Dawson's Creek

Season 5 Episode 19

100 Light Years From Home

Aired Tuesday 9:00 PM Apr 17, 2002 on The WB

  • Trivia

    • Goof: It is supposed to be spring break and the group is supposed to be down in Florida. The weather in Florida during Spring Break is usually warm but everyone is wearing jeans and sweats shirts, probably because they filmed in North Carolina in the winter and not around spring break.

    • Pop band M2M guest star as themselves.

    • When Joey and Charlie are talking in the pup tent in the living room in the morning, Joey's hair changes from being in front of her shoulders to being tucked behind her ears way too fast to be realistic.

    • Goof: When Chris invites everyone to the MTV concert, he asks them to follow him as he can get them in free with his 'clout' as a movie star. But later during the first song, Joey and Charlie arrive walking up the stairs from the beach. They didn't have tickets and Chris wasn't with them.

    • Goof: When the band M2M is performing at the MTV concert, the girls start singing a song that requires a very tight harmony. But at one point we see the second girl with the guitar no singing at all, yet the song continues to have both their voices in the harmony.

    • At the end of the episode, when Dawson is talking to Pacey in a normally loud voice, Joey and Charlie are awake and close enough in the living room to hear Dawson and Pacey's conversation. However, later in the season Joey had no idea Dawson had driven down to Florida to see her.

    • At the time this episode was filmed Hilarie Burton & Brian McFayden were real MTV VJ's.

    • Marion Raven and Marit Larsen are both members of the Norway pop duo M2M.

    • Goof: When Jack is on the roof, you can see the safety cable that is attached to his back.

  • Quotes

    • Pacey: So this is spring break, it doesn't really look like the brochures.
Audrey: Hey. I provided the house, you people we supposed to bring on the fun. There are some pizzas.
Joey: We could rent some movies...
      Pacey: ...or play strip poker.
      Audrey, Joey and Jen: NO!
Pacey: Come on, its not like I haven't seen you all naked before. Ok, ok. We'll rent movies.

    • Joey: So, you're a stalker now?
Charlie: Ugh, stalker. I prefer to think of myself as doggedly persistent.
Joey: Well you got the dog part right.

    • Oliver: Listen, I don't know what's going through your head, man, but that story... the way you told it... well, it sounds like the sun rises and sets with this girl.

    • Chris: Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I followed you to Boston. Would we still be together?
Audrey: I don't know. We're different people now. I'm different.

    • Jack: I messed up, Dawson.
Dawson: Don't worry about it, man.
Jack: I just wish... wish you could ever rewind your life?
Dawson: (Chuckles) Pretty much all the time.
Jack: I mean, just... pick it up right after graduation and just do it all over again. What would you do different?
Dawson: I don't know. Why? What would you do?
Jack: I thought I was doing well, you know? Making new friends, trying different things, just... building this whole new life.
      Dawson: What's wrong with that?
Jack: It just got too hard, man. It... I didn't think it was gonna be this hard.
Dawson: You didn't think what would be this hard?
Jack: My life... college. I'm failing out of school, man.
      Dawson: Seriously?
Jack: Yeah. I... I gotta ace all my finals, all right? I haven't read half the stuff. It doesn't matter 'cause I'll never be able to do it.
Dawson: Why? Well... don't say that. Take it one step at a time. We'll help you out in any way we can.
Jack: Oh, yeah. That's a great line. Yeah, because we say it to each other all the time. "Dawson, your dad died, but you know what? You're gonna be ok. Hey, you're gonna get through it. We're gonna help you."
Dawson: Yeah. And you know what? You guys did. It made all the difference in the world.
Jack: Tobey's got a new boyfriend. I called him the other day just to say hi. He seems so happy. How am I supposed to fix my life if I don't even know where I went wrong? I just want to go back. I just want to start over. Why can't I start over? Why? I just want to start over.

