This episode was a torrent of many things…and few of them were good.

"Mediocre"
The plotline was nothing special, in that it was nothing out of the ordinary, and I find that’s one of the biggest things about the DP universe that’s really starting to bug me. Everyone knows how a show or movie will end, right? Through whatever turmoil or trials, the good guys win, which can get really boring, unless the guys and girls in charge find ways to add drama and unpredictable circumstances to the story, and make it so rollercoaster-y that you don’t even notice the ‘good always triumphs’ result.
As I’m sure you can tell by my literal tone, I’m saying that DP often fails to do this, many times, in fact, but not all the time. ‘The Ultimate Enemy’, ‘Reign Storm’, ‘Bitter Reunions’, ‘Kindred Spirits’: What do they all have in common? Drama. You’re on the edge of your seat to see the turn-out! (TUE in particular. Hands down the best eppy ever!)
But Season Three hasn’t had too much of that, if any, for reasons that are beyond me.
Let’s review, shall we? V-Man busts the weather-controlling specter, Vortex, out of the Observants’ prison, to make the blowhard (weather pun…if Danny gets to do it, so do I) cause a drought throughout Amity, and then have himself swoop in and save the day with his multi-billion dollar genius. Of course, it goes awry, and Danny has to clean up the mess, but ends up getting electrocuted and having his emotions tied to Amity’s weather, much to Vortex’s unawares.
I have to admit that Vlad was much more standable in this episode, more so than EfaE and IR, where his arrogance couldn’t have been any more staggering to his character, and his plot. If anything it was Danny that bugged me. We know Danny isn’t perfect, any realistic character can’t be, but here he was just plain bratty! And although I loved his using the weather to drive Vlad nuts, it didn’t make up for a lot of his whiny demeanor. You’d think after a year of being a ghost-fighting superhero that he’d learn to suck some things up.
But to be fair, I feel this was more the writers fault, not Danny’s, on account of my never seeing him act this way before…unless of course the heat has a reeeeally negative effect on him.
Sam and Tucker were pretty well done in this episode, as were Maddie and Jack. Sam was her usual observant and witty self, even managing to match the odd wit with Vlad, which made me smile, as even the self-absorbed celebrity had to admit her intelligence. Tucker was actually funny this episode, which beats the pudding out of his semi-regularly annoying self, and he invented something that ended up saving the day! Think a wired version of his beret, and then add a game of beach volleyball. Predictable, but still funny.
Jack was once again cheering for his Number One Mayor, not only owning, but wearing a giant Vlad head over his own to support his ‘pal’, much to Maddie’s chagrin. Am I the only one who loves it when she hates Vlad? It just brings out this side of her that I absolutely adore…
Of course, besides Vortex, there were no other meaningful characters in this episode. The Casper High students appeared here and there through the streets; the odd Amity adults popped up when required but besides one line from a virtual Paulina and Dash (courtesy of Tucker Foley’s wired beret thingy), no additional spotlight was cast.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Paulina and Dash; they’re kinda the foils to Danny and Sam. But I’d like to learn more about some of the other Amity residents. What about all the girls that were named in ‘Beauty Marked’, or the odd nerds, like Mikey and Nathan. And what about the background characters that HAVE been extended upon? Star or Kwan? Are we ever going to learn their last names? (Is Kwan his first name or last name, I’m not sure.)
If you got through the last two paragraphs without falling asleep, my point is that I’d like to know more about the characters other than those at the front. Box Ghost has a themed episode, why not some of these guys?
So overall, not the worst episode, (I reserve that title for ‘Million Dollar Ghost’ and ‘Infinite Realms’), but I’d prefer to watch something with a little more substance. Honestly, the novelty of ghost powers set the stage, but let’s have some real character and storyline here! It’d be great if this series could end on a good note.
