Daria accompanies Jake to a businessmen's convention, while Quinn invites the Fashion Club for a sleepover party. At the convention, Daria and Jake have trouble finding much common ground, and Jake tries to suck up to an egotistical restaurant tycoon who wants to take him ballooning--something that, given Jake's fear of heights, could prove very dangerous. At the sleepover party, the girls give Helen a makeover while she asks them advice about dealing with Jake. During the course of the night, Quinn and Sandi can barely hide the intense dislike they feel towards each other.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      ADD TRIVIA
      • Arno the ballonist seems to be a less-muscular parody of Arnold Schwarzeneggar.

      • Daria'a comment to Quinn about throwing her friends in a lake is a reference to an old witch-hunting practice. Suspected witches were tied up and thrown in lakes or ponds, the theory being that a real witch will use her magic to save herself. Those that bobbed to the surface were witches. Those that drowned, weren't.

    • QUOTES (8)

      ADD QUOTES
      • Barlow: Say, Darlene, would alligator wrestling get you into a restaurant? Jake: Of course it would! Daria: That depends. Is there a restaurant next door with cock fights?

      • Daria: (to Jane) Do you mind if I come over Saturday night? Otherwise, I'm afraid I'll end up doing time for de-accessorizing a teenage girl with my bare hands.

      • Helen: I mean, this trip is a chance to really get to know your daughter as a person. Her hopes, her dreams, her fears. Jake: Ah, Helen, do I have to? Helen: Jake! Jake: But I'm scared.

      • Quinn: You're leaving me here alone with Daria all weekend? Daria: Relax. I'll use the popular thumb screws.

      • Quinn: But how I am supposed to choose just one friend? Daria: Throw them in the lake and see who pops to the surface first.

      • Helen: No dating while we're out of town. Quinn: Muh-om! Helen: The boys of Lawndale will just have to suffer.

      • Jake: Here we've spent a whole day together and I haven't even tried to find out, um, your dreams...and fears. Daria: My biggest fear right now is that I'll wake up, and this conversation won't have been a dream.

      • Jane: You know no one says you have to stay home. It's a big wide world out there. Daria: It's the width I find so disturbing.

    • ALLUSIONS (3)

      ADD ALLUSIONS
      • Montessori "Montessori" is a system of education developed by Maria Montessori, and is actually quite effective. It was advocated by Ayn Rand, and seems exactly the sort of thing Andrew would like.

      • Title Pun: Of Human Bonding The title is a parody of the book Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. It's about a sensitive boy who is orphaned, and raised by his aunt and uncle. He yearns for adventure, eventually leaving home, but later returns to London where he begins a doomed love affair that changes his life.

      • George of the Jungle "Watch out for that tree!" is a line from the theme song to the old cartoon, George of the Jungle. George is a Tarzan parody who has a tendancy to swing on vines right into trees.