    • Pacey: Dawson? Hey, thought that was you. How long you been here?
Dawson: I... ha,ha. I don't know. You don't seem that surprised to see me.
Pacey: Want some coffee? I brewed it fresh.
Dawson: No. Thank you. I already had some. Um, I just wanted to, um...
      Pacey: To find Joey.
      Dawson: Yeah.
Pacey: Look, Dawson, if you're here because you think that you and Joey are... whatever you're thinking, this is a bad idea.
Dawson: You know, Pace, I'm on... no sleep and about 26 hours' worth of driving.
Pacey: I'm serious. You gotta give that thing up. That thing that you guys do to each other, the heroes of bad timing. You've got to give that up. It's over.
      Dawson: No, it's not.
Pacey: Aw, come on, Dawson. How many times are you gonna do this to yourself? How many times are you gonna keep on coming back?
Dawson: Until there's nothing to come back for, I guess.
Pacey: Suppose I was to tell you there's nothing right now?
Dawson: (Sighs) Believe me, Pace, sometimes I wish that was the case. But it's not. I can feel it. I know you don't believe in any of this, and that's fine. You're the cynic. I'm the idealist. It's how we work, I guess. But when I feel something this strong pulling me... I have to act on it. It's... the only thing that I know how to do. So you gonna tell me where she is?

    • Audrey: That's Chris.
      Joey: Chris as in...
Audrey: The one. The one I think of every time "In Your Eyes" comes on the radio. My perfect high school boyfriend who every boy gets compared to and who no one's lived up to yet. Yep that's him, he's here... kill me now.

    • (Talking to Joey about Audrey)
Pacey: She said, he is my Dawson, which is my personal kryptonite.

    • Audrey: Pacey and I are on the cusp of figuring out our whole thing and if he knew that Chris was the love of my young life, it would just get all kinds of confusing.
Joey: But lying to him will make it all better?
Audrey: Hey, Mother Theresa, why don't you go take a smoke break and bring back my good friend Joey?

    • Joey: Sometimes I think it's better when we don't get to touch our dreams.

    • Audrey: God, what do I look like, the whore of Babylon? Don't answer that.

    • Jen: Is that Chris Hartford?
Pacey: Oh, my God! The movie star I ordered from my Teen Beat catalog finally got here. I was getting so worried.

    • Charlie: Look, I would be happy to stop calling. Just tell me where you are.
Joey: I'm in your dreams, Charlie Todd.
Charlie: See, now, wait a second. That sounded suspiciously like flirting to me.
Joey: Maybe... and this is what a dial tone sounds like. (Hangs up on him)

    • Joey: (Answering her phone) Hello?
      Charlie: Hello gorgeous.
Joey: So, I was beginning to worry. You haven't called for 3 hours.
Charlie: Oh, so you do like my calling.
Joey: What do you want, exactly?
Charlie: Nothing, really. Just your address.
Joey: No problem. I'm at 359 No-Way-in-Hell Avenue on the corner of Get-Over-It and Main.

    • Joey: Ok, so let me get this straight...
Dawson: Oh, no. Why do I feel a quasi-feminist rant coming on?
Joey: Shut up. So basically, spring break is hunting season, Florida is the forest, and girls are the target.

    • Jack: I said I was going out for the necessary provisions; that means beer and jello.

  • Notes

    • Chad Michael Murray (Charlie) shares a scene with Hilarie Burton, his co-star in the then upcoming show One Tree Hill. Burton plays a girl interested in Charlie before Joey tells her (a lie) that he used to be a member of Hansen.

    • Before they leave on their respective trips, Joey makes a comment to Dawson about getting it right "in another life when we are both cats".

This line was made famous by Penelope Cruz in the movie Vanilla Sky, starring her and Tom Cruise. Ironically, Katie Holmes is now married to Tom Cruise; and in the beginning of the Vanilla Sky movie when he is running through Times Square he passes by a large poster of Katie Holmes.

    • Music featured in the episode included:
      Invincible Me by Shawn Jones

    • This is the series's 100th episode.

  • Allusions

    • Pacey: Oh, my God! The movie star I ordered from my Teen Beat catalog finally got here. I was getting so worried.

Teen Beat is an American magazine that is geared towards teenaged readers. It is a "sister publication" of Vogue.

    • Pacey: She said, he is my Dawson, which is my personal kryptonite.

Kryptonite is a mineral from the Superman mythos, usually shown as having been created from the remains of Superman's native planet of Krypton, and generally having detrimental effects on Superman and other Kryptonians.

    • Audrey: Hey, Mother Theresa, why don't you go take a smoke break and bring back my good friend Joey?

Mother Theresa (1910-1997) was an Albanian Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India, in 1950.

    • The title of this episode, 100 Light Years From Home, refers to the classic Rolling Stones' song, 2000 Light Years From Home.
