And, even worse, aired out of order! Ever since the night this debuted, I've been watching every re-run of every other episode telecast by Nickelodeon. But, not one of them featured a Yeti-like ghost with powers similar to Mr. Freeze. So, I checked back here. And, sure enough; the episode that should have preceded this one is still in TV limbo. As a result, I enjoyed this episode less-than-half as much as I usually do any other. That, in turn, makes me wonder if the entire show is on hiatus! For the less-videoholic, "hiatus" is a showbiz euphemism favored by TV networks with regard to series they're indecisive about renewing. Yes! The unaired episodes have plot summaries. But, so did the unaired episodes of the CBS series "Threshold." And, no one got to see those prior to its cancellation! People, like myself, had to buy the entire DVD collection for that. In short, Mr. Hartman, there's only way you're going to prove my theory wrong. Telecast those unaired episodes, ASAP. And, please do so in the proper order.
  • Another day, another ghost battle, and another excuse to not even have a real storyline…

Now I’m going to be relatively brief here; I don’t like to rant on when I don’t like an episode, so I’ll just state the overbearing bad and the odd good and then get out of your hair.

Were you wondering what I meant by my summary above? Looking over the episode I noticed just how little substance there was to this plot. Undergrowth’s one-time appearance was basically just a grande-sized ghost battle with a random quirk thrown in here and there. Once the novelty of a megalomaniacal plant ghost wore off, it actually got pretty boring. There was no real tension over the outcome, which even some of the simplest cartoons can accomplish. All it took was a few words from Frostbite and it became clear that Undergrowth was helpless. Speaking of the furry friend, I guess I’m one of the few people who got to see ‘Infinite Realms’ before this, and thus, got some additional background on his character, but it didn’t help to change my opinion of him. Once I got over his cool ice-covered skeleton arm, his personality, however cheery and optimistic, became rather boring. He was almost like a happier version of Clockwork, and although I love the idea of Danny having his own band of ghostly allies, I like to have a little more variety in their mental make-up. Okay, now I don’t usually pick on the show itself in a review; I try to aim more for each individual episode, but has anyone else gotten annoyed by Danny’s incessant monologuing? I bring it up because it seems to have increased over the past season, and really, it’s not necessary. What’s wrong with a little mystery as to what Danny’s thinking? It kinda deepens his character for us. I would say that this would’ve been better as a two-parter, but then unless the writers had added a substantial amount of plot , there wouldn’t have been anything else to write about.

And now the good: Number One: Undergrowth. I have to admit that he did look sweet, and the regenerating gimmick was very well executed; it seemed very fluid and indeed plant-like. Also, it’s not an unknown fact that I love Mark Hamill! He provided a creepy yet intelligent voice for the villain vegetable, and there were a few parts where he sounded an awful like a certain homicidal clown from a certain Batman cartoon… (see ‘Batman: The Animated Series’, if you have no idea what I’m talking about.)

Number Two: Sam. The ‘Poison Ivy’ look and later, the evil witch look were pulled off very well by her and I can’t deny that I didn’t love the soulless quality of her voice in those moments. Grey DeLisle does sometimes annoy me with her mass crowd of background voices, but when she hits a solid character, she hits it hard!

And Number Three: The two touching DS moments. “I always thought you ruled, Sam, just…not like this.”

It was great how he almost got through to her there in front of the Portal (it IS where the whole series began), and it showed how much she really means to him. Though anyone who’s seen ‘Frightmare’ or the commercial for ‘Phantom Planet’ knows that ‘meaning’ is in reality a whole lot stronger than he’s let on…

    “I’m just glad you’re okay…”

And yet another romantic moment interrupted by Tucker; if he wasn’t such a loyal friend I would feed him to a vat of badgers…just because that sounds like a fun thing to do. Overall, I’m sure there could’ve been much better ways to introduce Danny’s new power, in way that might’ve, you know, possibly had a story to it. Wow, this was longer-winded than I thought!
  • though this episode is creepy, and i kind of liked it...

AHHH,Undergrowth, the most powerful ghost Danny's ever faced, brainwashes Sam to be a crazy plant queen!!!! i hated the episode because of that, but i loved it because lots of action and Danny got a new power, ice! i know this episode confused lots of people because this was when we thought it was over and it airede before Infinite Realms, so everyone was like " Who the crap is Frostbite, and how does Danny know him? " This is the first time we see Danny's chest, and i know fan girls didn't need to see his drawers but they did get to see a superhero almost naked! um ... ok, that was weird ...
  • Everything was crammed together!

