This episode is another great episode that is lost on many audiences because of the plot being so heavily based on film parodies--especially films that the target audience for the show have probably never seen. Even though the jokes are funny in their own right, one really cannot fully appreciate them if they didn't have any knowledge of Vietnam War films like "The Deer Hunter", "Platoon", and "Apocalypse Now". In fact, the last scene from the episode is a shot-for-shot homage to "Platoon" with the score and everything that is completely lost on anyone who hadn't seen the film. While this episode is a great character-development episode (the Ms. Barch/Mr. O'Neil love affair starts in this episode) and is very well-written, it requires a knowledge of Vietnam War films that most of the "Daria" target audience may have heard about, but probably never actually seen.
