Rube placing pebbles on Lucy's and Rosie's gravestones alludes to his faith. The origins of this Jewish custom are not known, possibly related to having each mourner pile a stone atop a deceased person to build a funeral cairn in ancient times. Today, it is only practiced when visiting the grave and is a sign of respect that someone has visited. The more pebbles on top, the more visitors the deceased had.