    8.3
    "Great"
I love the whole idea of the episode. But the thing is, everything was crammed together! That should've been an hour long episode. And I figured that it would be a huge deal in the later episodes, but there are only a few times that he uses his ice powers later.

Another thing that TICKED me off was the the US had not aired any of the episodes of the 3rd season. So I had NO CLUE what was really going on. At the begining it mentions Vlad as mayor, I was like "WTF! When did that happen!" and it also mentions that Danny met Frostbite sometime before, and again, I had no clue what they were talking about!

Dont get me wrong. I liked the episode! But I just wish that the US had been smart enough to air the previous episodes! So I give this episode an 8.3
  • An evil plant-like ghost has turned the city into his own personal garden, and worse, he's turned Sam into his daughter. Now, Danny must master his new icy powers if he wants to save his friend and the world from a life of vegetation.

This has to be the best episode of Danny Phantom they made yet. Danny gets a new power (the funny part is him training to use control it, he froze and skewered the ghosts who trained him, it was obvious they would scream when he asked if he could stay. They even screamed when he waved good-bye ). We also see more hints of romance between Danny and Sam. Danny was pretty worried when Undergrowth took control of her. Danny's new ice power is cool (literally). My three favorite abilties Danny has are his Cryokinesis (or Ghostly Ice), his Ectoplasmic Energy Blast (or Ghost Ray), and his Ghostly Wail.
  • I thought this was gonna be a HUGE eppi! Not a dinky retarded one! Sorry, I still like DP.

    8.3
    "Great"
This eppi.... well, I was expecting more from this. I mean, they make a big friggen deal about this and it was only half and hour long, Not a lot happened. To be honest with you I think this is the eppi that caused Danny Phantom to be um..... paused for a while. Not a lot really happened. Sam was controlled by a ghost (seen it), Danny saw Frostbite (seen it), Danny and Sam have another DxS moment (do I have to say it?). I mean this eppi had a lot of repeaters. The only things they didn't repeat were the new powers, the new villain, Undergrowth, and having the whole eppi based on plants! Its sort of taken from a movie I saw..... what was it called though? Oh whatever! The point is I liked the general idea of this, but why did they need to make such a big deal of this? Yay Danny got his ghost powers! Now what? He almost freezes and is seen in a tank with his undies on? Kinda silly, right? Oh well. I just want the new eppis of season 3 to come out really soon. I have seen all the eppis, but not with sound. I'm really mad right now, you can probably tell.

Escaping from Undergrowth in the Ghost Zone, Danny turns to his cold-loving friend, Frostbite, who explains that Danny is developing a new power. I've been around the web and there seems to be a lot of fans who are displeased with this episode....i am howewver completely in love with it! Beisdes that dorky sweater Danny wears...I'm okay with everything else. Sam looks like and evill tinker bell with vines...and might i say that those ice powers look very hot! i mean cold...whatever. AMAZING EPPIE! I thought the plot was really good, i think it could have been made into a movie and it would be the same.
  • They had a great plot, but it was nearly ruined when they tried to squish it into twenty minutes.

    5.5
    "Mediocre"
First off, Nick ruined more than one part in the episode by airing it out of order. Since when did Vlad become mayor, and when does Frostbite come in? Nick couldn't have picked a worse time to air this episode. I won't continue mentioning how I was disappointed at several parts that made the continuity mess-up obvious, however, because that would be Nick's fault.

As for the part of the episode that Butch and his team *could* control... well, it definitely wasn't my favorite episode. It was WAY too rushed for a mere twenty minute episode; it was as if I had watched a movie on fast foward with some parts edited out. One minute Sam is in a greenhouse, and the next Undergrowth comes along and enslaves everybody. Where did Undergrowth come from, anyway? It felt like he popped up out of nowhere to unleash his terror randomly. They needed a lot more time to bring everything into the story.

Also, I have to say that I really didn't like the jokes Danny was using during the final battle with Undergrowth. None of them were funny, in my opinion, and at a certain point I was wishing Danny would just stop.

After watching this episode, I'm trying to find something I liked about it so my review here won't be so negative, and I can say that I liked the general idea for the story; I just didn't like how it was laid out in the episode. To add one more good thing, I also liked Sam when she was being controlled. Her voice really fit the part, and... well, okay, so I'm a bit of a sucker for plots involving mind-control. The only thing that was getting me semi-hyped up for this episode was the second commercial, which showed evil Sam.

