Vlad is in the Ghost Zone, attempting to steal a key that will open any door. But he is blown out of the zone by a behemoth, and due to the ecto-filtrator in his portal not being changed, his portal explodes. He then plans to steal Jack’s portal, and to keep him busy, he offers a million dollar to the world’s best-known ghost hunters to eliminate Danny. Jack and Maddie arrive as well, leaving Jack to embarrass himself in front of everyone. To cheer him up, Danny turns himself in to him, but what no one knows is that Jack’s portal is on the verge of an explosion too!
We had a long wait for a new episode prior to this one. I wasn’t looking that forward to this one. It did sound like an interesting one, and it turned out to be a pretty good episode.
I found the opener to be very interesting and very luring to make you keep on watching. I wasn’t expecting Vlad to be the only one we saw during the time, but it was good for circumstance. I was glad to see there was more depth behind the portal exploding; a real mystery and a real reason for it. I thought Vlad was a little over-arrogant when fighting that behemoth, but that was IC for him. That picture of the reunion was pretty funny there at the end.
As for Vlad himself, he was quite a bit better here than in MI, but it couldn’t match up to his stellar performances in BR and RS. I really like how he sets up one plan to get what he wants, and uses another plan to get others to unknowingly do his work to assist in his original plan. That’s what he did here. Original plan: steal Jack’s portal. Other plan: place the bounty on Danny to perhaps destroy him, and/or diminish Danny’s respect for Jack. His short little fight with Danny was done very well; I enjoyed Vlad’s cockiness, especially the “one hand behind my back” comment. Oh, and I find it funny that Vlad says things like, “Butter biscuits!”
I liked seeing the father/son bonding in this episode. As of this episode, we’ve now had three family bonding episodes. Brother/sister in MBK, mother/son and father/daughter in MI, and now father/son in TMDG. Husband/wife would come in SW. All we’re missing is mother/daughter, but that’s for another day. As for her, the fact is that just about everyone gets embarrassed by his or her parents. Not me, though. :) As a matter of fact, Danny’s whole family interacted in a very good way. I thought Maddie’s and Danny’s “Three…two…one…” was very funny, and Jack’s goof-ups with the hunters were good for a laugh, along with Danny’s “He’s right behind me, isn’t he?” comment. But why did Jack and Jazz just abandon Danny at school when he was about to get in trouble for something he didn’t do?
I really enjoyed Jack’s interaction with Danny Phantom. He didn’t seem to trust Phantom, but still was willing to cooperate. And I thought Danny’s calling Jack by his name was really funny; it was also funny when Jazz said it near the end.
I didn’t like the ghost hunters that much in this episode. I had a few chuckles here and there, but they seemed more fit for FOP, IMO. The Guys in White were OTT and the Groovy Gang was too much like Scooby-Doo. The only ones I really liked were the Extreme Ghostbreakers. Also, why would they blame Jack when Danny phased through the ground? Jack started yelling after that.
Sam and Tucker were just…there. Well, they still played a nice role. I liked when Sam sounded really worried for Danny, and Tucker was his usual self, worth a good laugh. But I wish they would’ve actually seen Vlad. I would like to see how they could interact. I liked that they were willing to help Danny out by keeping the hunters busy. But why is it that the last we saw of them here, they were sliding out of control down a very big hill?
I liked that we got to learn more about the Fenton Portal and how it really works. Sure, with something that complex, it’s bound to be dangerous at times, and the consequences can be bad if you don’t handle it carefully.
The final fight between Jack and Vlad left me happy that Jack won, but disappointed with how it went down in general. Jack is armed with only the Jack-o’-Nine Tails and the Ghost Gloves, while Vlad is a very powerful ghost at full power, and Vlad is taken down without a problem, landing only one hit on Jack. Also, why did Danny decide to just do his chores in a situation like that?
Vlad’s getting the key at the very end seemed a little too…thrown in. The key wasn’t mentioned after the opener at all until the very end, and that bugged me a bit. But I guess as a set up for RS, this works. But I have one question: how did Vlad get out of that behemoth?
That’s all I can really talk about for TMDG. The action was plenty good, and I give this episode 8.6/10.
