Ms. Li asks (read: orders) everyone to volunteer during Volunteer Week. Daria, Brittany and Kevin volunteer to read for senior citizens, but the seniors only like the perky Brittany and Kevin and are put off by Daria's unenthusiastic voice. The Fashion Club, meanwhile, volunteer to donate clothes for the homeless, but accomplishes nothing by being too picky about what to donate.moreless

      • Daria: They may be shallow, but that doesn't mean they should be executed. Jane: Yes, it does. Daria: Very well, I'm sold.

      • Jane: There'll be no popsicle stick picture frames in Jane Lane's arts and crafts class. Tomorrow we're making voodoo dolls of the hospital staff.

      • Ms Li: With all this great land has given us shouldn't we think about giving back just a little? Daria: She's right. I'm gonna renounce my citizenship.

      • Mr. DeMartino: (Notices the principal has entered the class) Ah, Ms Li, I wonder if I mi... Ms Li: Forget it! I already told you no staff resignations while class is in session! (Mr. DeMartino grumbles under his breath)

      • Jane: Damn it! I must have left my Exact-O knives in the pediatric ward. Daria: You're really getting into this, aren't you? Jane: Yeah. The kids and I are redoing all the wall murals. The happy clowns holding balloons? We turned them into Mongol invaders wielding maces.

      • Brittany: Face it, Daria. You'll never be like me. Daria: Guess I'll have to find a new dream.

      • Daria: I didn't know Brittany had an older sister. Ashley-Amber: She does? Cool. Maybe we can get manicures together. Brittany: Daria, this is my stepmom, Ashley-Amber. Do you recognize her? Daria: I think so, but it's so hard to remember your childhood nightmares clearly. Brittany: She was the poster model for St. Peter Girl beer. Ashley-Amber: (from memory) "I'll cure what 'ales' you." (giggles) Brittany: Ooh, isn't she great? Daria: It's hard to believe she's real.

      • Mrs. Patterson: What a pretty girl... Daria: (upbeat) Oh! Mrs. Patterson: ...that Brittany is. Daria: (dejected) Oh.

      • Woman #1: What a pretty voice she has. Do you think? Woman #2: Oh, yes. She sounds just like Frances did when she was younger. Woman #3: I always did have a lovely voice. Brittany: Thanks! Woman #2: And I looked just like you, dearie. Brittany: Eep!

      • Daria: Do you think if you breathe on me I might catch your enthusiasm? Jane: Hey, who knows what you'll catch.

      • Daria: I just think people should volunteer for causes because they believe in them, not because it makes the school look good. Jane: Absolutely. Run down the list of causes you volunteered for again? Daria: I protested that book burning last year. Jane: You yelled at the TV screen.

      • Kevin: Darwin's the monkey guy, right? I like monkeys. Mr. DeMartino: A statement, no doubt, once also made by your mother! Kevin: No. She's more into kitties. Brittany: I love kitties! Mr. DeMartino: That's terrific, Brittany, and really adds an extra dimension to today's lesson!

      • The opening credits were slightly shorter. Parts of some of the scenes were cut, though none of the music was omitted. Apparently, this is not a unique occurrence, as many later episodes would also have their opening credits altered in a similar fashion.

      • This episode marks the first-ever appearance of Steve Taylor, and the first speaking appearance of Ashley-Amber, who was previously seen in "Pierce Me" (#212). Brian was previously seen in "The Lab Brat" (#107). Both parents were introduced in The Daria Database. Steve, Ashley-Amber, and Brian would be seen again in "Groped by an Angel" (#411).

      • The book Daria is reading to Mrs. Patterson is Howl by Allen Ginsberg.

      • The book Daria is reading in the kitchen is The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.

      • The "Brooke" that Quinn refers to could be the same Brooke (the one who suffered a nasal relapse after plastic surgery) from "Too Cute" (#109).

      • Theresa, the Cashman's saleslady, is apparently the same "Theresa in Junior 5" mentioned in "Monster" (#206). She will appear in several future episodes.

      • Daria's "Melody Powers" story is apparently part of a series of such stories, the first of which was heard in "Cafe Disaffecto" (#104).

      • Mrs. Johansen's comment about selling chocolate bars is a reference to Daria and Jane's unsuccessful attempt at fundraising in "Cafe Disaffecto" (#104).

    • ALLUSIONS (5)

      ADD ALLUSIONS
      • WhirlGirl Jane calling Quinn the "Princess of Pleather" is a reference to WhirlGirl, a short-lived Showtime animated series from the mid-90s about "a hyperactive chick with a funky fashion sense and a penchant for pummeling."

      • Gerald Ford Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, is an avid golfer, which explains his being mentioned in the same sentence with Pebble Beach, Florida.

      • Charles Darwin Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist and author of the book Origin of Species, whose theory of organic evolution would profoundly alter the natural sciences (and provide controversy for years to come, pitting "evolutionists" against "creationists," or those who believe in the creation of the universe as laid out in the Bible).

      • St. Paulie Beer Ashley-Amber's former job as the St. Peter Beer Girl is a reference to the St. Paulie Beer Girl seen in all of St. Paulie Beer's advertising. The picture is of a blonde girl wearing a low-cut German top carrying four steins of beer in her hands.

      • Title Pun: The Old and the Beautiful The episode title "The Old And The Beautiful" is inspired by the CBS Daytime Soap Opera The Bold And The Beautiful.
