  • Jonathan Winters

    Gunny Davis

    9.5
The son and grandson of midwestern bankers, Jonathan Winters spent most of his childhood with his divorced mother, a Springfield, Ohio radio personality. At an early age, he developed a facility for imitating movie sound effects, which matured into a talent for mimicry and improvisation. After serving with the Marines during World War II, Winters attended the Dayton Art Institute for two years. Although he hoped to pursue a career as a cartoonist, Jonathan held down a variety of unusual jobs (including a stint in an incubator factory) before trying his luck in show business. After winning a talent contest, he landed a disc jockey position at Dayton radio station WING, and from 1950 to 1953 Winters hosted several local programs for Columbus' WBNS-TV. Refused a salary increase, he moved from Ohio to New York City with slightly less than $57 in his pocket. Jonathan's appearance on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts led to a number of guest-star assignments on network television and a featured spot in the 1954 Broadway revue Almanac. In 1955, he became the first comedian to appear on the prestigious CBS cultural series Omnibus, and the following year he starred in his own weekly TV variety show. Winters also pursued a successful nightclub career, and recorded several Grammy Award-nominated comedy albums-- winning a 1995 Grammy for his album Crank Calls. Jonathan's psychological problems and his growing dependency on alcohol resulted in a well-publicized stay at a sanatorium in the early 1960s; he emerged clean and sober and continued to build a successful film, television, and nightclub career throughout the decade. Blessed with what actor Rod Steiger characterized as "one of the most gifted improvisatory minds in existence," Winters' form of comedy does not rely upon conventional jokes, but instead comments on the foibles of everyday life in a skewed, exaggerated manner. He is perhaps most famous for his gallery of richly comic characters, including feisty old lady Maudie Frickert, childlike Chester Honeyhugger, and bucolic Elwood P. Suggins. At his best when improvising, Jonathan was one of the few entertainers to star in a totally adlibbed weekly television series, The Wacky World of Jonathan Winters (1972). In addition to his own television programs and specials, Winters played dramatic roles in such anthology series as The Shirley Temple Storybook Theater and The Twilight Zone. In 1981 he costarred with Robin Williams (a lifelong fan) in the TV situation comedy Mork and Mindy; ten years later, he won an Emmy Award for his supporting role in another sitcom, Davis Rules. Jonathan's motion picture credits include It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Loved One (1965), Viva Max! (1969), and The Flintstones (1994). A collection of his short stories, Winters' Tales, made the best-seller lists in 1987; the following year he published a book of his paintings, Hang-Ups. For many years, Jonathan served as honorary chairman of the National Congress of American Indians, and in 1999 he was presented with the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for his contributions to American humour.moreless
  • Debra Mooney

    Mrs. Rush

    8.4
As a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, Mooney played Blanche Dubois in the classic play A Streetcar Named Desire. The play's author, Tennessee Williams, made a surprise visit to Minneapolis to attend the performance and decided that not only should Mooney move to New York, saying, "Honey, we need you there," but that she was his favorite Blanche. In writing about her in The New York Times, Williams said, "I have recently seen Blanche played with great wit and pathos by a young actress named Debra Mooney at the University of Minnesota. She made me howl with laughter at my own work." Her additional Broadway performances include The Price with Eli Wallach, the female version of The Odd Couple with Sally Struthers and Brenda Vacarro, and Talley's Folley with Judd Hirsch. She also appeared opposite Dustin Hoffman as Linda Loman in the critically acclaimed Death of a Salesman. Most recently, Mooney played Mary Phillips in Michael Chepiga's Getting and Spending, a timely play about insider trading. In movies, Mooney was featured in Dead Poets Society, Domestic Disturbance, Napoleon, Chapter Two, and Tootsie, again working with Hoffman. Mooney fondly recalls a memorable scene with Hoffman when she caught him off-guard with her improvised line, "I can't act with this," which made it into the movie's final cut. Mooney's television credits include a regular role in Davis Rules starring Randy Quaid and Jonathan Winters, and recurring roles on Roseanne and The Practice. For the latter, she recently completed production on an episode for this season in which she reprises her recurring role as Judge Spindle alongside guest star Sharon Stone. She has guest-starred on the top-rated comedies Murphy Brown, Mad About You, Seinfeld, Just Shoot Me, Will & Grace, Everybody Loves Raymond and the season finale of Joan of Arcadia. Mooney resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Porter Van Zandt, a well-known stage producer/director, and daughter, Kirstin, who worked in the art department on many major feature films. Even Mooney's cats - Sagamore, who has appeared in commercials, and Lydia, who has a book written on her behalf called Lydia Mewses - are in "the business." While on the set in Utah, Mooney hopes to try snowshoeing and spend more time on the motorcycle her character rides around town in the series. She also enjoys playing the piano and cross-stitching.moreless
  • Randy Quaid

