam at the bottom of "the social grapevine."

    • Look Hard: Star (who plays a much larger role and officially "debuts" in "Lucky in Love") makes two cameos in this episode. The first cameo is in the crowd of kids that are running from the cafeteria because of the ghost dog: Star is one of those kids running. The second cameo is at the very beginning of the scene where Tucker says "Know where the ghost dog went," Star is seen at a lunch table.

    • Look Hard: Nathan (who officially "debuts" in "Reign Storm") makes two cameos. The first one is in the science class, although he is completely in blue (as in his face and his entire body). The second cameo is in the lunchroom, right before the ghost dog attacks.

    • Look Hard: There is a banner in the science classroom that says, "Science is fun."

    • Danny does not catch a ghost in the Fenton Thermos in this episode.

    • It is revealed that Dash is on the basketball team as well as the football team.

    • It is shown that Sam and Tucker also have motorized scooters, like Danny.

    • Apparently, to some people, Danny does not look like a ghost in ghost mode, since Damon's boss called him "a pasty face teenager" and Valerie did not know what he was until Tucker pointed it out to her.

    • Opener: Danny is running from Dash, who had just gotten a D on his spelling test. He bumps into Paulina and her drink ruins Valerie's new top. She makes Kwan go after Danny. Danny starts to run away again but then phases through the wall. Outside, he meets a cute little ghost dog, but then it grows into a huge and vicious ghost dog.

    • This is the first time that Valerie appears on the title screen.

    • It is hinted that if something is thrown or touches Danny's white belt, it will go through him (at the park scene, Sam threw a book to Danny, it touched his white belt, and went through him). This is later confirmed in "Lucky in Love" (Johnny 13's Shadow swings a lamp post at Danny's waist and it goes through) and "Pirate Radio" (Youngblood swings a sword at Danny's waist and it goes through).

    • The lunch lady who was secretly eating a hamburger in "Mystery Meat" appears again and speaks in this episode.

    • It seems that the Axion company killed all the security dogs, since Damon's boss said, "Those smelly guard dogs are a thing of the past," and the ghost dog was apparently one of those dogs, but his spirit roamed the Earth to look for his squeak toy.

    • According to Damon, Axion (the company that he works for), is the most secure facility in the United States, but it cannot stop ghosts from penetrating it.

    • This is the first time that Kwan has bullied Danny.

    • It is revealed that when Dash fails a test, he always come after Danny.

    • This is the first episode in which Kwan, Valerie, and Paulina appear in the opener.

    • Apparently, Vlad has taken the design of Jack's Fenton Thermos and made his own, which looks exactly like Jack's, except it has a red lining around it instead of green.

    • According to Danny, there are two-hundred seventy-nine girls in Casper High.

    • Running Gags: 1) Tucker and Sam thinking that Valerie's costume is awesome. 2) Valerie's ecto-gun going off by accident and she yells out, "I'm okay!"

    • Valerie has a new voice actor in this episode. She is now voiced by Cree Summer, instead of Grey Delisle, who played her voice in the previous episodes she appeared in ("Parental Bonding" & "My Brother's Keeper").

    • At the end of the episode, the Dumpty Humpty band plays the beat to the Danny Phantom theme song.

    • According to the address on Valerie's package, her address is 461 Elm Street, Elmerton.

    • Jazz, Maddie, Jack, and Mr. Lancer are all absent in this episode.

    • This episode apparently takes place in April, as seen on a calendar, approximately twenty-two minutes into the episode.

    • Valerie has previously appeared as a minor character in the episode "Parental Bonding." She was Tucker's date to the school dance before he went with Sam. Valerie also had a no dialogue cameo in "Attack of the Killer Garage Sale" and a short cameo in "My Brother's Keeper." She later makes a very small no dialogue cameo in the next episode, "Fanning the Flames."

    • Tucker gets his first girlfriend: Valerie.

    • Vlad Plasmius from "Bitter Reunions" makes two short speechless cameo appearances in this episode, but only to anonymously give Valerie her weapons.