Well... that would be the end, I guess. I'm just really hoping that the rest of the third season doesn't sink to this level.
  • Danny must learn a new power to destroy a plant ghost who wants to take over Earth.

    "Great"
This episode was okay, but it was a little confusing since it was aired out of order. I love Danny's new power. I like how his eyes glow blue when he is getting ready to use it. I also like Frostbite. He was really interesting, even though I have no idea how he and Danny know each other. My favorite scene in this episode was the part where Frostbite is trying to teach Danny how to use his new power. That part was sooooo funny! I also liked the D/S moment at the end of the episode. I liked the look on their faces when Danny gave Sam the ice crystal.
  • Urban Jungle was great, just out of order!

    9.6
    "Superb"
Many people think that this episode was really bad, but I totally loved it! The only problem is that they aired this one out of order! I mean, how did Vlad become mayor? And what about Frostbite? They were revealed in later episodes, but I think Nick was just too excited about showing Danny's new powers! This episode sent chills up my spine and it got me really excited about new DP episodes! His ice power was really cool and there weren't a whole lot of his puns throughout the show! Urban Jungle was absolutely terrific and a great storyline, but I think that they should've aired the episodes in order.
  • Love the storyline and the whole episode. Especally Danny\'s ice powers.

    8.0
    "Great"
Danny starts out really cold, even wears a coat and realizes that Undergrowth is taking over his town and must stop him. I really love his ice powers. I even like the part where he\'s in his undies lol. That is so hillarious. I still wonder how he met Frostbit, guess I won\'t find out till the episode comes out. I also like the part where Danny accidently shoots the Yetties with his ice powers and Frostbit says, \"guess we won\'t be selling any snakes today.\" lol lol lol. I\'ll give this a B. It\'s great, but not the best. It\'s one of those, you know. It\'s great, but not as good. Oh well, who can say? No one\'s perfect right? It\'s still a great episode, who doesn\'t agree?
  • It was good, but I felt that the writers could have done a better job.

    6.1

When Sam is in her Green House taking care of the plants, Tucker and Danny come by to pick her up to do something. Tucker and Sam see that Danny is freezing cold, even in the Green House. Tucker finds in interest in Demilo, a Venus Fly Trap. He makes a joke about it saying that a plat that hates veggies as much as he does. When they leave, they see that their town is getting modernise. While Tucker is in love with the idea, Sam hates it! Thats when the Plant ghost, Undergrowth. Undergrowth turns everyone but Sam into plant zombies, Sam gets turned into their Queen. Danny tries to stop Undergrowth, but because he is getting so cold he ends up escaping in the ghost zone. Then we get to see his alies who help him with his new powers, at first he has troubles with him, but then he nails them! Undergrowth has Danny in his cloches, but Danny remembers how to use his new powers. His new powers defeats Undergrowth, and everyone in out of his control! Sam sees his new powers, and Tucker has the idea of mowing lawns for a high fee. Then when they see Undergrowth, Tucker runs him over.

This episode had its good moments, but I wouldn't consider it one of my favorites.
  • Great episode, but too rushed!

    9.0
    "Superb"
I thought that this was a really great episode, but it was way too rushed! I had heard this was to be an hour long movie, and was disappointed. But never the less, it was awesome! There was so much action in it which was entertaining. And the thing about "Mayor Vlad" made me more excited about the episodes that came before it. (why was it shown out of order?) Plus, Danny had new powers (which were cool) and gained a new ally. Or, at least we were introduced to his new ally, Frostbite. Plus, Sam sounded awesome when she was controlled. It was a great episode, finally a new one!
  • The plant ghost Undergrowth is angered by all the building in Amity Park, and he tries to take over the world with plants. It is up to Danny and his new power to save the day!

This is another episode that got my hopes up. I thought "YAY! New Danny Phantom! This should be good." But I was wrong. It kind of, well, sucked. It was rushed and boring, and I thought that people made too much of a big deal out of it. Yes, this show is one of my favorites, But this episode is not. They got Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, Star Wars) to play Undergrowth, which would be cool if the episode was good. I know I sound harsh, but I was really disappointed and hope that in the other episodes the show can redeem itself.

  • Danny has to defeat Undergrowth, in a 22 minute, Avatar reference filled episode.

    3.4
    "Bad"
I have to say, this just turned out to be the typical, overhyped episode. It got annoying, but don't we all love Avatar references!

