Their old hippie friends, the Yaegers, who haven't changed a bit, visit Helen and Jake. An issue is raised over which family is living the better life now: the laid-back, old-fashioned Yaegers, or the modern, upwardly mobile Morgendorffers. Quinn takes an interest in the Yeagers' aloof, cynical son Ethan, who ends up telling her about their parents' former problems with the law. Daria, meanwhile, heads off to a flea market with Jane, Jesse and her continuing crush, Trent, where they attempt to sell Trent's old records.moreless

    • TRIVIA (6)

      ADD TRIVIA
      • When Daria is staring at Trent as he sleeps, Trent's eyes can be seen opening just as Jane finishes teasing Daria about her crush. Many people think this is a goof, but according to writer Anne B. Bernstein, this was purposeful to show that Trent has caught on to Daria's crush on him.

      • Helen landed on her butt in the compost pile, but that side of her shorts is completely clean when she and Willow walk past the car.

      • Jake tells Helen he's growing a beard "again," but in all of the flashbacks we never once see Jake with any facial hair.

      • This show is riddled with references to the late sixties, early seventies. Here are some of the more prominent references: Frank Zappa, legendary Musician Velvet Underground, a band Steal This Book, a book Get Smart, a television show Boston, self-titled album from band of same name.

      • Eyefull, Bachelor Confidential: These are both magazines which Chuck and Mr. DeMartino search for. They are both fictious magazines, and are probably contain adult content.

      • Trent's wall has a fancy poster for the band, Korn. Korn's music has been used in previous episodes.

    • QUOTES (22)

      ADD QUOTES
      • Ethan: Come on, I'll buy you a slush cup. Quinn: It's about time! Ethan: Got any money?

      • Jane: You could always swap yogurt recipes with the Yaegers. Daria: And what's wrong with my yogurt recipe?

      • Daria: There's nothing like watching the sun rise, except maybe watching the sun set in reverse.

      • Willow: You have a very old soul. Daria: It's just mature for its age.

      • Quinn: This has got to be worth at least twenty bucks. (to Ethan) Now tell me again about how mom punched out the cop.

      • (shouting is heard from the kitchen) Jake: Wow, sounds like the girls are getting liberated. Coyote: Cool.

      • Jake: Wow, this is strong stuff! Willow: It's got natural pectins. Jake: I love pectins!

      • (Daria is watching Trent sleep) Daria: I think he stopped breathing. Jane: Nah, he's entering a dormant stage. In about ten years he'll emerge as a butterfly. (pause) I guess you're going to wait.

      • Quinn: Is this a retro thing, or are they serious?

      • Helen: I'll put Coyote and Willow in your room. Daria: You're going to them in my room? You better tether them to the bed so they don't float away.

      • Ethan: Breakfast? I thought it was lunch time. I'm going back to bed.

      • Jesse: We'll load the van. Jane: Van? Jesse: You know, the Tank. Jane: Oh, goody.

      • Trent: Zappa digital...Zappa analog. Jesse: Sounds the same to me. Trent: You call yourself a musician? Jesse: No, I call myself an interpreter of sound.

      • (an old VW bug pulls up) Quinn: What kind of car is that? Daria: It's not a car, it's a time-machine.

      • Trent: Hold-over hippies? Daria: Yeah, they're big believers in the concept of voluntary simplicity. Trent: I gotta use that. Sounds much better than "broke".

      • Helen: They're here! I hope they don't think I've changed too much. Daria: Just be yourself. That's what you've always told me. Helen: I could kick myself for that.

      • (on the Yaegers) Daria: Their sunny sixties optimism tends to cancel out my bitter nineties cynicism.

      • (Jesse and Trent try to wake up Jane and Daria) Jane: Come back at six. Jesse: It is six. Jane: Then how come you're so damn chipper?! Trent: We thought it would be smarter to stay up all night than try to wake up early.

      • Trent: Yeah, I guess if you insist on holding on to something from the '60s peace and love beats a "Get Smart" lunchbox.

      • Trent: It's the warmth of vinyl, man. I'm telling you, it's a richer tone. Jane: You're tuned to the radio. Trent: I wondered why Zappa was selling fishsticks...

      • Quinn: Daria, You can't leave me here with those...those YUPPIES! Daria: Yuppies are from the '80s. Quinn: Then what do you call people with funny outfits who talk about peace and love and stuff? Daria: Trekkies?

      • (Flashback) Jake: Come on, everyone. If we focus our positive energy, we can make the Pentagon rise up off the ground (Waits, then yells) RISE, damn it! (Rushes to the side of the Pentagon and kicks it) Ow! (Flashback ends) Stupid five-sided building!

    • NOTES (2)

      ADD NOTES

    • ALLUSIONS (4)

      ADD ALLUSIONS
      • The Pentagon In Jake's flashback, he and the hippies trying to levitate the Pentagon by using their positive energy is a reference to an urban legend about why the United States chose to have the building that houses the Department of Defense in the shape of a pentagon. Supposedly, the Pentagon's odd shape is because it is being used to confine the demon Yog Soggoth. This caused all sorts of strange attempts by various groups to do things to the building, most famously during the Vietnam War the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, gathered for a demonstration at the Defense Department (the "March on the Pentagon"), where they were confronted by some 2,500 armed soldiers. Leader, Abbie Hoffman, satirically declared the group's intention of levitating the Pentagon 300 feet by means of meditation, wobbling it once in mid-air in order to exorcise evil spirits.

      • Annette Funicello Mr. DeMartino is an Annette Funicello fan. She's best known for being one of the original Mouseketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club and 1960's teen beach movies, but she did sing a number of Top 40 hits.

      • Episode Title: That Was Then, This is dumb This episode is a take on the novel, That Was Then, This is Now by S.E Hinton; even the storyline is similar to the book.

      • Quinn: People with funny outfits who talk about peace and love and stuff. This is a reference to both to hippies and, as Daria points out, the more obsessive faction of "Trekkies" (fans of the 1966 TV series Star Trek and its many spin-offs).