    • In this episode, Sam and Danny's relationship "complicates" a little. They kiss, but they claim that it was just a "fake-out make-out." In "Memory Blank," it is confirmed that it was Danny who came up the term "fake-out make-out."

    • No new Fenton inventions were introduced in this episode.

    • Title Screen Caption: "In Spectre Scope."

    • Major Human Villain Debut(s): Valerie Gray - Danny's first 100% human nemesis. Once one of Casper High's popular kids, until ghosts ruined her life and popularity. She has devoted her life to hunting ghosts, unaware who is giving her the weapons to do so.

    • Main Villain(s): Valerie Gray.

  • Allusions

    • Tagline: In Spectrescope.

The tagline is a parody of classic cartoon, in which the title of the episode follows with "In Cinemascope" at the bottom.

    • Axion Labs: Appearance
Axion Labs appears to be based on Star Labs from the DC Comics, primarily in the Superman Comics.

    • Episode Title: Shades of Gray
The title of this episode seems to be pertaining to Valerie's character, as she is neither a "hero" or a "villain". Her morality status is not all black (evil) or all white (good), there are some "shades of gray."

    • Valerie & Danny: Fighting Scene
The scene where Valerie shoots rays from her ecto-gun in slow motion while jumping to the right, followed by Danny dodging each blast in slow motion seems to be taken from The Matrix.

    • Valerie: Anti-Hero Origin, Costume, & Weapons
The way how Valerie becomes one of Danny's archenemies is oddly similar to how Harry Osborn became the second Green Goblin, one of Spider-Man's archenemies. Valerie blames Danny Phantom for her sudden poverty and unpopularity, even though it was not directly his fault, which is very similar to how Harry blames Spider-Man for the cause of his father's (the original Green Goblin) death, which is also not directly Spider-Man's fault. Driven by her anger, Valerie receives strange weapons and gadgets to hunt down the bane of her unhappiness. Harry does nearly the same thing; the spirit of his father led him to a hidden room in their house filled with the Green Goblin weapons and gadgets and uses them to try to destroy Spider-Man. Valerie's skin-tight costume and jet sled is very similar to Harry's skin-tight costume and his "Goblin Glider." In addition, the razor discs that Valerie uses at one point in the episode is very similar to the "Razor Bats." Also, the way how Valerie's gloves glowed pink seems to suggest that she could shoot energy blasts from her fingers, just like the Green Goblin's.

    • Dash: Dumpty Humpty rocks! (Imitates guitar)
The rock band's name, "Dumpty Humpty," seems to be a play on the name of a Mother Goose nursery rhyme called "Humpty Dumpty." The fact that their symbol was a cracked egg strengthens this assumption. More Info

    • Danny & Sam: Fake-Out Make-Out
The fake-out make-out is similar to a scene in part 2 of the Justice League season 2 finale, "Starcrossed (2)." To cover their story of being married, Wonder Woman kisses Bruce Wayne.

    • Danny: (To ghost dog) Okay, Cujo, in you go.
Danny refers to the ghost dog as Cujo at one point in the episode. This is a reference to the book/movie by Stephen King entitled Cujo about a friendly St. Bernard who contracts rabies and lets loose a reign of terror upon a small town. Ironically, the actor who plays the boy who owns the dog is named Danny Pintauro.

    • Sam: Are you going to be more careful now that Valerie the Ghost Slayer is around?
The name Sam gives Valerie, "Valerie the Ghost Slayer," is a spoof on the title of the popular TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

    • Danny: Who let the dogs in?
This is a spoof of a song sung by The Baha Men, "Who Let The Dogs Out?." Danny even mentioned that the song was really titled "Who Let The Dogs Out?."

    • Book Title: Ghost Killing For Dimwits
One of the books that Valerie was holding was called Ghost Killing For Dimwits. This is an obvious spoof of the popular For Dummies books. The book even had the same design as the For Dummies books. More Info