There was one weird thing I noticed that even the trivia and allusions doesn't have. As any Avatar fan knows, Mark Hamill does Fire Lord Ozai and also does Undergrowth, and Grey Delisle does Azula and Sam. Sam called Undergrowth "Father", a nice and funny reference to Avatar.

Back to the review. I also hate promotional names. "Phantom Phreeze" doesn't fit it. So if Nick calls it that, I will punch the TV!

So I hate the episode, that isn't too bad, right?! I just happen to hate hype, face it.
  • It was exciting and an awsome episode but a few points off.

    9.0
    "Superb"
This episode by far is one of the best but not exactly the best.

The storyline was good especialy with Danny learning a new power but the episode was kinda rushed.A few of the parts didn't make sense. It would be a better episode if it was a TV movie.

What also ticked me off was that Nick just decided to go willy-nilly on the episode and put it out of order. It's confusing to watch this as the 3rd season premire.

The 2 main problems with that is:

1):There was a billboard about Mayor Vlad is one thing that makes it confusing with people thinking,"Mayor Vlad? When did he become mayor?I must of missed an episode."

And 2):Frostbite(which was supposed to be introduced in an another episode that came before Urban Jungle(Thank you very much Nick!*that was sarcasm.Learn it!*))said that Danny was his friend and that Danny said he knew him too.Again with the people thinking,"Danny and Frostbite know each other?I must of missed an episode."

See the pattern Nick? You can confuse people with putting episodes out of order.

I give this a 9.0 for the animation and plot. The other poing was taken away with Nick putting the episode out of order and for the rushed episode.

Overall,it was a good episode. It was real funny, had a lot of action and had real good animation. But the rushed plot and episode out of order just ticked me off.

Next time, make sure that if it's a good plot don't rush so that people can understand what's going on.

And a message for Nick:Stop.Putting.Episodes.Out.Of.Order!That usually ticks people off especially the older audience like teens and adults that watches for those small details and mistakes.
  • One big action sequence with a dash of character development.

    7.5
    "Good"
Really why did Nickolodeon tote this episode as a special? Granted I love Danny Phantom but this one wasn't all that noteworthy outside of the usual DP episode.

A new threat arise in the form of a plant spirit named Undergrowth which quickly starts taking over the people of Emity Park and enslaving them to do his bidding with Sam the most affected as she is the new "mother" of the plants due to her apprication of nature. Danny manages to escape thanks to his newfound ice power that been recently developing in his body but is freezing him inside out. Least until a new ghost friend named Frostbite shows him how to control and use it to his advantage to defeat Undergrowth.

While I dug the foreshadowing at the start of the episode concerning Sam and the plants as well as Danny and his ice power. Everything else pretty much went past in the blink of a eye, really the setup was virtuallty nonexistant. Were in the battle the first few seconds of the episode which also was pretty by the numbers. Hero tries to take on villan, doesn't have the means, runs away, get new skill or power and come back to kick the baddies butt. Meh still the dialouge was spot on and the training sequence was funny (Every though Frostbite was introduced a bit early then his premiere episode in the States) and the final struggle, while obvious how it'll end, was a good watch. Plus we get to see SOME advancement on the Danny/Sam relationship

Overall good but not great episode which really didn't warrent as a "special" but still worth a watch to any DP fan.
  • Sure it was fine. But it would have been better if the real first five episodes of the season aired.

    6.0
    "Fair"
It was okay but like I said this was the sixth episode of the third season but they aired it as the season premiere. Sure it was a good episode but there are still questions like who is frostbite and is Danny and Sam finally BF and GF. Mark Hammil did a good job as Undergrowth. And some parts were just plain dumb like when Jack says that weird word than thanks Maddie for spelling it for him and taping it to the Assault Vehicle. It would probably be better if you had the real episodes before it.

    Peace out
  • I think the episode was a good one

    9.8
    "Superb"
I think the episode was good because if you really think about it, if this was just a normal episode without any hype building up to it, it was pretty darn good. My dad liked this episode even though he has only seen about 2 danny phantom episode, he said he thought it was good. The danny/sam moment at the end was sweet and I definately think it brought them closer together. The only thing that was sort of a problem were the puns. There were a lot of stupid puns. Other than that i thought it was well done and just as a presonal note: DS rules!
  • Not at all the best for DP standards, but it wasn't that bad either.

    8.3
    "Great"
This episode was obviously a rushed one. That was made apparent to me pretty quickly. And there were parts of it that didn't make sense since the episode was run out of order, but that's Nickelodeon's fault, not the episodes. But I digress, so....

