A ghost named the Ghost Writer uses his keyboard to make everyone in Amity Park speak in rhyme after Danny destroys his Christmas poem.

Danny hates Christmas because of his parents’ constant arguing over Santa Claus’s existence. Out of anger, he accidentally destroys the only copy of a Christmas poem written by a ghost named the Ghost Writer. Furious, the writer uses his quantum keyboard to change Danny’s world so that everybody speaks in rhyme, making it his new poem. He also causes much Christmas-related mayhem in Amity Park, leaving Danny to take the blame. Wanting to stop this himself, Danny journeys into the Ghost Zone to confront the writer.
When I saw this the first time, I wasn’t entirely impressed by it; I had just come off a less than perfect day, not to mention that it was a completely new thing, watching a new DP episode on a Tuesday night. But now I’ve realized that TFBC was a very good episode.
The opening gave us some surprises and answered a question or two that were left out prior to this. I didn’t expect Sam to be Jewish, nor that she acts so cheerful as the days get shorter. But that wasn’t OOC; she’s Goth, but she doesn’t have to act so sour the whole year, and that was an enjoyable surprise. Tucker’s mistletoe beret was very funny, very good for a laugh.
For a while, I wondered what could possibly make Danny despise Christmas. The reason why wasn’t that understandable to start with, even though it made sense, but it made more as the episode progressed. It’s fine to be upset for him if his parents argue over Santa’s existence every year; it’s bound to get really irritating after a while.
The Ghost Writer was a very interesting villain; he seemed to have a somewhat British attitude, and I wouldn’t call him evil exactly, perhaps selfish and vengeful. And I wish I had that keyboard of his, so the fanfics I write for DP come true on the show. :) And I found his gag with the orange very funny, although from watching Drake and Josh, he could’ve used “door hinge” to rhyme it with that.
When I knew that the people would be speaking in rhyme here, I was a little iffy. Things like that could be done horribly clichéd, over-peppy, and OTT. But this was not the case. Although there was rhyme, there was not a real change in the characters’ personality, and if there was, it was all the Ghost Writer’s fault.
I was at first concerned with Jazz’s, Sam’s, and Tucker’s behavior here, but then I remembered that the Ghost Writer had complete control over them so that was fine with me.
I wholeheartedly enjoyed seeing Danny’s foes back again, although I was hoping we would see Vlad; I wonder if he follows the ghost holiday truce as well. I always like seeing enemies setting aside differences and working together, and here was no exception.
The animation was gorgeous, and there was killer music to boot. It seems like ever since they brought in Kevin Petrilak to direct the episodes in Doctor’s Disorders, it’s gotten a heck of a lot better. The holiday style music was fabulous, as well as the melody when the toys were merging together. The fights were done well as well, especially the one with the trees. And I LOVED that he used the ghostly wail again; I wondered if they would bring that out for a while after TUE.
The moral of this was very good. It was actually something I hadn’t heard before, and in the case of a Christmas special, that is very hard to do. It’s one of the reasons why I love this series so much, the way it can take a plot that’s been done over and over, and put in a series of twists that make it original. But I wish that after Danny handed the gifts to his family, he would continue that kindness to his friends. Instead, he ponders over what he did wrong and says to do better next year.
There is not a lot I can point out that is negative, but I didn’t like the gross humor in the flashback with the dog. And WHY couldn’t there have been a D/S mistletoe moment? I SO wished for that. :( And I didn’t overall like it when Jazz said, “Such a dork,” when Danny spoke in rhyme at the end. It seemed a bit OOC.
But overall, a very nice episode. It’s the seventh best yet and it gets 9.2/10.
