  • The Lawndale High kids go on a paintball field trip to learn about war tactics, group strategy and other things that are more taxing than sleeping through class. Parodying such classic war films as "The Deer Hunter", "Platoon", and "Apocalypse Now", everymoreless

    This episode is another great episode that is lost on many audiences because of the plot being so heavily based on film parodies--especially films that the target audience for the show have probably never seen. Even though the jokes are funny in their own right, one really cannot fully appreciate them if they didn't have any knowledge of Vietnam War films like "The Deer Hunter", "Platoon", and "Apocalypse Now". In fact, the last scene from the episode is a shot-for-shot homage to "Platoon" with the score and everything that is completely lost on anyone who hadn't seen the film. While this episode is a great character-development episode (the Ms. Barch/Mr. O'Neil love affair starts in this episode) and is very well-written, it requires a knowledge of Vietnam War films that most of the "Daria" target audience may have heard about, but probably never actually seen.moreless

    • Jane: Come on! Let's ditch paintballing and go visit the great white shark. It'll be cool. Daria: No it won't, it'll be stupid. And we're already doing something stupid. Jane: But this stupid thing will be our idea.

    • Helen: Quinn? Quinn: (wearing braids) Do you think this hair style means something? Because it doesn't. Helen: But you never... Quinn: Can't I experiment with a new look if I want to? Helen: Of course, but I... Quinn: All right, all right! The whole school's going on a paintballing field trip. Daria: Put away the red hot poker. Quinn: The Fashion Club put me in charge of figuring out a style to prevent helmet hair I didn't know they were going to do it--I can't take all this pressure... Daria: Don't beat yourself up. You held out a good ten seconds.

    • Jane: I stopped to wipe out a village of farmers. This refers to the My Lai massacres during the Vietnam War.

    • Full Metal Jacket Stanley Kubrick's war film Full Metal Jacket is referenced a lot in this episode: when Sandi is aiming at Quinn through the blasted-out hole in the side of the building, and Mr. O'Neill's uniform having a peace sign and a happy-face button is taken from the film where one soldier wears a peace sign and paints "Born To Kill" on his helmet. Mr. O'Neill is a pacifist and would want nothing to do with killing and violence, hence the happy-face instead of the "Born To Kill".

    • Platoon Platoon was based on Oliver Stone's personal experiences serving in the Vietnam War. The scene at the end when Sandi is kneeling in the mud with her arms in the air is taken from the Oliver Stone movie Platoon, as is the song playing in the background, Barber's "Adagio For Strings". Also, Daria's quote, "Hell is the impossibility of sanity. That's what this place feels like: hell. And it's only been an hour. Some damn hour, grandma." is a direct quote from Charlie Sheen's character in the movie.

    • Title Pun: The Deer Hunter 1978 movie about the Vietnam War, starring Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken.

    • Kevin: Umm. League of Nations? League of Nations was a part of wilson's peace plan for the Treaty of Versailles after WWI
