During the flashback scene, Jake is holding the book in one particular way. During the close-up of Helen, the edge of the book shows that it has changed positions without Jake doing anything.
(speaking of Tom) Jane: My ex, your current. This is slightly uncomfortable, but how can I resist?
Daria: Hmm...lot of flowers. And chocolates. Did you come down with a debilitating illness and forget to share the good news? Quinn: Daria, it's not like I ask guys to buy me presents. I merely suggest.
Tom: Hey...if you're not going to leave a flaming bag of dog crap on the doorstep, at least come in. Daria: Well, can't resist an invitation like that.
(Quinn is trying to hint to Tom about his forgotten anniversary with Daria) Quinn: Sometimes things just slip my mind, like names or what day it is. Tom: It's Tuesday.
(Jake is multi-tasking at work) Jake: Jake Morgendorffer, that is one beautiful pie chart. Oh damn, the zombies are coming over the hill! Bam, bam, bam! Exploding frog cartoon? Gotta see that! Good lord, the Nikkei is dropping! Quick, move out of Yen! Something's happening on the panda cam? I am wearing a polo shirt and khakis, why do you ask?
Jane: (on her new sculpture) I'm going to call it "Exploding Kiln #1". Or what do you think of "Pottery Blam"?
Jake: Snotty digerati...hey, that rhymes!
Daria: So, I admit I've been kind of sensitive lately. And, um, a little... Tom: Distant? Cranky? Childish? Daria: Yes. Thank you so much for all the adjectives.
Jake: (reading the paper) Hey, when did the help-wanted section start coming pre-circled? Am I paying extra for this?
Daria: Well, um, I was wondering if I could ask you something... Helen: (excitedly) Yes! Daria: Well, Tom and I have been going out for about six months and... Helen: Oh! Um, Daria, sometimes we may think that we are ready for something and that it won't change anything, but we're really not and it changes everything, and in the rush to grow up we sometimes forget how precious are the fleeting years before adulthood's cares and... Daria: It's not about sex. Helen: Thank God! Er...I mean... Oh. I see.
