Episode Summary

EDIT
As graduation looms over the horizon, Helen encourages Daria to apply for a scholarship. Due to her lack of extracurricular activities, the only scholarship Daria has a good chance at is one sponsored by the Wizard Corporation, which only requires that its applicants enter an essay contest. Daria's essay makes her a finalist, but she finds herself competing for the scholarship with Jodie and Upchuck, both of whom appear to have a greater chance at winning. Additionally, Daria finds that the corporation has extremely racist and sexist business practices, and as the interviews approach, she questions whether she really wants to pander to their level in order to win. Meanwhile, academic underachiever Jane starts to feel left out. This season has had a running joke involving Jake's failed attempts at cooking. Here, he receives a huge bulk order of hot dogs by mistake and tries to make the best of it.moreless

    • QUOTES (10)

      • Jodie: (about Jane) She sounded just like you.
Daria: Does that mean I sound like you?
        Brittany: (passing by them) Hi!
Daria: If either of us starts to sound like her, it's time to panic.

      • Daria: Squander my million-dollar smile on a ten-thousand-dollar prize? That's crazy talk.

      • Mr. Landon: Ring the big bell, Daria! Ring the big bell!
        Daria: "Big bell?"
Jodie: Okay, so my dad thinks he's Quasimodo...

      • Mr. Brower: Ms. Morgendorffer, you seem to have a bit of an attitude problem. Are you trying to sabotage yourself?
Daria: I'm responding to your questions truthfully, so I guess the answer is "yes".

      • Helen: Daria, did I hear you reading your scholarship essay?
Daria: Judging by how calm you are, I'd say no, you didn't.

      • (the doorbell rings)
Jake: That must be the prime rib!
Daria: I just assumed it would be dead, and here it is ringing the doorbell...

      • Jane: (to Daria) The whole point of these scholarships is to show how marvelously well-adjusted you are. You're coming off all observant and honest. You know: antisocial.

      • Upchuck: You know, we are in the competition together...
Daria: Actually, we're in it separately.

      • Quinn: What? If the Fashion Club finds out I'm eating bulk rate...
        Daria: Or eating at all.

      • (To Jane, while searching for a scholarship to apply to)
Daria: Hey, here's one for you: have you ever had anything shown in a museum? Regional's ok.
Jane: Yeah, like I'm gonna fill out a five pound application and kiss the butts of some review board just to get a few thousand bucks to get to a school that I'll probably hate anyway...(notices Daria's scowl) Um... Not that you shouldn't do it.

      • Title Pun: Prize Fighters

"Prize Fighters" was a term used for boxers in the early 1900s when immigrants would earn money by winning fights in bars which gave birth to the sport of boxing as we know it today.