Other than that, the episode was satisfactory. I personally didn't like the overall plot or the villain, but the way everything was played out was very good. In other words, the episode was decent even though the idea of it didn't appeal to me.

It is by no means the best episode, but it certainly isn't the worst, either. =]
  • An OK episode, but it was a very strange episode to me for some reason.

Danny is having trouble with controlling a new ghost power. But that's pretty much the least of his worries. Undergrowth, ghost master of all things plantlike, has taken over amity park and turned its citizens into plantlike zombies. Except for Sam, which he makes his queen. Danny must find a way to master this strange new power to defeat Undergrowth, so he goes to the ghost Zone to seek the help of a Yeti-like ghost named Frostbite. Frostbite explains how to use Danny's new power to defeat Undergrowth, so after much training, Danny masters his new freezing power. After thanking Frostbite for his help, Danny returns to Amity Park to defeat Undergrowth. He freezes Undergrowth's roots, thus defeating him, saving Sam, Tucker and the citizens of Amity Park.
  • I love it so much I still watch it over and over again. You know what I wish I was Sam in Urban Jungle.

Danny Phantom Urban Jungle Was the best episode of all time better than all the shows and all the movies I has alot of things from plants to undergrowth to animity park to plant animity park to goth sam to plant sam to regular people to members of the mine vine favorite lines like Join us danny the growth is family, Become danny become part of the growth, Stay danny stay and rule with me,and you must take root become one with us. I know some of the lines. Even better than all the mlb games combined. I give it 1,000,000,000,000 thumbs up.
  • Not the best episode, but the plot was really good!

    "Good"
I really loved the idea of the episode, and it\'s really cool that Danny had the ice power all along! What I didn\'t like was that it was really rushed. My brother and I both expected it to be an hour long movie like most of the newer Avatar : the Last Airbender episodes. *sigh* I really, REALLY hope that the whole season won\'t be like this. I really do.

Anyway, I do have some good stuff about this episode. Sam\'s voice was AWESOME! Her outfit was too! Well, really, I loved everything about Sam. It brought back the fact that she\'s a veggitarian, and I liked how she named all of her plants. That was too funny. And the end of the show, where Tucker runs over the mini-Undergrowth with his new lawn-mower. That was good.

Overall, this episode was pretty interesting. I really liked it, besides the fact that it was rushed.
  • By Painful to watch, I mean BAD!

    2.4
    "Terrible"
They overhyped this one TOO MUCH. Kinda like Secret Of The Fire Nation, but more disapointment in this one. I hate overhyping people! It gets on my nerves SO MUCH!

So my rating for this episode, 2.4! How bad for Butch Hartman. Let's hope he come's out with better episode next time...
  • You can tell that it was rushed.

    9.5
    "Superb"
It did include some awsome scenes, but after only like thirty seconds the villan weas introdunced! It usually took about ten minutes into the episode that the villan was revealed. Don't get me wrong, but it was an awsome episode, but it was rushed. Other episodes had better scenes, and better action. I also thought that it was great that Sam finally got to become a villan for an episode, and was very great how she fitted in with the story! It was wonderful that they had her be a plant ghost, cause we all know how Sam loves plants!
  • first I want to say I DID like this one, because after you read on you may get confused...

    8.8
    "Great"
I don\'t like knowing, with out explaination. Like when since is Vlad mayor? And where did Danny and Frostbite meet? Some great dialoge in this one. Sam\'s lines are FUNNY! I just wish the episodes had been played in order. I think the episode felt rushed and more time was spent in the land of the far frozen then in his own home town. I liked the little moment between Danny and Sam, but even though I wanted to beleive it...I didn\'t really feel it. Seemed very out of Character for Danny. Maybe there is another thing we have missed, and will soon be able to understand what exactly was going on.
  • The over-all episode was great, but it was too rushed for my taste.

    8.9
    "Great"
Within the first 30 seconds of the episode, the villian was already introduced. Danny getting his freeze abilitly was definitly a highlight of Urban Jungle. Also, evil plant sam was definitly amazing!! I just personally thought they crammed way to much stuff in a twenty three minute period! The danny/sam moment was way too quick, and was ruined by Tucker much too soon. (typical... lol.) But I have to admit it was really really cute, a little head touch. I just had wished for a bit more. So overall, the episode was fun to watch, but not the best season-opener! Also, I didnt like the fact that nick aired it out of order, according to Butch Hartman.