    Dwight Davis

    8.0
For more than 35 years, Randy Quaid has delighted filmmakers and fans alike with the range and mobility of his talent, with his adventurous quest to stretch the variety of his characterizations and even with the skill with which he has morphed his appearance. Like the other great-unchained character lead stars of his time, such performers as Gene Hackman, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson, Quaid has been, by turns, dangerous, romantic, tragic and whackily comedic.

Randy was born in Houston to William and Nita Quaid, an electrician and a real-estate agent. While in high school at The Bellaire Academy in Houston, he caught the acting bug. He attended the University of Houston, but dropped out after winning several key parts for director Peter Bogdonavich.

His career started off in award nomination fashion with the fragile, sweet characters he created with telling comedic and dramatic expertise in such films as Last Detail, The (1973) (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination), Last Picture Show, The (1971), Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, The (1974) and Midnight Express (1978). His ability to create the lovable oddball was perhaps never better expressed than in his work as one of the four lead stars of a film which quickly became the biggest money-making movie success of all time, Independence Day (1996). As the tormented crop duster who eventually saves the world, Quaid created one of Hollywood's most memorable portrayals of unlikely heroism.

At the same time, he has proven an actor of dominating and even intimidating strength, most memorably in his Emmy Award-nominated and Golden Globe winning television performance as Lyndon Baines Johnson in the heralded production of LBJ: The Early Years (1987) (TV)and his portrayal of Randy Weaver in Siege at Ruby Ridge, The (1996) (TV). His portrayal of Blanche DuBois' suitor in Streetcar Named Desire, A (1984) (TV), exhibited Quaid's way with a role of touching pathos.

Quaid attempted to return to series television with David E. Kelley's The Brotherhood of Poland, New Hampshire, (2003), the series was short-lived on CBS.

In 1989, Randy married model Evi Motalaner. It is his second marriage. He was previously married to Ella Jolly; they had 1 daughter--Amanda Marie. He is the older brother of actor, Dennis Quaid (by about 3.5 years).moreless

One of the most prolific character actors working today, Stephen Root has worked alongside many of the biggest names in Hollywood. Stephen was born November 17, 1951 in Sarasota, Florida, USA and went on to attend the University of Florida during the 1970s. He worked in theater after graduation, first with the National Shakespeare Company before moving up to off-Broadway theater and finally moving on to Broadway. His first acting role on screen came in George Romero's cult horror classic Monkey Shines (1988). After that, many more under-the-radar supporting roles came his way until he found some moderate fame in the acclaimed series NewsRadio (1995), where he played the owner of a radio station with Dave Foley as a host. The show also introduced him to comedian Andy Dick, one of many comedian-actors whom he would work with again later in the nineties and beyond. The show ran from 1995 to 1999 before it was cancelled. Besides the character of Jimmy James on NewsRadio, Root has played more eccentric characters in recent years. Root began voicing several characters in the hit animated TV series _King of the Hill (1997)_ , a show created and starring Mike Judge. Judge would later cast Root in another cult classic film, 199's "Office Space" (1999), where Root played the squirrelly and unforgettable Milton Waddams, a man who is pushed around at work and has a fetish for Swingline staplers. More recently, Root has worked with such directors as the Coen brothers and Kevin Smith as yet more oddball characters as well as making guest appearances on numerous TV shows.
