Anyone who's had to sit through a teacher's ill advised attempts at therapy will empathise with Daria here. In fact, when I run a Confidence, Assertiveness and Self Esteem course with teenagers I always start with clips form this episode to re-assure them we know where they're coming from (and have a sense of humour!). this episode sets up major themes of the series. An overbearing and misguided teaching staff, clueless parents, popularity -or lack thereof -, social issolation and sarcasm. If sarcasm can count as a theme. Lawndale High is rapidly and vividly set up and, with a little stretching, it could be any high school anywhere. Not that Daria is an everyman character. Far from it, at time she can come across as arogant and obnoxious, but it's far later in the series when she becomes unlikable. Great first episode.
  • Daria was one of my favorite shows as a teenager.

In the first aired episode of Daria, Daria and her sister Quinn move to a new town, Lawndale, and begin going to a new high school.

Daria's sister Quinn is pretty and popular and is able to make friends instantly, while Daria is a little less softer on the eyes, and isn't really friendly by any means, mostly because everyone surrounding her is a moron.

Daria is forced to take an after school self esteem class where she meets her friend Jane.

Daria convinces her family that her self esteem will begin to grow if they could only do things as a family like they did when she was younger. However Daria is just making all of this up, in order to get pay back for being forced into the stupid self esteem class in the first place.

Great pilot, really funny. I was a big fan of this show in my teen years, I wish they would replay these goodies.
  • Daria's sarcasm and the small adventures make this episode "Exactly why I watch the series"

What More can I say? Daria has been one of the best shows on MTV back then. When there wasn't pointless date shows (Exposed & Next), Scripted shows about people in the O.C. (Laguna Beach & The Hills), and partially some Real World series that was pointless to watch (Real World Paris), Daria, Undressed, and a few other shows were the ones I watch. I really liked this episode. The Duo of Daria and Jane sets off, and Quinn's sudden popularity seems to crumble. I really wanna know, why can't I find any Daria DVD's out? did they just stop making them, becuase i'm tired of downloading them on limewire, and I just started!
  • Welcome to the wonderfully sarcastic world of Daria...

On their first day at Lawndale High, Daria and Quinn have to take a mandatory psychological exam, where perky, popular Quinn passes with flying colors, while sarcastic loner Daria is forced to enroll in a self-esteem course, where she meets the equally sarcastic Jane. Meanwhile, Quinn goes to great lengths to prevent people from knowing she's related to Daria, since she thinks that it will ruin her popularity.

this is the episode that truly made a mark in history..it was the defining moment in daria history that would make or break the show. Needless to say, it definately kicked butt and set a new standard in the way televisions shows were made.

i highly recommend this episode to anyone wanting to find the best of daria. because simply put, it's what really started a show that lasted for 5 seasons and pioneered a new way to do television for all shows, animated or not.

  • Daria and Quinn Morgendorffer, welcome to your new school.

The first episode of undoubtedly one of the best animations of all time, and we open with Quinn and Daria getting a lift to their new school. When they get there they're told to take the mandatory psychological exam. Quinn, the popular, bubbly sister of the two passes with ease, while Daria, the anti social and sarcastic sister fails, perhaps on purpose.

This episode is all about establishing the two Morgendorffer sisters, so not a lot plot-wise, actually happens. As a result of failing the exam Daria's sent to take a self-esteem course with the soft hearted and feeble Mr. O'Neill. In the class we get to meet who will be Daria's best friend and accomplice for the next five seasons, Jane Lane. Elsewhere, Kevin the dumb jock, Britney the cheerleader socialite, and Mr DeMartino are all introduced. Martino is one of the highlights, quickly establishing himself as the "teacher who hates his class", and one of the few LOL moments of the episode.

The episode ends with Daria passing the self esteem test through Jane knowing all the answers, and insisting that her family spend more time together, despite it being merely to annoy them.

The opening episode of a fantastic show, Daria can only get better...
  • Pilot episode for all intents and purposes

I liked this episode. It was a good start to what seems to be a good series, one of the better animated series so far. There's a character that everyone can relate to. We've all had a flaky teacher like Mr. O'Neill or a hostle, bitter teacher like Mr. DeMartino. Mr. O'Neill is so flaky that he can't even remember Jane's despite her taking it 6 times already. All of the other characters are introduced well and the plot was good and full of witty, sarcastic humor. I hope the rest of the episodes are as good or top this episode.

This episode was a great start to what I hope is a great series. Her perspective on high school is pretty much the same as mine and her character (and other characters) are easily related to. Each one of the main characters are introduced (Helen, Jake, Daria, Quinn, Jane, the popular students, teachers, etc.), the plot line was great, and the dialogue was sarcastic yet witty. Overall a great show.

Lastnight (07.10.05), The N (Or Noggin) restarted the series. This is my chance to review every episode (which is what I\'ll try to do). Now, to my review. This episode was genious. It was a GREAT kickoff for the Daria series. It was a great first episode in general because the script was great. When Daria and Jane meet, you can see the bond between them and you just KNOW that they will be the best of friends. I was personally impressed that the characters have behaved the same way throughout the WHOLE series and was equally surprised that the script writers kept all of the characters well...in character. My hat goes off to the producers and staff of this show.
